The building will house chapel ser- vices, theater produc- tions and communica- tion facilities. Fundings for the project were made possible through the 21st Century Fund drive. Bottom: Artist's drawing of the new building. tllUH i For years students have enjoyed the Knotty Niche. Graffitti had covered the wood of the booths and walls for years. But all of that has changed now. The Knotty Niche was ripped apart and re- decorated this past fall. It now has light blue booths and a warm atmosphere. It was also renamed The Niche. After the redecoration more students make use of the Niche. Top photos: The old Knot- ty Niche. Right: Tricia Noha and Mike Lotti enjoy the new Niche. Grandslam ho- meruns by Kent Hrbek and Dan Gladden fueled the fire for the Twins series. Homer Hankies and series tickets were hot items. Names like Bruno. G- Man, Herbie and Kirby Puckett became household names. Augsburg has a special connection with the Twins. Athletic trainer Doug Nelson is also an assistant trainer for the Twins and had a part in the making of the dream. Top to bottom: A Twins home victory, the first game in the Detroit series M-8 D-5, center fielder Kirby Puckett, American League Championship se- ries MVP Gary Gaetti, and Homer Hanky Mania. Top to bottom: Quarterback Tommy Kramer had a rough season, Chris Dole- man (56) and Neal Guggemos (41) had a great season, summer practice at Mankato, linebacker Scott Studwell, and fans eagerly watch- ing practice. One phrase could sum up the Vikings season — the Quarter- back Shuffle. Tommy Kramer and Wade Wilson shared the Quarterback position. The players went on strike for three weeks and the replacement “scab team lost all three games. Through a strange twist, the Vikings entered post-season play as an NFC wild card team. They soundly defeated the Saints and the 49'ers in surprise victories. But their season ended one game short of the Superbowl with a loss to the Redskins. Overall, the Vikings proved that hard work and determination can lead you to many places. . . . Dreams 7 Building . . . Stock had donated nearly $500,000, the largest one time donation, to Augsburg for the new worship drama com- munications building. Augs- burg had planned to name a wing of the building after Stock, but the board of regents have decided otherwise. In the News Augsburg Responds Augsburg held two press con- ferences in February to reply to the Stock situation. President Anderson explained that Elroy Stock's position on racial puri- ty is based on Stock's the- ological beliefs. Anderson said to the press that Stock's ac- tions have angered and sad- dened hundreds of individuals and families and that the wing will not be named after him. But, the school will keep the contribution. This action provoked many letters to the editors in the Echo. Elroy Stock, second on left, at ground breaking for the new building. Pres. He recently donated a half a million dollars to build a new wing on the school, but in the days since Stock was linked to the letters, a college board deci- sion to keep the money has sparked a campus controversy. Some of President Charles An- derson's comments at the Feb. 16 news con- ference were televised by CBS as well.
