K . 5 . . . ,f ,ah I .,..,... History without facts is worthless. Itis like Lewiston without Frenchmen or the Holly without a Stripper. And, realizing this, I will attempt to establish a factual, if seemingly trivial framework upon which a history of the Class of 1966 can be constructed. Our frst category is Freshman Week: that was the week that was. It was when we wore our best clothes, our best faces . . . when we began to dance every night at the Den Cmuch to the amazement of upperclassmenj . . when we sought the advice of Bill Gardner, Dan Ustick, George Stone, Peter Gomes, Betty Ann Little, Iani Downing, Cilla Bonney . . . without ever letting them think for one minute that we really needed them to tell us what to do. It was then we decided among us who in the gang would turn out eventually to be the hottest ticketv, the greatest athlete, the best lover, the loneliest bookworm . . . when we heard how great we were lhighest average college board scores to date, more than an even chance of staying in and doing wellj . . . and it was when we were generally pretty excited, quite scared, and almost totally unconscious of the hard work that lay ahead. Freshman Week . . . sometimes it seems like a million years ago, but I ,ll bet money that today, right now, it seems like just yesterday. Think back to the days when we were either going out of our way to bump off our shoe dates . . . or going out of our way to bump into our shoe dates . . . the days when we jirst heard from the Bookstore, 'Cotta' penny, deahPv and from the Den, Want marmalade on those muffinsilv . . . the days when all the characters in our class began to congeal into one spirited body. We,ve experienced these four years together. It is in deep appreciation, therefore, of the fact that we were all in the same boat that I proceed. The Class of 1966 showed spirit from the start. We organized dance nights in the Den, a skating party, a ski trip, and dorm get- togethers. The girls helped to plan dorm outings, Christmas parties, the guys jinally got up the nerve to do some serenading. In numbers greater than ever before we joined clubs, took out petitions for class and organizational positions, and, as time went on, became more and more determined that our class was going to be a little diferent, a little better. i fur-IN Q46 -+55 . . fi N Q. 4 if S K s.at 'W'5t 'N Z A 5 6 . sb., A 7 . 'fM 'lg' 'f ' ' , K in I l just as our spirit seemed to be at its peak ftoward the end of our Freshman yearj, the soon-to-be-familiar cries of transfer, dis- satisfaction and suppression of freedom began to ring out. This, I 'm sorry to say, is where our upper class friends deserted us. We were comforted with phrases such as Don't sweat it . . . this happens to everybody after they ,ve been here a whilel' . . . and . . . It,s just catching up to you that's all . . . freshman always think they're going to turn this place upside downv. We began to have second thoughts about everything from ourselves to our parents to school to life itself For many of us, second semester Freshman year and most of our Sophomore year constituted the 6 most confused and generally unhappy time of our college lives. But somehow the spirit of '66 saw us through this mess and as far as I ,m concerned we were never really down or really out. This reality of cohesion perhaps gave birth to itself but it was certainly nourished by the collective experiences and personalities of our class. The tragic and untimely death of Dale Hatch, a fellow we hardly got to know, drew us closer together than ever be- fore. And who can forget in which class he was or to whom he was speaking as he heard of the death of President Kennedy. We shared with all the world, in this instance, in showing our true feelings. YVe,ve made forward strides in improving relations between the administration and the studentsg welve been instrumental in changing the format of the student government on campus, welve worked for and attained seemingly trivial things like no hours for senior women, a revised drinking policy, and extended hours in the library, the Den, and the Post Ojhce. We have seen a special emphasis placed on students rights and privileges . . . sometimes we failed in expressing ourselves through the proper channels . . . sometime the fault lay with the administration. But the fact that should be real to us is that we really did know, again for the most part, what type of school this was and what type of individuals we were. Our concern at this time should be what we are going to do from here. What are we going to make of ourselves as a result of what has happened - not what could have happened or should have happened? As I look back upon these four years, I think we have all greatly profited from being here. We learned the importance of co-operation. YVho among us can say that he or she has not been helped out in this academic struggle by the last minute appearance of helpful notes or a private nug,'-session? How many of our number have not felt somewhere along the line that if it werenlt for special class friends we might never have made it through an especially troubled night. A I , I ff We learned the value of sincerity and concern. There are few in this class who have not experienced the deep cornunication possible with others via the bull-session, the all-nighter, the cup of regular cojfee. At the same time there are few who have not lent money to, or spent money on a Bates friend, senior or underclassmen. There are many who have realized that giving time and attention to someone is worth much more than sitting around complaining about something that always seems better in the morning anyway. Weive learned the importance of preparing for our lives in the future. Some of us learned it only a couple of weeks ago, but, nevertheless, it has been a lesson. Weve been contemplating grad school, military service, steady employment in teaching, business, and professional jields. Weve even got a few in our class who have decided that the possibility of a Batesy marriage isn,t such a corny thing after all. - Douglas White , A -. A pigeon when annoyed by the bells on its neck will fy higher and higherg but it does not know that to fold its wings will stop the tinkling of the bells. A man when irked by his shadow may run faster and faster, but he does not understand that to stay in a shady place will eliminate his shadow. So the foolish people who run fast and fly high find smooth ground to be a sea of suffering, whereas people of insight who stay in the shade and fold their wings discover a craggy slope to be a level road. - ANONYM O US ZEN B UDDI-I I ST --r Q.
