YVhile City is basically like most of the hundreds of high schools throughout the country, it does differ in that it has a long history and a multitude of traditions. Here every year classes of freshmen and sophomores enter to take the places of those seniors who have graduated. They pass through the same stages of develop- ment as their predecessors. So, too, was the education of the youth of medieval days. As did the young men of old, today's sophomores and freshmen enter The Castle as mere pages. During their first few weeks, they become acquainted with the faculty and each other. Since this meeting is the begin- ning of their stay at City College, it is also the beginning of our story. As time passes, these pages acquire knowledge and skill and are raised to the position of squires. The means of gaining their knowledge and skill is activity in the clubs and sports which are next illustrated in our story. As squires, when they are almost at the top of the ladder, these students become proficient in what they have already learned and acquire new skills and ideas until they are at last able to meet the qualifications of knighthood. And so our school life progresses. Each grade becomes a stage of the personal de- velopment of the student. Like the knight of old, the City student of to- day gains not only the knowledge which will help him in later life, but also the intangible qualities which are so indispensable in our modern world. Through the classroom the student becomes ac- quainted with the works ofmen and nations who have come before us, of the fine points of language, and of the endless possibilities of mathe- matics. Through sports and co-curricular activi- ties he acquires integrity, good sportsmanship, and the ability to cooperate with others. These are the qualities which go to make up the Black Knights. Although this book is an account of the scholas- tic year of 1954-55, it is also the story of the de- velopment of every class that has graduated from this institution, from the lowly estate of the fresh- man to the pinnacle of seniorhood. Likewise, it is the completion of the story of one class while it is only the beginning of another's history. This constant growth and development is what makes City College the great school that it is. In the preparation of this yearbook, the editors have tried to bring out every phase of life at City in order to give a true picture of this, OUR CITY COLLEGE!
