Trevor Browne ' Kola . Coronado - I South Alizambrai 1, - Carl Hayden Cross Country makes State meet four years in a row. Cross Country is a sport where you com- pete against other schools and people to see who can run a certain distance the quickest. The first meet is in September and lasts through the end of October. Coach Ray Cruz said our Cross Country team was real compe- tative this year considering a few of our good runners were out. We made state meet for the fourth year in a row. We surprised alot of schools this year by making third in the division, and the division we played in was a tougher division. The runners don't concentrate on winning but on improving and by that they win, Cruz said. The runners more or less motivate themselves and each other. The runners and Coach form a bond between them and they become close, like a family, said Cruz. I'm sad we didn't have a girls' team this year, said Cruz, but I'm really excited about next year, our top six runners will be back next year. g'We practice in the mountains, desert, parks, streets, wherever we can. We try to run in a different place so we donft get bored with running the same course each day. Peoria - Ctwppairai. Marching Band Ronald Howell is probably one of the most hard working teachers in this school. Hefs dedicated to his work, he runs the poms, flag line and band single-handedly. I think he should be at a school where the bands are a lot bigger. He should be with kids that are more dedicated to the band put more time into the band than the students do. He de- serves the best members in the state of Ari- zona. Howell would listen to anyone's prob- lem, said Michael Torrez, band student for three and a half years who played base drum because no one else wanted to play it. It's not hard physically, it keeps me busy, be- cause itis a job, I do this mainly for the stu- dents, said Howell. This is Howell's 24th year as a band director. Every school band has a drum major, and ours for this year is senior Jesse James. James was qualified because he helped di- rect the band last year. He enjoys being drum major because it's a different side of music. He helps discipline and teach members dur- ing practices, he leads the band during gamesfparades. t'It's frustrating when they iband membersl don't learn what their sup- posed tof, Every Wednesday night the band had practices from 6:00-8:30 P.M. during football season. This year for band day the Hayden band went to Tucson to be judged on performance. The band was awarded a C average, for a lot of time spent practicing. Trombonists march in perfect time as they perform the song Aliens at a football game during half-time. During a pep assembly the band entertains the audience by playing the Fight Song . Tony Dela Cruz plays beautiful music on his favorite instrument, the trumpet. lst Row, Denise Bailey, Sonya Sotello, Carol Bustamante, Laurie Vining, Darlene Elias, Laura Abril, Patricia Flores, Joanne Ablog, Delfina Berznza, Andrea Beagle. 2nd Row' Elisa Armenta, Theresa Delagado, Rosie Torres, Maria Quintero, Veronica Sanchez, Cathy Olson, Laura Hernandez, lmam Saunders. 3rd Row- Elsa Baca, Jeanette Aguilar, Renne Aceio, Melanie McGee, Lisa Hernandez, Tanya Duran, Tanya Tzrvelekis, Toni Martinez, Darlene Buckley, Elvy Acosta, Mr. Howell lBand Directorl 4th Row' Fausta Peterson, Josie Castro, David Rottmiller, Richard Long, Michelle Ling, George Chavez, Matt Bright, Jerry Chavez, Theresa Yiannou, Marisol Saenz. 5th Row- Holly Fohrenkam, Michelle Cantu, Christina Shoults, Sharon Reyes, Eloise, Dela Cruz, Renete Kotzyba, Michael Torrez, David Murguia, Jennifer Lanyon, Jennifer Ploium, Heidi Hough, Michelle Grant, Elizabeth Nelson. 6th Row- Cathy Beltran, Susan Privatt, Lisa Torres, Belincls Reid, Lakisha Gurdy.
