ACADEMIC HON ORARIES Phi Beta Kappa is the highest scholastic honorary lor students of the lilmeral arts and sciencesg it is open lo those students in the upper tenth of the junior class anfl tl1c upper fifth of the senior class who have clisplayerl a mature personality and an intense worldly interest. Exemplary scholarship and character, in aclclition to memhership in the upper eighth of the junior class or the upper filth of the senior class, qualifies one for admission to Tau Beta Pi, the highest national engineering honorary. The organization aims to create a spirit of liheral education in the engineering schools of America. Freslnnen, loo, are eligible for aclmission to academic honoraries. These are Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa. Each spring on Moving Up Day, those junior women who have proven their excellence in leadership, scholar- ship and service are tapped for membership in Mortar Board. The purpose of Mortar Board is to promote high standards among the Bucknell women. As a means to this end Mortar Board broadcasts the news in the Womenis Dining Hall three times a week. This year Mortar Board also sponsored the Ugly Man Contest as a fund raising project. Omicron Delta Kappa is the national honorary for junior and senior men who are in the upper thirty-five per cent of the men students in scholarship and who are noted for their excellence in service, character and leadership in campus life. The faculty and student members oi this honorary have as their purpose the promotion of hetlcr leadership and understanding.
