Administration Strives For Change Mr. Peter Schneller - Principal Dr. Kermit Franks - Vice-Principal Mr. Schneller has innovated many successful programs in his six years as principal at Ballard. Along with the continuation of independent study and the eight period day, Mr. Schneller has helped to plan the new grading system involving passffail grading and fractional credits. Mr. Schneller's efforts in developing new and different programs have stimulated new thinking at Ballard High. Probably the biggest change at Ballard this year was that of administration. Our new vice-principal, Dr. Kermit Franks, is well qualified after having served as vice-principal at West Seattle High School for eight years. He was involved this year in a program by which administrators in the .Seattle School System transferred to gain greater knowledge of the high schools in the city. Ballard was privileged to be one of nine high schools in the United States to take part in an Exchange Principal Program sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Mr. John Baker, of Christchurch School in Hampshire, England, came to the United States to observe our school system, with plans for changing from their present school system to our comprehensive one. To supplement our activity fund, Mr. Baker helped organize a Walk-a-thon, the first of its kind in the United States. This took place of the annual candy sale, and it gave students and faculty a chance to show their school spirit by acquiring sponsors, walking around Greenlake, and donating the money to our activity fund. Mr. john Baker - Exchange Vice-Principal 1:7 r . Custodial Staff: Barneyjohanson, Neil Wells, Barbara Wells, William Harisen, Claude Hobson. Service Behind The Scene Maintaining a clean and well kept building for the students of Ballard High is thejob of our custodians and matron. This year under Claude Hobson, the head custodian, Ballard had two foreign exchange custodians, Mr. Einar Gislason from Iceland and Mr. Ricardo Aplacible from the Philippines. We welcomed these two men, who, along with all the others, made our school a better place in which to learn. Lunchroom duties were performed by our able cooks. Headed by Ann Derksen, Lunchroom Manager, they prepared hundreds of well balanced lunches and snacks each day. X S .. . X .ef Qs Q I X V 5 ,. 4' ke ' gf K ' .. ..t. . A New pproach Under the direction of Mr. Claude Willson, the new head of the department, and a staff of fifteen teachers, Language Arts students had a full schedule of reading, understanding and writing. Sophomores started off the year with Greek Mythology and Romeo ana' juliet. juniors concentrated on American authors. To Kill A Mockingbird, Our Town and The Crucible were read by all eleventh grade students. Seniors, who only needed one semester of Language Arts to graduate, spent a good part of the course reading MacBeth, The Canterbury Tales, Lord Of The Flies and Animal Farm. Seniors could also take college preparation courses, such as Advanced Literature and Senior Reading. All students spent some time in the study of poetry. The Language Arts department offered a new program this year to insure individualized attention to students with reading problems. The class, open to any student, was started to develop reading skills. Completely voluntary, the class was held in the library conference room under the direction of Mrs. Polly Weston, an instructional aide. Students went into the class whenever they felt they needed it and could quit going when they had completely benefited from the program. ln some cases, Language Arts teachers assigned pupils into the program in place of the ordinary class period. The same subjects were taught, but were covered more thoroughly. With no more than eight per class, students were assured of receiving a closer personal understanding of the subject. Through this program, it was hoped that all students could acquire the ability to read, the most important of all skills. Experimentation Several Contemporary Problems and United States History classes initiated a new approach during the first quarter of this year. The new program was shown to be successful in eliminating a large amount of repetition in the courses. It involved the team-teaching of Mr. Tjaden, Mr. Creighton, and Mr. Kourkoumelis. This approach allowed the teachers to specialize in one aspect of teaching, to group the students according to ability and let them work at their own speed, and to reexamine departmental subject matter for more effective instruction, Grading method was one of the major changes incorporated into the new system. Under this, there were only three possible grades that a student could receiveg A, incomplete, or withdrawal. To measure the value of this new approach, its results may be compared to those achieved by the majority of the teachers who continue to instruct in the popular method. This approach was experimental, but if the school system has access to the additional teachers, time, and funds which were found to be required to maintain the individual instruction needed, it will be tried again. Computer Class Open Future Careers Leading the innovations in Ballard's Mathematics Department this year was a computer math course taught by Mr. Alven Thorson. The course started this year with only one class, but the positive response indicated the possibility of additional classes in the future. The programming section of an actual computer was used in the instruction of basic programming technique. Students enrolled in this course worked problems which became progressively more difficult as they became more proficient in their skill. Therefore, students progressed at their own rate, and continuing for more than one semester was optional. 3 X K1 5' X:-. YQ? Scienc Links Tod This year a combined course of chemistry and physics was introduced at Ballard. Students that were enrolled in this course specialized in either one of these areas. Mrs. Hendrickson, a new addition to our faculty this year, supervised those students concentrating on chemistry, while Mr. Dahl had charge of those specializing in physics. With instruments used in the physics aspect of this course, students detected vibrations of movements as small as 1f50,000 of an inch, in the building. Traditional science classes also continued to play an important part in our Science Department, this year. Ballard had the largest botany class enrollment in the city. This course, taught by Mr. Blessing, gave a knowledge of plant life and a practical background in landscaping. M? 'K c Jerry Andrews Donald Burnett William Calder Yell Leader Head Golf Dept, Head Advisor Coach One of the major changes in Business Education this year occurred in the Typing courses. Classes were conducted under the new method of Team Teaching. According to this system, there were two teachers in a class, along with a professional to give individual aid. This system also enabled a student to advance at his own speed, completing more or less than the standard requirements in a semester. After previously experimenting with a new system of Shorthand, the department returned to the Gregg method. Although harder to learn, the Gregg method was more desirable in surrounding business colleges. Retailing, Shorthand, Accounting and Office Practice, as well as Typing and other courses were offered at Ballard this year. All were designed to help prepare students for the business world. After successfully completing a series of these courses, many students were awarded Statements of Proficiency, to be used as references in obtainingjobs. Charles Fletcher Barbara Kosty Laura Preggey Virginia Reddie L'Don,t look at your keys Proficiency in math makes accounting easier. -i-w-, - Languages Facilitate Understanding In our Foreign Language classes a student learned not only the language in question, but participated actively, within the community, in foreign cultural projects sponsored by the department. Student-swapping with other countries, Balalaika Concerts, Pi'r'iata Parties and film tours of the Louvre in Paris represented some of the foreign enrichments of our Continuous Progress Program, where each student had a chance of earning an A Qif he wanted onel as he progressed at his own individual rate. Some of the subjects included were food and nutrition, textile and clothing, money management, and family relations. A popular course continued this year was Family Finance. In this class students learned how to purchase home furnishings. They also studied the value of comparison shopping and consumers' protection. Available again was power sewing. This course offered girls the chance to learn industrial sewing. Not only does Home Economics prepare one for todayas world, but it also readies one for tomorrow's. A few of the classes offered this year were: Child Development, Foods, Clothing, and Home Management, Girls study modern techniques of sewing. Barb Winter tries her hand at cooking Industrial Arts Offers Opportunities Students practice acquired skills from Gas Engines Unlimited opportunities were offered in Industrial Arts this year. Programs were continued training students in the fields of machine operation and aircraft assembly, the latter being sponsored by Boeing. These programs guaranteed job placement after successful completion of the course. New equipment purchased by the department provided classes with the latest tools to work with. These tools produced a challenge for the students. Girls also entered the Industrial Arts scene. Co-ed Wood, Aircraft Assembly, and Gas Engines were offered again this year. Other classes included Metal Craft, Wood, and Technical Drawing. Mr. McGee instructs students in Co-ed Wood, Concentration is a must in Technical Drawing. Chairman Girls' Club Advisor Librar Introduces New Facilities Change was evident in the library this year with the acquisition of two new librarians. Mr. Ernest Schottg formerly librarian at Cleveland and Lincoln High Schools and Mrs. Priscilla Stixroodg formerly librarian at Asa Mercer junior High School. One of the most significant changes this year was the microfilm reader-printer. This machine condensed magazines onto microfilm which, when magnified on the reader-printer, enabled students to obtain information from certain articles. A copy of a page from a microfilmed magazine could be duplicated on this machine. The library acquired, on microfilm, some of the most widely read national magazines. The Xerox machine, another new addition to the library, enabled students to obtain copies of pages of regular magazines and books for their individual use. .J , Q f' we-axe Regina Cusworth Ernest Schott Priscilla Stixrood Library Secretary Head Librarian Assistant Librarian MAGAZINES Peter Kudenchuk takes advantage of our periodical library. Health and Physical Education Physical Education presented students with new challenges and skills to meet during the past year. For the first time boys took the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test. They were required to run, climb, and jump over obstacles laid out before them. Besides traditional sports, boys had the opportunity to participate in soccer, wrestling, handball, gymnastics, and weight lifting. During the year sophomore girls covered the basic skills of team sports, folk dancing, and gymnastics. Junior and senior girls had the option of several individual sports such as archery, volleyball, tennis, modern dancing, and rhythmic exercise. Visiting speakers and pertinent films helped the teachers of Health Education to offer their students the opportunity to understand such areas as first aid, hygiene, sex education, disease and drugs. t Field trips for Health classes included visits to the University of Washington Hospital and Birth Defects Clinic. bg fs A45 lx GX rr N s s 1, .. . The staff learned that practice and the help of others is essential in producing a yearbook. Four student photographers supplemented the pictures taken by professionals. i l Advisor : Mr. Carey the Year's Spirit The Shingle Staff tries to capture a school year in book form. Layouts have to be made, the copy has to fit the space left for it, and the pictures have to fit the right space. As the year goes on, the more the book grows. Deadlines come close and things donit look right, so they have to be done over again. It all takes time and patience, which Shingle members must have. Mr. Andrews, the Men's Club advisor, said that future plans include the development of a combined working team between the two groups. Hopefully this will generate new interest in the student body. The former all-male usher squad added three members of the opposite sex to its ranks. These students have given up their time to keep order at all our games and assemblies. Bob Ramsey, Y Band Marches in Victoria B.C. The Ballard High Marching Band is a hard working group composed of many talented students. This year, under the direction of Mr. Perry Barth, band director, the band both practiced and successfully performed the half-time shows at many football games. Through its music, the marching band helped to promote spirit and enthusiasm throughout the student body. The marching band was composed of two smaller musical groups. They were the 58 piece Concert Band made up basically of juniors and seniors, and the Sophomore Cadet Band. The Concert Band, along with the Cadet Band and Orchestra, put on a fall, winter, and spring concert, with the Concert Band playing many dynamic songs such as 'gProcession of the Sardar , 'fSpectrumU, and selected marches such as HAmericans We , and g'His Honor . The Cadet Band presented such songs as UWinter Carnivalw and 'gWestchester Overturew. The Concert Band also made it's presence known to the Noutside world by putting on two assemblies at Seattle Pacific College during February. One ofthe purposes of Orchestra at Ballard is to allow those students playing string instruments similar opportunities for MARCHING BAND: Front: Carl Fjelle-Drum Major, Pennock, Boller, Carbone, Kastner, LeQue, Wood, Brydges, Wasmund, Moen, Highfill, Loman, Byrum, Goodrich, Palm, Mr. Barth-Director. Because of this the Orchestra went about showing its talent by playing the background music for the spring musical, HMusic Manu. The instrumentation was rounded out with two final groups. They were the Stage Band, which entertained at the junior and Senior receptions, and performed in c'Show Bizn, and the rather small, but enthusiastic Pep Band. The Pep Band performed at basketball games and during pep assemblies. The biggest highlight of the year was the marching bandls trip to Victoria B.C. to march in the Queenis Day Parade in May. The Chorale, mostly seniors, was the busiest of the three groups, having numerous singing engagements throughout our Northwest community. They were invited to the National Music Educators, Conference held in Chicago on March 8 and 9. The Chorale ,journeyed to Yakima and to Vancouver, B.C. where they participated in performance clinics. This ensemble has arranged and published songs for their Ballard Chorale Series. Their unique arrangements featured the mandolin, guitar, piano, banjo, and percussion instruments which the members learned to play and to add variety to their numbers. The Chorale assisted the drama department in the production of HShow Biz '69', by performing selections from 'fFinian,s Rainbowf, They also were in the cast ofthe spring musical ccMusic Man. The Concert Choir consists ofjuniors and seniorsg the Cadet Choir consists mainly of sophomores. In addition to the three formal concerts staged at Ballard the three groups were presented on Channel 9 Christmas day in a program entitled uThe Spirit of Christmas in Song. Students engaged in library service were given the opportunity to learn the basic skills needed to become librarians by joining the Biblio Club. Meetings, parties, and teas for teachers were sponsored by this organization. Feast Club was formed for those interested in restaurant work. They catered at luncheons for school board members and other guests. Foreign Language Clubs still had strong appeal for our student body. Time was spent preparing for the upcoming activities. The Spanish Club enjoyed a Christmas party, an end of the year party, and participated in the Snoosellunction Function. French Club initiated a new program of folk singing and operated the traditional French sidewalk cafe at the Snoose Junction Function. German Club provided entertainment for its members at parties and other planned activities. Norwegian Club was one of the most vigorous clubs. Its long list of activities included a ski trip and the annual picnic at Norway Park. During Christmas they sang at the Norse home and presented a Norwegian Christmas show for an elementary school. They helped with open house and had a final good-bye party for the seniors. Ballard had shown great ability in the field of debate. Under the direction of Mr. Fred Kimball the Debate and Speech Club made a comeback in debate and forensic activities after a three-year absence. This has given Ballard students an opportunity to develop articulatory abilities and to compete against other Metro and area Catholic High Schools. Both the Beaver defense and offense looked impressive. ' Next, Ballard was pitted against Chief Sealth. Ballardis defense was especially tough, denying the Seahawks touchdowns after they had penetrated to the Beaver 4 and 5 yard lines. As a result, Ballard blasted Sealth 19-7. Ballard's Beavers bowed to the Shoreline Spartans 14-O, even though they outgained Shoreline in yardage and made more first downs. Ballard penetrated the Shoreline 15 yard line five times but failed to score. A tough Teddy defense and the absence of fullback Chuck Peck proved fatal for Ballard. Roosevelt handed Ballard a 21- 0 defeat. Although Ballard outplayed Shorecrest, the Beavers were nipped by the Highlanders 14-7. However, the game ended with Ballard in position to score again. Ingrahamis Rams earned a 21-6 victory over Ballard in a hard hitting game. Unfortunately, the Rams, offensejelled in this game. Next, the Lincoln Lynx downed the hard-luck Beavers 17-7. In the final game, Ballard routed Hale 21-14. The Beaver offense piled 274 yards, while the defense held Hale on the Beaver 28, 26, and 2 yard lines. .. - . My ' ? , ' 24 U11 'fill - V. v. In addition, Beaver harrier Tom Brockman, took ninth place in the All-Metrfi individual meet. Gary Nereim, Dave Anderson, and John Tuohy were also exceptional runners on the squad. jack Culver was voted captain by his teammates and Tom Brockman received the inspirational award. Ballard Trackmen Engage ln e ' Coach Beahm Darryl LaVerdure specializes in the highgjump, Coach Henning The 1970 Ballard track squad was considerably stronger than the Beaver track teams of the last few years. There was sufficient experience and depth in most every event since Ballard hosted a field of returning lettermen as well as many talented nonlettermen. This year's returning lettermen were John Tuohy, Ed Beaupre, Ron Thornton, Fred Jeffery, Bill Chism, Gary Marsall, Russ Sangrey, and Tom Brockman. Ballard had one of the finest coaching staffs in the city. Coaches Beahm and Henning were aided by Assistant Coach Cale Campbell who had extensive experience in coaching track. Among Ballardls stronge events were the 100 and 220 yard sprints, the 440 yard race, the 880 yard relay, and the long as well as the highjump. With these advantages at hand, it was reasonable to conclude that the Beaver track team threatened maj or contenders in the Metro League. Heather Mann came from Mount Lambier, Australia, Else Gutierrez from La Paz, Bolivia, Goa Gestsdottir from Reykjavik, Iceland, and Anna Hirata from Tokyo, japan. Heatheris visit extended over parts of two academic years at Ballard. Since the seasons, and therefore the school years, are opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, she was able to finish a year of school here and return to her home in Australia in time for Christmas. Else and Anna were in the enviable position of having graduated from their respective home schools before coming to Ballard. Thus they were relieved of some of the Senior year pressures of meeting graduation requirements. Goa, on the other hand, will be finishing two more years of high school after her return to Iceland. As last year, the vest was extremely popular-but its appearance was changed: both the knit and material vests dropped in length so that many could be worn alone as mini dresses. Pants became accepted more and more in Ballard girls' wardrobes, the style was mostly flared or wide legged. Shoes were similar to last yearls - big and chunky with high heels and rounded or squared toes. Dark and colored nylons became a common accessory along with scarves and chain necklaces. The boys were wearing clothes similar to last yearls Cslacks, jeans, shirts, and sweatersb but each took on a new and different appearance: slacks were flared, jeans had that uworn look, shirts were in deep dark colors, and sweaters were buttoned at the top with collars. Vests, suits, and ties were seen frequently, too. Styles seen at Ballard are modeled by Pam Bainbridge, Bev Monson, and Margaret Eilertsen, Popular coats are worn by Paul Nerdrum and Randi Starup. The many fine runs offered by the ski resorts, located in our beautiful Cascades, provided a winter of fun and excitement. One could hardly go up skiing and not run into a classmate from Ballard, and on Monday mornings, many persons were to be seen in the halls with suntanned faces after a robust weekend of skiing. Those who wanted to improve their form took PTSA sponsored ski lessons. The eight instruction sessions started January 4, and met every other Sunday at Ski Acres until April 5. Ski busses left Ballard at 7:30 in the morning and returned at 5:30 that afternoon. Ballard had an abundance of skiing talent. Many members of the junior and senior classes were actively involved with the instruction of new skiers and some were members ofthe Ski Patrol. The Ski Patrol's main concern andjob was getting injured skiers off the hill. They were well-trained for this task as it was required for all members to take a first aid course. ln return for their services, Ski Patrols were given free lifts and tows. Sophomore Class The class of ,72 plunged headlong into the first week at their new school with special assemblies given to acquaint them with Ballard's activities, traditions, and spirit. The assemblies were planned to make the sophomores feel at home and become active members of the student body. Their enthusiasm was put to the test at games and during competition yells, but the sophomores showed that they would give the ,juniors and seniors a challenge. There was also a large sophomore turnout at Ballardis first Walk-a-thon which helped our activity fund greatly. One of the most successful activities was a dance held in November. Entertainment was provided by the Fresh Peach and expressed through the theme of HKaleidoscope', the sophomore's involvement in the modern trends. The sophomores gave generous donations during our annual canned food drive, once again showing their interest in our various all-school activities. The sophomoreis involvement in school activities seemed to indicate that a majority of the class had an enjoyable and worthwhile first year at Ballard. Junior Class Following a vigorous election campaign the class of 571 began it's year full of activities by sponsoring the Homecoming Dance with the Fragile Lime furnishing entertainment. As the Christmas season approached, the annual Canned Food Drive and hall decorating were other events that found thekjuniors participating with obvious enthusiasm. Tremendous spirit was shown during the selling of activity cards when they topped the other classes in sales percentage, The -juniors' energy and endurance was put to the test during the first annual Walk-a-thon, when they gave support to another one of Ballard's fund-raising functions. The highlight of the year was the Junior Reception. It turned out to be an enlightening evening for parents and teachers alike, through informal conversation. Entertainment for the evening was provided by the Ballard Stage Band whose performance was enthusiastically received. Finally, as the school year was nearing a close, the .juniors anticipated the Moving-Up Assembly where they would take the new position of upperclassmen with eagerness. The Seniors sponsored the year's first dance, Cheap Thrills. Music was played by the Steam, and it made the dance a highlight of the year. In October, the Senior Reception was a very successful one, with music provided by the Ballard Chorale. Those attending were helped to gain a better understanding of school activities, through talks presented by the officers of school clubs and organizations. The excitement and spirit of the Christmas season was heightened during the seniors, annual sponsoring of Ballard's Christmas Ball. The theme this year was Moonlight and Mistletoe , featuring the Brassworks Company Band for entertainment. This year the March of Dimes competition was done with a different twist. To inspire more competition between classes, a coin tossu was held during the half-time of the basketball game, and the senior's filled their bucket the fastest ,and the fullest. Throughout the year the seniors, numerous activities, such as the sponsoring of White Day, the Football Homecoming Assembly, a booth at the Snoose Junction Function, and Ballard Faculty Day, added up to the main highlights of the year. Senior Bike Day and the Senior Trip to Sunset Lodge were 'Lstrictly senior,' activities, being an important and memorable part of their last year at Ballard. Probably the biggest school event for the seniors was the Senior Prom, On the Threshhold of a Dreamf, held in the Spanish Ballroom ofthe Olympic Hotel. The final event of the senior,s year was the moving-up assembly on their last day of school. This ceremony Nofficiallyl' recognized the seniors as ugraduates of Ballard. Commencement, which is usually looked upon with anticipation, as well as with some nostalgia, sent the seniors out of Ballard and off to a new beginning.
