Fl ' ' ' 'r MAA ---L A s- V. . ..: .r .rc .- . , - --A .,..- V. V-, CLASS HISTORY By Walter Weisbecker FRESHMAN YEAR The group of us that had assembled as Freshmen on the Hrst day of Central in 1946, the second year of the Atomic Age, were alternately happy for themselves and sorry for their former parish classmates who were not there. The grim war years had passed and we corresponded in every way to the classes of the first post' war period that lived in the roaring twenties. Were we to live the roaring Hfties? The eternity of four years separated us from that answer. The shock of the first day, week, month, wore off and finally we took shape under' the clear, speaking leadership of the student council president, class of '49, We watched the splendor of the Minstrel, the Sunny South Minstrel and Radio Show, a satire on radio mixed with the charm of the South, roll by with only a few from our own group participating. Perhaps, too, the cheering we gave was not the loudest, but it was growing. This, I believe, was characteristic of the class, which was growing in stature, character, and personality, although Bro. George Thomas, then Vice'Principal, had to keep some of the more unruly in their places. That first year we were untamed, We did not yet realize the importance of settling down and working. The turnout of Central freshmen that year for the foot' ball team was small, for it is rugged for the freshmen against bigger competition, but such players as Ray Wrabley, jack Buechel, and Bill Huber had even then developed a faculty for making the coaches look twice! Finally came the North game, and we went all out for the winning score. Remember the parade back to school with the torches? Who were the men with the torches? That's what the faculty wanted to know The senior play Three Men on a Horse showed us what the fourth year was like The Brothers said we would be respected as seniors and in our eyes they were the elite of the school Truly we hold the honors of the classes of Central for being present for the Centennial of the Christian Brothers and also for the first operetta ever produced at Central This came under the name of My Maryland with Jim McAleer and Marilyn McCabe singing such unforgettable songs as Your Land and My Land and Silver Moon which even now bring back memories of the resounding rafters After this presentation the stage crew went into a well deserved rest period This group working under Brother Francls of Assissi did beautuur jobs on the sets and multicolored backgrounds of the Minstrel Senior Play and operetta Basketball was more or less ignored that year although Mr Standish encour aged the most shy Perhaps the boys foresaw that in the distant future a new style of play would rocket Central to fame This developed out of the schools program of never ending advancemert in sports As the routine of school went on we came to know the Brothers better and recelved another education that could not come out of any book We joked with such ageless Brothers as Francis Patr1ck surely everyone remembers some of Casey at the Bat Brother Emery whose talks on religious life and sports are common knowledge Brother Matthew with his stories that inspired us Do you also remember the roar of laughter that followed Brother Lucians remark Hugo to the Board There were heartbreaks in the first year but we underwent experiences that were insurpassable It wasn t a vicarious thrill we were really living it 1 sv. an 9 I ' x 1 1 - u. ws - - - 7 . . . u. as ' . ss - ws - - - ' s - 9 . . . . . . . .,- ' .
