Friend whose great love for the traditions and aspirations ol: Baker University is matched only by our love For him. 6 CCDNTENTS Delineation lnspiration Federation Participation Association 0 BAKER UNIVERSITY HYMN Whene'er we come into the halls, To learningls purpose set apart, Be Thou from Whom all knowledge falls Be Thou in every mind and heart. In vain We read the sage's Word In vain to us the poet's song, If We in these have never heard The Voice that breathes the lines along. What is all science but a stair On which We climb, O Lord to Thee! And all our art a mirror fair, Within, thy gracious form to see! O come, who art our need supreme, That all our learning be not vain, Reveal Thyself, the only theme That merits human toil and pain. -Ida .fl lzlborn U'c'f'l.'s W D EUNEATIGN EE! This year the organization has presented evening programs in the following Methodist Episcopal churches: Rosedale, Kansas City, Kansas, London Heights, Kansas City, Kansas, Trinity, Kansas City, Missouri, Yvashington Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas, First, Olathe, Kansas, and I.owman Memorial, To- peka, Kansas. The climax of the group's work was the presentation on Palm Sunday of the sacred cantata, The Seven Last Tfordx of fllirixi, by Dubois. Ethel Marie Allee. soprano, Prof. Karl Bratton, tenor, and Rex Smith, baritone, were soloists, Leland Zimmerman, first violin, Betty .Io Ebrigllt, second violin, Prof. Gordon Kinney, cello, and Prof. Irving Bartley, pianist, wcre the accumpanists, with Dean Leaven- good conducting. The University choir has taken the place in college activities formerly held by the Meu's Glee Club, the VVomen's Glee Club, and the Choral Union. The glee clubs, trained hy members of the School of Music faculty, presented programs in connection with the publicity program of the college. The Choral Union. an organization of mixed voices, presented cantatas, operettas, and oratorios, usually as a part of the an- nual spring music festival. lVhen a inorc prominent place was given to the ehoir all three of these organi- zations were discontinued. In recent years the mem- bership of thc choir has been restricted to university students and eollege credit has been given to members. This group, with President Fleming and Jeraldine Johnson, reader, has advertised Baker in high school assemblies throughout Kansas and Missouri. The members of the quartet are James Russell, Roland Rogers, Robert Mize, Eugene Farrow, and Irene Sterling, accompanist. Accompanying the University Choir on all its trips and presenting chamber music at the Sunday afternoon vespers has been the work of the String Quartet. The group is composed of Prof. Luther Leavengood, first violing Leland Zimmer- man, second violin, Lucile Kramer, cellog and Betty Jo Ebright, viola. The VVomen's Quartet preparedl an interesting repertoire and appeared in a number of local programs. The personnel of the quartet is Ethel Marie Allee, Jeanne VVo0druff, Maude Griggs, Helen Smith, and Merle Fischer, accompanist. Though many musical organizations have been ac- tive at Baker the quartets have always been outstand- ing features of the Fine Arts department. No Baker organization is better known than the Men's Quar- tet, In fact, quartets of former years have, in several instances, retained their membership over a period of years, appearing in various programs after their grad- uation. Competition for membership in the quartets has always been keen. The string quartet is a newer organization which has been accepted gladly by lovers of formal instrumental music. ..G.L.. The presentation was both entertaining and dramatically successful. The Orange men tied for second place with Haskell Institute in the triangular meet, with Emporia Teachers College winning first place. Baker again tied for second place in the quadrangular meet. The Haskell Braves defeated Baker by a slight margin in the dual meet, with Baker almost doubling the score to de- feat Ottawa in the dual, meet at that school, The climax of the year came when Baker won the conference title for thc fifth consecutive year. nu, L, rafrath Cnmiiugham Carwell At the beginning of the 1933 season, the teamq did not fare so well as the team of 1932, partially because of the fact that the team was not so large as usual and also because of the toll taken by illness and injury. Baker, in closely contested meets, lost to VVashburn and Ottawa and placed last in thc triangu- lar and quadrangular meets. The strength of the team gradually increas- ed, and contrary to all dope, Baker wnn the conference meet, by a margin of fif- teen points. The scores for the meet were as follows: Baker, 59g Ottawa, 11-443 Kansas 'Wesleyan, 375 McPherson, 16' Bethany, 7. s To Coach Bretnall, a former Olympic- star. goes much of the credit for the many successful seasons of the Baker track team. The mcctinggs are held twice each month with special pro- grams. Each lnembcr is given an opportunity to share in the planning of these meetings, either as lcaclcr or as participant in thc program. Various topics WVlli0ll cl:-al with the science of home management ami which are not a part of regular class work are the subjects of the programs. One of the most interesting meetings of this year was a party given for the very youngest set in Baldwin,-the pre-school children. The last meeting of the year is a steak fry. The instructor in thc rlepartment, Miss Mary Anna Lawrence, is the sponsor of this club and has assisted the students in their planning' and Carry- ing out of its attractive programs. The Home Economies Club was organized at Baker University in 19223 under thc supervision of Professor Grace Stevenson, as the scronrl college home een- nomies club in Kansas. It was at first an honor club, but this plan was abandoned as impractical in Baker. and the! club now includes all home economics stu- clents. In 1925 thc Baker eluli became affiliated with state and national assoeiations. Delegates have been sent three times to the national conventions. hIary Turner went to Asheville. North Carolinag I,illiL-fred Youkev went to llostong and Mildred Martin went to Des ltfoines, Iowa. Stvlc shows and a laec exhibit have been included in thc proiects carried on by the elnb under the supervision of Bliss Lawrence. to whose efforts thc Home llconomics Club owcs its develop- ment. -' 120- T.
