Symbols have been defined as signs with something added. This little something has been known to stir up people to piety, heroism, joy, and terror. The use of Christian symbols first began in the Roman Empire, since the early Christians could not, even in the catacombs, safely express themselves except in symbolic form. They had learned the elied heavily on symbols by which to teach His flock. He con- ti J l wg Nl Q stantly referred to the great symbolic institutions, ceremonies, per- ? S Q sons, and events of the Old Law, and incorporated symbolic sub- X Q S' stances and acts - water, bread, wine, anointing, pouring, eating, l' drinking - into the very imparting of divine grace. ' as Y F? Christians, however, do not have a priority over symbols. A l Countries too, use them. Our country's best known symbols are 9 the flag and our National Anthem - symbols of our great land. Q WK' And so our theme is symbols, through which so much can be 6 said and through which so much beauty and meaning can be ex- pressed. May those we have chosen speak most eloquently for us ' of those great truths, great gifts of God, great models set before us that have formed the foundation for our lives. ALCALA PARK SAN DIEGO 12, CALIFORNIA March 29, 1955 A cordial salute to the Graduates of Cathedral High: Your Annual, outstanding in format and liter- ary excellence, reflects scholarship and esprit de corps. The theme of Christian symbolism threading through its pages reveals much research that uplifts mind and heart. Indeed, your own lives revolve around beautiful symbols. Strive for the counterpart, idealism. Symbols stimulate thinking. The rational creature by virtue of his natural endowments symbolizes the love and goodness of God -- a visible emblem of something invisible. My dear children, love God and thus possess your souls in peace. Sincerely, 'I' 'E The Most Reverend Charles F. Buddy Bishop of San Diego Reverend William A. Early in the fall, those of us who have any athletic ability tried out for the varsity. Christmas came soon, and its wonderful spirit filled everyone. lnstead of exchanging gifts, we sent all our presents to the orphans in Tijuana. Our usual Christmas party we held on the feast of the Three Kings, Little Christmas! Cup-cake sales, tag days, movies, and record hops soon followed. All proceeds went toward our lunior Prom, the biggest event of the year. We made so many plans! Band, bid, ballroom, dress-it seemed that prom night would never come. Finally the hour arrived for us to pick our class rings. They are so beautiful, and we, most impatiently, awaited their arrival in February. At long last, we could proudly display them. Another very important event was the patron drive. lt was a fight to the finish. We didn't win, but we worked hard and ended with over a hundred percent. It must have been funny! The Sodality of Our Lady conducted three major pro- jects this year. The first was the campaign to Put Christ Back lnto Christmas. Besides making posters, sodalists en- listed the help of the entire school in the selling of religious Christmas cards. In order to counteract the commercial and irreverent observance of l-lalloWe'en, Sodalists sponsored a Saints Alive party preceding the feast of All Saints. The beauty and cleverness of the Would-be saints spoke Well of the enthusiasm which this project created. Most important of all, Sodalists endeavored to institute a real flare for Mary fashions.
