SWORD ‘N’ SHIELD 1977 — Volume 7 Calhoun Academy Population — 350 St. Matthews, S.C. SPRING 89 in 8 9 C.A. Football Is Better Than Ever On August 27, 1976, the Cavalier football team drew first blood with a score of 30-16 over Thomas Hart. After two years of dismal seasons, the Cava- liers were really ready to play. Barry Chastain controlled the game with 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Having felt the thrill of victory, the Cavaliers established a six-game winning streak before losing to Wardlaw in a hard fought battle on muddy ground. The next week also brought disappointment as the team lost a heartbreaker to Mims. The Cavaliers, however, bounced back to de- feat arch rival Holly Hill before losing the last game of the season to Dorchester in sudden death. The Cavaliers earned their fine sea- son through teamwork, individual deter- mination, and their dedicated coaches-- Rufus Inabinet (head), Ronnie Spigner, and F reddie Stabler. These boys did a fine job not to have had any prior experience. They all came from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades except for lone freshmen, David Norris and Lance Ott. The leading rushers were Rusty Wannamaker, Lance Ott, and David Norris. Outstanding players on defense were Tim Carn, Jerry Chastain, and Buddy Hicklin. With the fine instruction of coaches Douglas Rucker, Ronnie Barnes, and Tommy Culclasure, the team looks promising for the next season. Special thanks also goes to the jayvee cheerleaders, who did a super job in cheering the team to victory. 1. We're young ... % We came when we were younger . In the first year of this decade. We thank God for all our friends And all the memories we've made. Though we're the oldest, we're still young. And now we find we're stepping out Into a world we've learned about. We're foolish . . . Never find us serious. We're the fools that play the game. When we lose, it comes in stride; We joke about it just the same. Eraser fights and pranks we've pulled, We've never hurt anyone In all the foolishness we've done. We're happy . . . Never see us with a frown. Always feeling glad at heart; Never letting another down. We've been happy from the start. Never cry--the laugh is ours; We can't be sad in a world like this. We're moving on to endless bliss. We're moving on . . . Disbanding now, and after years We're going our separate ways. We won't remember any tears; We'll just retain the happy days. And this will be the song we sing: We're a little bit of everything, But mostly We're young; We're foolish; But we're happy. John Hane 1 6 77 ________________ . 47 Powder Puff ... Go! Go! They sponsor both the door contest at Christmas time and the Miss Calhoun Academy contest in the spring. Wendy Culclasure, editor-in-chief, and Elizabeth Fairey, assistant editor, put the paper together with sports stor- ies, features, short stories, poems, and gossip contributed by themselves and reporter members of the staff. All Together Stiff necks, backaches, and bloodshot eyes -- symptoms of a rare disease? De- finitely not! These are the distinguishing characteristics of a student who has spent long hours toiling over layouts, headlines, captions, pictures, and more layouts. There is a never-ending cycle. As soon as one deadline is reached, work on an another is started. The only thing that keeps these students working at this furious pace is the realization of their goal --a super yearbook! Heading the staff were Claire Wanna - maker, editor; Mary Jo Wannamaker, business manager; T.K. Also seeing much action were Martin Banks, Keitt Wannamaker, and Jerry Chastain. Under the coaching of Mark Line, these boys became very efficient on both ends of the floor. These five players worked well as a unit. Having practiced long hours against the varsity, they knew their positions and their best shots. We would like to express our special thanks to Lawrence Henry Wienges, Sr., better known as Bunky , for going beyond the call of duty in the effort to better Calhoun Academy. His never-ending devotion and enthusiasm as president of the P.T.O. greatly aided in the success of many projects. Whenever a P.T.O. barbecue was planned, he would always be there to help cook all the delicious food that was served. Unlike most parents who lose interest in Calhoun Academy after their children graduate, Bunky Wienges has remained loyal even though his son graduated four years ago. His efforts will not be forgotten. sa • - TT M 1 i r 1. - ;-. tCSraKS Si'ria r •• n r
