DRAMA ln Its fnrst year of actual classwork the Benson Drama Department accom pllshed many worth whale actlvutues establushlng Benson as havung one of the leading hugh school drama departments nn Portland On Friday November I4 l952 the Drama Classes presented an Assembly program of two One Act Plays under the darectnon of May L Hentkemper The fnrst of these was IF MEN PLAYED CARDS AS WOMEN DO a comedy In one act by George S Kaufman wlth Paul Pattee and Kenth Lyons as student dnrectors and the followung cast Carl Schnoor Don Osborn Dwnght Campbell Btll Rutherford The second play A NIGHT AT AN INN by Lord Dunsany had Wullard Crlpps as student durector Darrell Ernckson rn charge of lughts and Cllfford Bunday an charge of propertres wnth the follownng cast Roger Kuchunka Lowell Powell Ralph Summons B1llTroyer Wayne Mcrrns Tommy Robbuns Cluff Bundy and Laurence Colvlll At a matlnee performance on January 29 I953 two more one act plays were presented by the Benson Drama Department AFRAID OF THE DARK by Wnlluam E Callahan and SUBMERGED by Cottman and Shaw Two very unterestung sets were developed by Mr Sveforth and the Stage Crew The cells of Death Row In a penntentnary for the fnrst play and a forward compartment IH a wrecked and submerged submarune for the second show Cast nn AFRAID OF THE DARK were the followlng student Wlllle Gullck Tom Chrnstopherson Juan Gerald Perala The Captain Bernard Wennermark The Chaplain Kenneth Waldo Guards Tom Turner Bob Lane Keuth Lyons SUBMERGED was chosen to represent Benson an the Portland Public Schools Hlgh School Drama Festuval on Wednesday February I8 I953 for whvch Benson Polytechnnc School was host to the Drama Departments of Roosevelt Luncoln and Grant on that date and Jefferson Gurls Polytechnnc Washtngton Cleveland and Franklnn Hugh Schools on Wednesday February 25 from IOO to 400 pm Appearnng IU both performances of SUBMERGED were the follownng students Dunn Bob Styles Shaw Ruchard Schultz Bruce Don Worth MacAndrews lCommanderJ Darrell Errckson Nab Wayne Morrus .Iorgson Jnm Srmpson Wlth the bestequlpped h gh school audltornum In Portland the expert technlcal drrectnon of Mr Sueforth the professnonal work of the well tranned stage crew and the vutaluty of Benson students the Benson Drama Department achneved an excellent season s work ID I952 l953 I . 1 1 1 1 ' , , .
