Faculty page 85 Activities page 161 i Seniors page 7 Sports page 109 To the Class of 1983, “Perhaps some day it will be pleasant to remember these things.” (Virgil) I do not need to remind you how much we have all matured during our four years at the high school or how we have come together as a class. Without abandoning old friends and interests, we have made new friends and learned to appreciate our diverse abilities. As we entered our senior year, our enthusiasm for building a class spirit set the pace for the successes we had all year. I also do not need to say that our class will be remembered. Being ourselves and giving our best together, we have left our mark on Belmont High. Our achievements will be preserved as later classes build upon the examples we have set. Finally, I do not need to say that our class will live on in our remembrance of each other. Thanks for the memories. It was a special team, a team with unity and spirit; such qualities deemed the team successful despite its record. The seniors encouraged the development of the underclassmen, and along with Coach Apprille and fine assistants, Belmont Football is destined to become more successful in the upcoming years. This year the team saw many hard-fought games against some of the best teams in the state. Melrose, Lexington, Woburn, Needham were all top ten teams who found Belmont to be a valiant competitor. The season ended in a strong effort against Watertown, a game that exemplified the effort exerted throughout the year. no Boys Soccer 14-4-3 Seated I to r — J. Moutafis, R. MacLean, R. Corso, D. The 1 982 Soccer Team was one of the most successful teams in the high school’s history. Piloted by coaches Jim Mahoney and Kevin McMullen, the team became the Middlesex League’s runner-up and a State Tourney semi-finalist. In the States, the boys beat Arlington 1 -0, and top-seed Andover 1 -0 before bowing to Cambridge, 0-1 . The team is best characterized by the strong bond of unity abounding amidst the players and coaches on and off the field, thus earning them the reputation as true “winners.” Long after the season’s conclusion, memories linger on: JM on the sidelines, Dobies’ volley, Winchester 1 -0, 7th in the State, and Johnny-on-the-spot. 112 113 Girls Soccer 10-4-1 First Row: Kathy Bolen, Julie Parker, Tri-Capt. Through long practices, dedication, and a desire to win, we won our last four games which enabled us to qualify for the state tourney, making it the third consecutive year participating in states. Our most memorable game was beating Weston 2-0, for this game brought out the potential spirit and ability which we were capable of. Coach Howick provided us with constant motivation and tremendous enthusiasm. Congratulations to all the team members for their hard work and cooperation. Each of them was essential to the success of the season. And of course we will never forget the exciting “grand tour”, cone lines, and the senior bench. 114 115 Field Hockey 3-12-3 First Row: Kathy Oram, Co-Capt. Joanne Fay, Co-Capt. Alicia Ellard, Nancy Donavan. Second Row: Linda Pitts, Donna D ' Andrea, Jean Barrel!, Laura Parrell, Barbara Donahue, Jeri Solomon, Andrea Sherman, Coach Bobbi O’Hare Perseverance and excellent playing enabled the Field Hockey T earn to break into the win column five times and to exceed total number of wins in the past three years. Discipline, cooperation and precision were the key ingredients responsible for the teams’ amazing improvement. The girls’ remarkable growth as individuals and much-improved team record is something worth admiring. 116 Cross Country The 1 982-83 Cross-Country season was truly an outstanding one. Under the coaching of Tony Guarente, the boys had their best season in years, with the record of 7-2. The girls also had a successful season, with a 5-4 record. Leading the boys to success was all-star Robert Danahue, winning most of the varsity races this season. Other “elite feet” were Karl Goertze, Billy Sullivan, Micheal Lyons, John McGuirk, Erik Goertze, Stephan Heller, and Matt Martin. In the girls ' races, Gayle Murry dominated. Undefeated all season, she set Belmont’s cross country record and set the league record for Winchester’s course. All in all the cross-country team’s record are something to look back upon with pride. 118 Golf Team 6-2-1 The 1982 Golf Team featured many fine players whose futures in golf are bright. The team finished the season 6-2-1 for a second place finish in the tough Middlesex League. This record also qualified the team for the state tournament for the second straight season. Junior Captain Bill Curtain finished the season with the best record at 6-1-2. He was elected to the Middlesex League All-Star team by the League’s coaches. Junior David Salinos had a fine season posting a 6-2-1 mark and was voted an Honorable mention All-Star in the League. Salinos also placed third in League individual tourney. Juniors Peter and John Mollica and John Higgins displayed great potential for next year’s season. Sophomores Mike Murphy, Dan Higgins, and John Deignan round off the squad as three young players hungry to get their hands on the Middlesex League crown next year. They were unbeaten in the would-be Middlesex League. The girls enjoyed not only an excellent collective record, but also improved dramatically as individuals. The highpoint of the season was the incredible victory over Wayland. Definitely another terrific and memorable season for the awesome girls’ swim team. 120 121 Cheerleaders First Row: Nancy Nally, Pam Dalakalis, Cindy Groak, Kim Murphy, Karen Kelleher, Barbara Ciccolo. Second Row: Kim Carew, Joanne Sullivan, Laurie Damiano, Dorothy Lynch, Jane Foppiano, Nicole Bonnano The Varsity Cheerleaders worked together with great fun and excitement throughout the 1 982-83 year. They supported four varsity sports: football, soccer, basketball and hockey. Due to this team’s dedication, spirit, and enthusiasm it placed first in a competition with all the Middlesex League cheerleaders. To all the teams they would like to say, “Thanks for the fun and all the great memories!” 122 123 Hockey 7-11-2 T. Connors, D. Bruseeze, M. Sheeran, R. Burns, D. Dobies, T. Koundakjain, B. McLean, D. Muzzioli This year’s Hockey Team had a better season than its record indicates. Plagued by injuries to key players, the team had to rely on the younger members of the squad to keep the team alive. Many of the close losses in the first half of the season were reclaimed in the second half once the starters returned. The closely knit team’s season was highlighted by a four-game winning streak. We defeated top teams and proved that we could compete in the tough Middlesex League. Thanks to the coaching staff and strong team, they enjoyed a memorable season. 124 D. Muzzioli, Asst. Coach, B. Burns, J. Kiley, B. McLean, D. Loser, S. Vigirolo, Coach Boys Indoor Track 5-3 The Boys’ Indoor Track Team had an excellent season this year. Led by seniors Robbie Milofsky, Sean Davey and John Martinez, the runners stunned the Middlesex League with their 5-3 record, losing two meets by just one point. The season was highlighted by the terrific performances of three league all-stars on the team. Coach Jim Blackburn deserves much credit for directing this team away from its 1980-81 record of 0-9. 126 Girls Indoor Track 4-2 Depth and determination contributed to a winning season for the girls’ squad this year, second only to powerful Reading. The use of some of the finest indoor track facilities in the world paid off, as records were shattered in many events. The records set by Martha Barrette in the shot put, Kathy Oram in the 600, Sandra Pellerin, Martha Barrette, Alicia Ellard, and Kathy Oram in the mile relay, and Liz Deeley, Andrea Sherwin, Nancy Santoro, and Ellen Gallant in the shuttle hurdle relay indicate the talent and diligence of the girls, and superior coaching by Mel Wenner. No one will question Mel’s contributions to this school and his team — especially the seniors. We love him and wouldn’t trade him for any other coach in the world. 127 Boys Basketball 11-7 Bottom Row: Doug Arbeely, Co-Captains — Steve Brennan Bob Corso, Tommy Dorsey, Dennis Washington, Peter Erickson, Vekan Anserlian. Top Row: Coach Paul Lyons, Lot Bates, Jeff Boyden, Chris Messer, Andy Collins, George Lampl, Brian Knibbs, Coach Dennis Doble After a slow start, the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team came on strong in the latter part of the season to finish with its second consecutive winning season. After dropping five of their first six games, the Marauders pulled together to win eight of the final ten. The highlights of the season were the unbelievable victories over league powerhouse, Lexington and Reading. 128 129 Wrestling 9-7 First Row: Asst. Highlights of the season included: a first division finish in the Middlesex League, the first win ever over Melrose, and a narrow 26-21 loss to state powerhouse, Burlington. The team was led by senior captains Kevin Haverty, Mark Beucler, Stephen Farrell, Jim Mullowney, and David Robinson. The team’s winning record and many of the wrestlers excellent individual records made this a final season the seniors can be proud of. 130 131 Gymnastics 7-0-1 Front Row: Julie Estin, Co-Capt. Amy Lipkin, Co-Capt. Lisa Hume. Back Row: Coach Michele McCarthy, Ellen Santoro, Andrea Garguilo, Amy Pritchard, Colleen Egan, Amy Rivers, Denise Brackesy The Gymnastics Team had an awesome season under first year coach Michele McCarthy. Our team was led by senior co-captains Lisa Hume and Amy Lipkin as well as talented Julie Estin who took first place in state individuals. Due to an unbelievable and breath-taking tie against arch-rival Burlington, 1 16.45-1 16.45, we remained undefeated and captured the title of Middlesex League Co-Champions. After qualifying for North Districts and being seated fourth we had only one goal in mind: Beat Burlington. With the pressure on, each team member gave forth her best performance and with a little extra spirit we placed third in the meet and put an end to Burlington. Congratulations for a well-deserved successful season! 132 Girls Basketball Front Row: C. Makarushka, K. Madigan (Capt.), T. Bremis, T. Long. Back Row: Coach Mr. Howick, C. Pazzanese, J. Looney, J. Howick, L. Kerzner, B Donahue, S. Machado. Missing from picture: S. Brogna (Capt.), C. Polcari Although the Girls’ Basketball Team didn’t have a winning record, the marked improvement they have made, in this year alone, is obvious in both their attitude and in their skill on the court. Many of their losses were by only a very few points. Despite these close games, the team never lost its determination and spirit and continued to fight for victory in every game. Because of their determination the girls were able to beat the division ranked Burlington team. This team deserves a lot of credit for its superior attitude and never-ending quest for victory. 134 135 Boys Swimming 7-5 Front Row: D.J. Wagner, Benjie Rosales, Asst. The winning of the league championship meet was an awesome feat. They beat the top ranked Winchester team. The surprising performances from newcomers and the incredible times from veteran swimmers made this a season worth remembering.
