WHERE LIFE BEGINS .... CALVARY CA-LVARY From the wee land ot Scotland, that homeland so dear to many a lad and Iassie, comes a story ot a courageous and taithtul band ot Christians known as the Covenanters. During the sixteenth century, under the ministry ot John Knox and other precious men ot God, the Protestant Reformation spread into Scotland. Bibles, which had been excluded trom the country, were brought in and distributed everywhere. The joy ot a personal salvation in Christ stirred the hearts ot many a man and woman so that on August I7, I56O a group ot Christians signed a covenant to God pledging their lives to I-lim. This covenant was known as the Confession ot Faith and as the news ot it spread from town to town many more gladly joined the ranks ot these Covenanters. In I636 during the lives ot the next generation the covenant was re- newed, this time known as the National Covenant ot ScotIand . It is said that 60,000 people gathered in the churchyard ot the Greytriars on February 28 to sign the new covenant. Soon practically all ot Scotland added their names to this docu- ment. While the people pledged their allegiance to their king yet the predominant thought ot the covenant was tor religious treedom and a complete surrender ot their Iives to God . . . Therefore, it is with a prayer of deep consecration that the students ot Calvary College have chosen to name their Annual The Covenanter . Their prayer is that trom out its pages Christ may be revealed. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the Ending. Though the beginning ot His earthly existence oc- curred at I-Iis birth in the manger ot Bethlehem, yet we know that I-Ie was in the beginning with the Father, tor Colossians I:I6 records For by Him were all things created and Christ, I-Iimselt. said Before Abraham was, I am ........ . . . Beginnings! What a wonderful word! This is the theme ot the 1938 Covenanter .... FCDIQEWCDIQID .... .

CALVARY .... WHERE LIFE BEGINS CALVARY Sand, rolling landscape. l-lot wind, softly blowing, fans the cheek of the lone figure. l'le stands gazing into the western sky. Sun is sinking among the purple hills. Silence-such silence-A leaf floats lazily by, The silhouetted figure stands long, then face lifts toward the sky, now aglow with numberless sparkling diamonds. Ah! the wonder of it all. The magni- tude. The majesty. And beyond these glories-GOD. ln the beginning God. Of such words, the finite mind fails in complete comprehension. And God said. These few words in the very beginning of the Scriptures so capture the mind, so thrill the soul that the Spirit is ever busy unfolding the meaning. It is as the breaking dawn. One sees vaguely, but as ever increasing light appears, objects become clearer. So as the Light of God opens and enlarges the vision, the wise follower of Christ walks in that Light. It is indeed with humble and grateful hearts that the students of Calvary College dedicate this first issue of The Covenanter to the Word of God-our Bible. ln this day of shifting sands, false doctrines and un- belief, the Bible is our safe retreat. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away. These are the words of Jesus. Time cannot change them. Unbelief can have no effect. They stand secure -absolute. Therefore we not only dedicate this publication to the Word of God, but first give our own selves to God, the author of the Word. DEDICATICDN . . .
