BAREFOOT Principal Mrs. ELSIE THOMPSON Secretary rtytg£ ScAooC In completing your high school course I am sure that you will want to take time and evaluate the time and effort you have put into your work here. It seems to me that you might ask yourselves the following questions: 1. HAVE I DEVELOPED A RESPECT FOR SCHOLARSHIP AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT? Classroom work is the primary purpose of our public schools. Our nation is calling for men and women who have developed the self discipline imposed by the work of the class- room. Unless students have been able to profit through classroom experiences and gained respect for scholarship and academic achievement, the most important goal of education has been missed. Learning is the chief characteristic of an educated person. 2. HAVE I LEARNED TO LIVE WITH AND GET ALONG WITH OTHER PEOPLE? No person lives unto himself or herself. The day of the hermit and caveman has passed. With our improved means of communication and transportation, it is imperative that men and women work with each other. More people are unable to make a success in their work today because of their inability to get along with other people than for any other single reason. You must be able to give and take. The viewpoint of others must always be taken into consideration. 3. HAVE I.LEARNED TO THINK CLEARLY AND ACT UPON FACTS? One of the earmarks of an educated person is the ability to think straight --to distinguish between truth and error. Clear thinkers will save the day for our nation and world --not the radicals and hotheads. 4. HAVE I DEVELOPED AN APPRECIATION OF ALL OF MY GOD -GIVEN GIFTS --PHYSICAL, MENTAL and SPIRITUAL? One of the clear characteristics of an educated person is his or her full realization that his or her strength comes from a higher power. Our responsibility is to develop and use those God -given talents and gifts. Are we grateful for these gifts? Do we use them solely for selfish purposes? 5. HAVE I LEARNED TO RECOGNIZE AND APPRECIATE THE ETERNAL VERITIES OF LIFE? The truly educated person respects honor, integrity, truth, charity, love and all the other imperishable charactistics of the good life. Do you try to cultivate these things in your own lives? The Great Teacher said, What does it Profit a Man to Gain the World and Lose his Soul? Education of the heart must go along with education of the head. Our best wishes go with you in all your future endeavors. I trust that Benson High School has given you some appreciation of the above realities of an educated person. Think on These Things Wm. J. In my lap lay my old battered annual of 1958. Presently my youngest son ran to me and asked, Mommie, do you really know all of those people? Suddenly it dawned upon me that I had actually lost track of many of my old classmates. I made up my mind then and there to find out where each one was and what he was doing. Upon many inquiries, telpehone calls, and letters, these are the facts I gathered: Linda Allen is happily married to Charles Holmes. They are living in a nice little house in a small mountain town where they publish the only daily paper. Their two children are quite talented in music. Billy Barbour and Billy Lee are in great competition. They both own a chain of hardware stores in many of the towns in North Carolina. It would make anyone happy to visit Linda Lou Barbour in her new home. She and Robert have just moved into it. The children ' s rooms are just darling. During Marie Arrington ' s junior year in college she was not only May Queen but was crowned Miss North Carolina. We always felt that her charm would take her to the top. Glenn Bailey has really done well for himself and his family. It is obvious that the science research business was for him. He is now president of a well known firm. Roy Jones can be found any time, working in the Pine State building in Dunn. He took over his brother ' s job immediately after graduation. It is surprising, yet true, that Joyce Clayton, Linda Stewart, Helen Parrish, and Shirley Whitman are still sticking together. They and their husbands are joint owners of Rose ' s Dime Store. There is now a new and modern service station in Benson. Naturally the owners are Glenn Barefoot and Landis Barbour. They are both happily married. Don Parrish has certainly made a great success in his career of forestry. It was a real pleasure to meet his wonderful wife. Sue Byrd and Jackie have been married for about nine years now, and have a house full of little red-heads. Jerald Denning and P. B. Jernigan are two of the most outstanding Ford dealers in the eastern part of the state. The largest and most fertile farms around Benson are owned by L. W. Godwin, John Denning, and Johnny Morgan. There is always plenty of entertainment in Johnny ' s home. He has the most mischievous children in the country. After graduation, Janice Hudson, Faye Godwin, and Carolyn Jernigan went to Raleigh and secured secretarial positions. They have retired now and are married. Janice and Faye live within calling distance of each other. The newest rage among the teenagers is Bobby Johnson. It didn ' t take him long to take over Elvis ' place. I found Martha Hill, now a Johnson, quite busy keeping track of a lot of little sailors. Lynn Price and Linda Suggs are dashing models in New York City. They have many many admirers in the big city. Glenda Lee has always been good in business. Her husband thinks she is the best secretary ever to come out of Benson High School. The beautiful theatre now going up in California is being built by our Chris Johnson. He has really gone places in the theatre business. The new Master of Ceremonies for American Bandstand is Don Ray Matthews. Dan Johnson ' s good looks got him an announcing job on television. Now the two wives can sit in their living rooms and keep an eye on Don and Dan. Larry Miller and Paul Gibbs are playing together on a professional baseball team. Their team wins almost every time. Sue Beasley and Pat Lee both own restaurants in Raleigh. They are really mopping up. At the present, Janice West is keeping books for Jackie Glover, who is an outstanding artist. His son is show- ing a talent for art also. After Mary Woody finished at Peace, she decided to come back home and settle down. She and her husband have made their home in Benson. Tony Lewis is a designer for the Willis Company. The 1969 Willis is really a scream. Carolyn Sue is married to a wealthy doctor. She is his very capable nurse. When Stacy Norris finished high school, he joined the Navy again. He is now captain of his ship. For the last nine years, Sue Parrish and Ed have been leading a very happy married life. They are living in Erwin. One of their little girls is mascot cheerleader at Erwin High. The new agriculture teacher at Four Oaks High School is Larry Creech. He is helping the senior class put on the play, Grandad Goes Wild. The best Be-Boper in show business now is Billy Evans. I mean the kids think he is a cool cat. Peggy Norris has her own drug store now. Her childern can almost keep her busy making cokes and stacking ice cream cones. Phillip Dudley has found that he really had a musical talent, and is now conducting a very good dance band. Who else but Ken Johnson would own the largest men ' s clothing store in town? All the boys get their Sunday best there. There was no mistake made when Betty Jo Johnson was voted Most Likely to Succeed. She is now happily married to some man with the name of Rockefeller. This research of the Senior Class of 1958 was a real joy to me. Through it I found that some of the finest and most wonderful people in the world were a part of our graduating class. By LaRue McLamb Chris Johnson 32 W CCe Z cu at We, the members of the Senior Class of 1959, deeply treasure the wonderful memories of those good ole days at Benson Hi. Long after many of the things we learned in high school are forgotten, those memories will still hold a very dear spot in our hearts. Oh, how wonderful the past twelve years have been! September 1956--My, how proud we were when we entered Benson High School as freshmen! Oh, what a silly bunch, and we giggled forever eternal. Girls, remember how Mrs. Sorrell used to have to call us d own for giggling? That year found us with very little business to take care of other than collecting our class dues. Our sophomore year began with the election of these class of- ficers: Joyce Clayton, president; Carolyn Sue Massengill, vice president; Linda Suggs, secretary; Paul Gibbs, treasurer; Marie Ar- rington, reporter; and Don Parrish, sergeant at arms. That was the year we sponsored the Sauline Players. Our percentage of the ad- mission amounted to $30 which we donated to the school. Spring soon came along, bringing with it a picnic at Williams ' Lake. The following fall we returned to school as juniors. That year we were engaged in many pleasant activities. Staging the play, The Old Crab, was an unforgettable event. Then came the responsibility of publishing THE STUDENT. Our editor, Glenn Bailey, found this to be quite a headache. Finally came the highlight of our junior year, the Junior -Senior Banquet. Remember all the fun we had decorating the country club, using a Southern plantation theme? Our great success was due largely to the leaderhips of President Glenn Bailey, Vice President Linda Barbour, Secretary Carolyn Sue Massengill, Treasurer Sue Parrish, and Reporter Lynn Price. Gradua- tion came with Keith Neighbors as chief marshal, assisted by Betty Jo Johnson, Marie Arrington, Carolyn Sue Massengill, Linda Allen, Glenn Bailey, Sue Byrd, and Linda Barbour. As Sophisticated Seniors we started off the year with a bang. We began by electing as class officers Betty Jo Johnson, president; Don Parrish, vice president; Carolyn Sue Massengill, secretary; and Sue Byrd and Jerald Denning, treasurers. We really began to feel like seniors when we voted Debbie McLamb and Donnie Holmes in as our mascots. Then came the time to order our class rings. With this excitement our spirits really began to rise. In November we presented Grandad Goes Wild, a comedy consisting of twelve characters. Boy, was that play a success! What a turn out! ! ! Under the careful management of Betty Jo Johnson, editor of the 1959 edition of the TATLER, the annual staff really got off on the right foot. My, the trouble we had getting those pictures back in order to meet our annual deadlines! Remember how thrilled we were over our Junior -Senior Banquet and our Washington -New York trip? How we longed for those high- light events, and it seemed as though they would never get here. 1956-1959! Wonderful years! Glorious years! With all the tears, heartaches, and disappointments, they were the happiest and most memorable years of our lives. Those were the years that molded our lives for the future.
