At graduation time teachers, parents, and friends join in congratula- ting the Seniors who have won the coveted diploma. Everyone realizes that the graduate has worked toward a goal and has achieved that goal. Today when more pupils are graduating from high school than ever before we find ourselves thinking about graduation as the customary out- come of high school attendance. We are shocked, therefore, when a recent study shows that in our country only 502 of those enrolled in our high schools actually graduate. This only serves to emphasize that those who graduate have persisted, have achieved, have been successful. Seniors of l95N! We know you want to be successful in life for everyone has that desire. But how little we know about the real YOU. What thoughts are you thinking? what capabilities have you locked inside that are as yet undiscovered? what will you accomplish in the years that are allotted to you? One lesson I hope you have learned is that of interdependence. The automobile, airplane, and atomic bomb have brought all people so close together that a man or woman in Cadiz, Ohio, might start a chain reaction that would travel around the world. If the law of averages holds true to form some of you will attain a ripe old age while others will live a comparatively short span of years. Some will win riches, and others will earn only a modest income. Some will hold positions of prominence--others will be just average citizens. It is my conviction that each of us is placed in this world for some purpose. We each have some mission to perform. In the final examination God will determine whether or not your life has been successful in the light of how well you used the talents he gave you. we wish you real success. q9,!..fc' Congratulations to the Seniors of 1957+ and to Mrs. Birney. You have produced a fine Annual. It will be treasured by all of those who purchase one, for years to come. I believe that we have a good school at Cadiz. I think we are helping our students to become good citizens, believing firmly in the democratic way of life. Every school has standards. These standards at Cadiz High School, in my opinion, should be flexible to meet changing demands of the society in which they, the students live. School standards should be as high as they need to be or should be, to utilize to the full, a stu- dent's present level of ability and thus build toward higher future levels of ability. They must not be too high and inappropriate if they lead to continued failure until the point of frustration is approached. We must give more recognition, in the future, to the integrity of the individual. The child in the school, is only an apprentice citizen. we must instill in the ch1ld's mind the principles of the democratic type of government which we have. We at Cadiz High School, hope to create thinkers, who will in the words of Bacon NRead not to believe and take for granted, but to weigh and considern. 5 Mr. John S. Eleanor Brown and Don Cope started with us, spending all but one or two years at Cadiz, Our teacher for the first grade was Miss Pickering. In second grade Miss Rogers made her frolicking pupils toe the mark. We were Joined by Carol Barkhurst from Shortcreek and Roland Steer from Smithfield. Third grade already and our penmanship and coloring had improved greatly over last, year, at least we thought so. Our fourth year and we welcomed Junior White and George Sawko from McKees. Hilda Thompson Joined us after having left us in first grade. Fifth grade and we had a new class mate from Canton, Elizabeth Manbeck. As sixth graders, we were an unruly lot, but Miss Philpott and Mrs. Jennings did a wonderful Job in preparing us for Junior High. will we ever for t gpg f Gregg G plgs? Before we left sixth, we enjoyed presenting We were full-fledged seventh graders and were we proud! We had the great privilege of changing classes and going to the library. Best bib and tucker were donned for our first dance--the Seventh and Eighth Grade Dance. Eighth grade and our class was enlarged by James Madison, Gene Lucas, Malcolm Blanchard Rhoda and Keith Strother, and Margaretta Brooks from Dunbar, Elaine Thornton and Dick Meadows from New Athens, and Charles Arnold from Haverfields. Barbara Wagner our classmate of eight years, departed for Shadyside. , Our freshman year came at last. We filled H-ll to capacity with our large freshman over 100. Miss Gettig, Mr. Roush, and Mr. Roth had an enormous Job class, which numbered on their hands trying to keep us all quiet. Our class was almost doubled by students from local grade schools including: Donna Boone, Jean Garvin, Shirley Rogers, Ann and Melvin Terry Suzanne Blanchard, Carolyn Morrison, Darlene and Eugene Hendershott, Bill h D Sladoje June Drabic Estella Kalinich, Charles Jones, Leonard Cologie, Phyllis Sc as on Davidson, Jack Davis, Judy Harris, and Dan Sprowl. But we lost the following: Dianne Bennett, John Kirkpatrick, and wayne James. Don Richards left us to join the Navy. All t R Decker an athletic of us were deeply shocked at the sudden death of our classma e oy , boy who always wore a big, broad smile for everyone. And so our Sophomore year started on a sad note. As soon as our play was over, plans were laid for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Shirley Evans joined us from Adena but Fred White left for the Navy and Dick Ledfors for the Marines. we were very sorry to bid goodbye to Gwen Raver, when she left us to finish her 12th year at Ashland High. Death struck our class once more taking Bill Gavorcik from us. Annina Cresta left us also. 30 The year we have all awaited has arrived and so we are Seniors at last! We got our name cards and pictures. we had lots of fun giving our Senior Class Play, I Love Lucy , which we thank Miss McCutcheon for directing in such a fine manner. It doesn't seem pos- sible that this is our last year!! We published our annual. We thank Mrs. Birney for her hard work and patience, along with Mr. Campbell for his wise words of counsel. Thus we reach the climax of our high school days together. Some of us will go on to college or business school, and others will be working on various jobs. Sometime we hope to meet once more, but we will always have the memories of our days together. The time has come for the present Senior Class to depart from this way of life and enter into new fields. But before we go our separate ways, let us look back on our twelvg years and remember when we first met each other. C. from New York to design dresses for nMamien I boarded a train in Grand Central Station with my two top models, Marian Thompson and Shirley Evans. While riding we became hungry.and bought a delicious sardine sandwich from the waitress who proved to be Patty Fisher. I asked Patty who concocted this great deli- cacy and she said the famous dietician, June Drabic. I picked up a paper and on the front page was the latest movie starring the well- known dancing team of Constance Greer and William Schas. Incidently, their agent is Michael Evans. In the society column I read Uwho is the distinguished-looking New York gentlemen being seen with the New York model Donna Boone?W In the same column I read that Misses Judith Harris and Estella Kalinich are returning to the United States after a tour in Italy. In the sports column under nB1g Gamen, I noticed that Richard McBride and Karl 0'Bradovich with their famous dog, Mousie, had caught their fiftieth raccoon this winter. Who's new in the Globe Trotters? Keith Strother, James Madison, Malcolm Blanchard, and Gene Lucas have Joined that basketball team. While glancing through the rest of the paper, my eye caught a familiar looking name. The following arrest was made by Patrolman Eugene Hendershott: Don Emert of Cadiz, Speed- ing. He was arraigned before Mayor Jack Davia of New York and fined 810 and costs. A voice interrupted my reading ordering me to move my feet. Donald Cope was sweeping the aisles. Donald and I had a long chat. He told me that Dorothy Luther and Elizabeth Manbeck are head nurses in a New York hospital. Their latest patients are Charles Harris and George Sawko who are recovering from their most recent crackup. Fred Bice Robert Linard and Charles Arnold are now big executives in New York. Their receptionist is Betty Davis, and their private secretary is Janet Busby. Donald said he saw a lot of girls formerly of Cadiz on the train last week. They were Joan Coulson, Carolyn Morrison, Julia McConnell, Barbara Hare, and Jean Garvin. They are married now and were all taking their babies to a baby show in New York. Arriving in Washington I was met by Mamie's private secretary Eleanor Brown. After my appointment, Eleanor and I talked for quite a while. She said Carol Barkhurst and Phyllis Davidson are private secretaries here in washington and that Darlene Hendershott owns an exclusive dress shop on Pennsylvania Avenue. Eleanor said that I should go over to the House of Representatives and listen to Representative Donald Sladoje introduce his bill for aid to homeless pigeons. Good old Don! I decided to take a cab over to hear his speech. Kirkland Cab Service! How familiar that sounded and sure enough Robert Kirkland was at the wheel. My what a fine speech! News analysts covering the speech were Roland Steer and Daniel Sprowl. Remember them Janet? While walking down 83rd street, I bumped into a newsboy who turned out to be Melvin Terry. After exchanging greetings, I told him I was looking up the Class of '5N'. He told me that Ann Terry is now married and living with her husband, coach at Oxford, Ohio. Charles Jones is now chief bottle washer at the Hillcrest Dairy. Kay Harris, now the wife of a big-time rancher in Colorado, is busy rustling steers. This secret information came from an F. B. I., friend of mine, Junior White. 36 Remember Susan Campbell's great love for sports? Well, she is now coaching the Ohio State Football Team with Robert Richards, Jack Harden, and Edward Kollar playing on the team. Victor Long is their manager. I just got through reading George Kelley and Richard Meadows' book, HHgw Qggs Qgg Ggt Igtg Wegt Pgigt? Splendid! Norma Reed is now teaching the first graders in Cadiz. Bless their little hearts. Rhoda Strother, Margaretta Brooks, and Suzanne Blanchard are married and living in Cleveland. I learned recently that Neil Campbell has a strenuous job as manager of Richard Byers' dog pound here in Washington. Hilda Thompson has recently taken over the Groucho Marx Program. while I was here in Washington, I thought I would drop in on Elaine Thornton who works in the patent office and there I found our class genius, Charles Wallace, trying to get a patent on his new invention--bottomless buckets for carrying steam. Charles told me that Michael Bertz, head of the highway department, has just finished constructing the last cattle underpass beneath all highways. Wonder why? Maurice Myers now owns the largest manufacturing concern of Crosley cars. Joel Hanna has just finished his new racing car with wings, The Hanna Special, to eliminate wrecks. Congratulations, Janet, on being voted the most beautiful secretary of the year. And so this concludes the class of '5h'. They went from ten losses in 1952 to seven wins and two ties in 1953. A great deal of credit is due the boys and coaches. Hard work and determination helped bring about their successful season. They won the crowns of both the leagues they were in, the Eastern Ohio Athletic League and the Eastern Central Ohi Ath o letic League. This was an honor well worth working for. As quoted by many of the district coaches, nThe EOAL League was the toughest league in the Ohio Va11ey.H Much credit is due to the Seniors of this squad for there were seventeen of them on the team. The Seniors placed at least eight men on offense and eight to ten on defense at all times during the season. The 1953 season was the second undefeated one Cadiz has ever had in foot- ball. The other undefeated team was the 1951 squad with an eight win one tie record. 63 Qeaanainasniszs Malcolm Blanchard Tackle Don Emert Tackle George Sawko Tackle Fred Bice Tackle Dick Meadows Guard Ed Kollar Co-Captain Guard Jim Madison Guard Joel Bass Guard Jack Davia End Charles Harris End Leonard Cologie End Mike Bertz End Jack Harden Half George Kelley Half Charles Jones Half Joe Strother Co-Captain Half Bob Richards Quarter Managers Bob Kirkland Buster Long Gene Lucas Gary Frizzell 1213 Fgotball Schegulg Bridgeport 13 Cadiz 39 Jefferson Union 19 Cadiz 19 Carrolton O Cadiz 20 Barnesville 19 Cadiz 21 Uhrichsville lk Cadiz 25 Dillonvale 20 Cadiz 31 Dennison 7 Cadiz 57 Mt. Pleasant. The Cardinals picked up their first win of this outing. Later in the season the Mounties traveled to Cadiz only to be defeated again. The record for the Cardinals and Mounties since 1931 is nine wins for Cadiz, three for Mt. Pleasant. The team that proved the biggest headache for the Cardinals in the ECOL League was Uhrichsville. In their first class of the season only three points made the difference to give the Cardinals a win. In this record meeting the difference was seven points in favor of the Tigers. when the Panthers of Scio came to Cadiz they put their nine year winning streak over ghehCard1nals on the court. The Cardinals broke the Jinx by winning in a very close one 1' 90 When the Red Birds traveled to the home of the Red Devils of St. Clairsville, they were taking a record of 15 previous years of wins to six losses with them. In another hotly contested game the Cardinals came out on top to make their record for the season five wins to no losses. The battles with our arch rivals, the Golden Wave of Adena, produced two wins this season. The all time record for these two schools places Cadiz on top with 35 wins to 24 for Adena. The Cardinals had their first winning season over the Railroaders of Dennison since the l9k4-M5 clashes with Dennison. The Shamrocks of Barnesville took top honors at Cadiz as well as on their own courts this season. In the first clash the strong Class A school and Cadiz played a heart breaker on the Cardinal's home court. Final score Barnesville 53, Cadiz 52. Of their no meetings on the hard wood since 1931 Cadiz holds the record of 25 wins to 15 losses. The Cadiz fans that saw Cadiz and Wlntersville clash agree that Gene Lucas was the only boy that held their big nfull backu to a Uno yards gained game.n By the way, Cadiz won the game 67-58. After defeating Dennison for the second time, the Cardinals had two ECOL League teams to play to assure the Cardinals a tie, if not the championship. Newcomerstown was the first of the two teams that fell before the Red Birds. Next came the greatly improved Carrollton Warriors. In a very close battle the Cardinals presented the home town folks with another win. The Cadiz squad finished its season by traveling to Bridgeport. The speed of the Bridgeport team was just too much for the Cardinals who have been used to playing on a small ncracker boxn of a floor. The Cardinals share a Co-Championship of the ECOL League with the Uhrichsville Tigers. This is the first time in the history of the school that Cadiz has ever shared any part of this basketball honor. The five departing Seniors of the team: Lucas, Strother, Harris, Harden, and Richards, wish Mr. Roush and his team all the luck next season and hope that they will again have a championship team. The Cadiz squad had a very good regular season of 15 wins and 5 losses. This does not include the tournament scoring records. This is the first year that the Cardinals have had a winning season since the 19H3-HH triumphs, when the squad won 18 while losing M. The.Cardinal floormen also set a new school scoring, record this season of 1133 points The previous record of 1019 points was scored in the M6-H7 tussels. 67 1953-QE Basketball Schedule Mt. However, the girls didn't lose any enthusiasm. They had a nice following, a factor which proves a few folks still enjoy girls' basketball. ELMTARX QQHOOL Last September one hundred and nine pupils entered the doors of Cadiz Central School for the first time, thus beginning the great adventure of American childhood. nI'm going to Schoolln the child says proudly. Each child is different. He comes from a different home, different parents , and has different experiences and background. He has good and bad charac- ter traits, personal habits, and mental attitudes. In the elementary school the child learns the tool subjects known in the ngood old daysn as Readin', writin', and 'Rithmetic. In the early days when America was predominately rural in population, no other subjects were needed and the child was taught other valuable lessons at home. Today our living habits and customs have changed completely and the schools have changed, too. The three R's have become the six R's for now the child is taught Responsibilities, Rights, and Relationships. This is necessary because the home in most instances no longer takes the time to teach these virtues. Many agencies such as moving pictures, radio, and television, compete with the school for the ch1ld's attention and interest The school must meet this challenge by changing its methods and procedures as it finds better ways to interest the child and stimulate his thinking. AThe elementary school has great influence upon the child for here is laid the foundation of all future learning. Here he learns discipline, good habits of study, and respect for the rights of others. In the elementary school children soon realize that everyone does not learn equally well. Some learn their lessons faster and remember them longer than others. There is, however, one lesson all can learn and it is one of the essentials--Good Citizenship. Only as the schools teach and the children learn this lesson do we preserve our Democracy and Freedom. flw'z 6'?r-'5- , Q 1 L, C.Mason, J.Keesey, er P.Reed, E.Sick1e, R.Rotkoski.
