The student began at the bottom. In the University, he belonged to the low- est rank in the vast hierarchy. As he made the long, lonely march up to the third floor of Blodgett, he often felt like an ant squashed under the heel of the upper administration. But his plight did not go unnoticed. There were those whose job it was to look down on him, care for him and guide him as he wandered through the seemingly endless maze of his education. Where the ivy cluttered around the Levermore windows, these people met in secret conference and decided his fate. But they did not make him a pawn on a chessboard, only a number in an IBM machine. 59
