At this time the first high school work was established in one room of what is now known as the Main Street Building, under' the direction of John li, Kocher, the present editor of the Connoquenessng Valley News. The first year of high school work was deemed satisfactory and encouraging by the school board and the north wing was added to the Main Street Building. Each year high school work was added until three years work had been es- tablished. ln the spring of 1899 the first class of seven was graduated. As time went on and it was made necessary to provide more room for the growing School and outside rooms were rented. Among those who served as principals during' this period are john li. Kocher to whom much credit is due for his work in establishing and directing the first six years of the. High School in Zelienople, Emory D. Baker taught from 1902-1903 g, XV. B. Snyder l9O3-19043 M. Miller, 1904-l905g Frank XY. lYright, 1905-19085 Frank A. Mcfilung, 1908-911g F. P. Miller, l9ll-l9l2. ln the year l9l2 the growing school demanded the erection of the four rooms on South High Street which until recently constituted the High School Building. The first principal to supervise the work in the new build- ing' was Lane M. rl'imlin, the present cashier in the First National Bank, Z U ZELIE-ANN ,Y - 4 ,gi ,,.,,...i-.,,.. i. -. .V+ , f, 4 ...,,Qb who taught until the year 1914. At this time the fourth year of high school work was added. ln the year 1919 john T. Connel became principal of the school but because of his election to the office of county superintendent of schools, he could not complete the term. T. liarl liolliver took up the work this time and acted as principal until 1921 when E. lf. M. Patton became principal and taught until 1924. ln 1921 the overcrowded condition of the schools demanded that more room of some kind be provided. .Ns the way was not open financially to do permanent building the so called portable rooms were resorted to and four such rooms were acquired in a few years. Three of these rooms are being usefl at present' for the seventh and eight grades while thc fourth which was userl until recently by the High School, was allotted to the XYoman's Com- munity Club for the use of the Zelienople Public Library. .Xliout fifteen months ago steps were taken looking to the erection of permament accommodations. Following the approval of a bond issue of 360,000 at the November election, bids were taken for a proposed addition with school rooms, offices, auditorium-gymnasium, basement kitchen and diningroom, showers, heating plant and so forth. The bids revealed that the proceeds of the bond issue would be insufficient for the purpose desired. Again the voters were consulted and at a special election held the' 14th of last April a bond issue of 385.000 was approved. At once work was commenced. and on January 22, 1926 the building was formally set aside for the general purposes for which it was erected. The present building includes eight class rooms, six of which are being used as classrooms and a seventh which is being used as a physics laboratory, an auditorium-gymnasium with a seating capacity of 800, basement kitchen and dining room, which at present is being equipped by donations, heating plant, offices, supply rooms, showers and dressing rooms. By this sketch it may be seen that the Zelienople High Schools has grown and is still growing. The school which consists at the present of an enrollment of 170, has been under the supervision of D. R. Bartoo sincd 1925. ln 1925 the largest graduating class of 31 members, was graduated, while the class of '26 consists of only 20 members. lt is hoped that in the remainder of this book the reader may have a more intimate glimpse into the various activities of the present Zelienople High School. M a- ,,- .,-e,- ...-,, , p, f History of The Class of 1926 Four long -years ago on September 6, 1922 we, the class of l926, en- tered Zelie-Hi and soon became a well known class there. This was due to our decided 'tgreennessf' a characteristic posessed by all Freshies but not in so decided a degree. Wie were completely 'fboiledh by the cool and un- sympathizing gaze of the Seniors and the Juniors, being compelled to sit in the same FOOH1 with them. At last we were permitted to hold a class meeting, at which Louis Lusk was elected president. The next great event in our school lives was a sleighing party held january 25th. Wlel met at the Public School Building on Main Street, everybody piled into the sled and made the air ring with music and laughter. We drove to the home of Mae VVelsh where a hot sup- per awaited us and the table fairly groaned under the Weight of the good eats.,' After spending a jolly Evening' a sleepy but happy gang entered Zelie as the clock struck three. This ended our parties for the year. The remaining weeks were spent in laborious work and on June first came the end of our childhood. Wie returned in the fall and took possession of the sophomore room. Wie had ceased to tremble and quake and gave way to our pranks and tricks which we had stored up during the year. Mr. Patton remained Principal of Z. H. S. but there was a change in the faculty, Miss Eichholtz succeeded Miss Moore. The first class party of the year was held in December, when we had a skating party on the reservoir under the chaperonage of Mr. Patton. Later we had a sled-load at the home of Catherine Bame. The evening was spent in games and after enjoying a delicious lunch we re- turned home voting Catherine a capital hostess. A weiner roast was held at the home of Jeannette Stamm on May 19th. june third completed one- half of our high school career and ended, too the year of our existence as 'fwise fools. The junior class of 1924 assembled in Miss McClure's room. This Year we elected Frank Eichholtz president, selected as our motto BU Square and the class colors, pink and silver. This year Mr. Bartoo was elected as principal of the high school and one new teacher was added to the faculty, Miss Marshall, who resigned in December and Miss Ralston was elected to fill the vacancy. The class began its social life by holding a party at the home of Catherine Bame. A nice time was enjoyed by all. Next came the moving picture Classmates.U After the battle was fought and won we decided to give the ,Iunior-Senior prom. It was given at the Kaufman hotel on May 13th. The hall was decorated in the class colors of the Seniors, black and red. During the serving of the banquet the class president, Frank Eichholtz acted as toastniaster. The last party of the year u as a weiner roast at the home of Velma Young. Last but not least came our Senior year. The first social event was the 'flnitiation of the Freshiesf' There was also a change in the faculty Mrs. Black and Mr. Anderson came to fill vacancies. A party was held at the home of Charles Klinefelter October twenty first. A pleasant time was spent in playing games and dancing. On Uctober twenty sixth a dance was given by the foot--ball players to celebrate the victory over Evans Citv. The Seniors thcn gave a Hallow'een party to the Sophomores, XYhen the 13 Z li I .l li-:X N N 49--of- +e-ff ff---Y --fev- snow began to fall the spirit of 1926 began to rise. Wie finally decided to have a sled-load. Wle believe in quality rather than quantity having developed some distinguished scholars. When the class oi l9Z6 has passed the floor ot Z. H. Si. it will no doubt give to the world many renowned persons. lt has produced a poet ot no mean abilityg a pianist who will rise to fameg an athlete who will make a name for himself among the great athletes: and an author xvho is already dstinguished in Z. H. S. lt contains a Latin dictionary, a walking encyclo- pedia and many other persons ot note. ln summing up the class of 1926 one may ask. XVhy is the class of l926 superior?,' How numerous are the answers that clamor for expression on this question. Vie could write volumes and volumes on the subject and then treat it only in-a profound manner, Our modesty and naturally retiring dis- position. however prevents us from saying more, a fact which might be re- garded as self praise. H lt is with regret that we realize our departure from Z. H. S. is so near. It has been a pleasure to spend tour years in this institution and We will never have quite such good times as we have had here. Yve are sorry to leave Z. H. As I came up the walk by the Lutheran Church, I heard singing and mumbling. I though to myself, I guess I will see what's going on. So I went right in and took a front seat as it was the only one that was empty. To my' surprise, VVho was the preacher? XVhy. no one else but Lawrence Allen. Th:- choir was composed of Mabel Alben singing alto, Qrrin Horton, singing bass. accompained by Roy Fulton's fiddle. As I arrived a little late everyone turned and looked. The preacher waited a few minutes, then he began, Cputting on his spectacles 'firstj XVell my subject today will be on evolution. The sermon got so interesting that when it was over, I thought Barney sure did go cuckoo on that subject. After he pronounced the benediction I got up when I was at once addressed by an old lady with about a half dozen children. I certainly gazed, I coulcIn't imagine who this was. At once she began to tall: of the good old days at Z. S. It was then I discovered who it was, why no one else but Anna 7Iane Kirker or, I mean, Mrs. Nesbitt. She said, Poor Ray was working on the Railroad trying to make a livingf, I walked back the isle with Mrs. Allen, formerly Anne Scott. She invited me to go home with her. By this time everyone was ont. lxl'e came up to what used to be Main Street, cops were standing here and there, at one corner a band was play- ing, people were walking in all directions. and machines were going to and fro. At last we arrived at our! destination 552 Ifairmont Ave. After we had a little lunch we sat and chatted My! the things I learned. A knock came to the door and when it was answered it was found to be a little red-headed boy with dirty clothes. I said to Anne, XYho is that boy? XVhy, she said, that's Hubert BIeyer's little boyfl You know he married a homely little red-haired girl from Harmony junction. You know he was always so particular but I don't know why he married this one. The boy brought an announcement of the wedding of Hazel Klinefelter and Vl'illiam Goehring who had fallen in love at last and were to be married on Xlvednesday. Barney or 'tlievf' as I shall call him, went upstairs to study the ceremony. Anna and I retired. NYhen I woke the next morning, the day before the wedding I was greeted by a delicious odor from the kitchen. Anna was busy in the kitchen making' waffles. My! I never had such a good breakfast in 1ny life, and the wav Barney ate-why! it was awful. He certainly got a good cook. After the dishes were finished Anne and I thought we would go down street. XYe had walked two blocks before we got a car. As we were going along we were attracted by the music of an organgrinder and who do you suppose this was? why it was Hobby Eichholtz. Wie always though he was sort of a mon- key at school. IYe walked on down to the next block and I was attracted by a sign Beauty I'arlor --Illartha Ilhillis. Xlve were at the end of the second block and we got our car for town. Ivhen we got off we went into a big depart- ment store. After we did our shopping we went home, Bly! but we 'w ere tired. Rev. made us go straight to bed. The next morning when I awoke I heard some one say, VVilI you take this maiden to be thy truly wedded wife ?'l I jumped up and I then knew that it was the Rev. going over the ceremony. I dressed quickly and went downstairs. I found that I was last up, that Anne and Rev. had eaten Anne was all excited over the wedding, She told me I would see a good many of the rest of the class. I dressed! 22 ZELIE-ANN M--f - -A quickly and in about a half hour we were off to the wedding. VVhen we ar- rived we were a little early and not many were there. As we entered the door we were greeted by the butler. jimmie Bloom, My! but he did look handsome in that suit. A maid was called and it was found to be YVanda Douthett. NYe then went into a large room which could seat about thirty. It was then only a few minutes before the ceremony. Bill, the groom, was waitingly patiently for Hazel who was upstairs worrying about her trosseau. Seated at the piano was Betty Billiter, to play the wedding march At last Hazel appeared arrayed in all her splendor. The bridesmaid was found to be Esther Burkett and the best man George Bessor. After the ceremony which was very exciting a solo was sung by Dorothy Ling. XYe then went into another large room where a wedding dinner was awaiting us. The room was decorated in pink and white. Seated at the table with the bride and groom and bridesmaid and best man were Mr. and Mrs. Milton Burrel, Mrs. Burrel formerly jane Rogner, Mr. and Mrs. Frank I.uek, Mrs. Luek formerly Mae Lutz. Several others I knew were listher Kugel, Viola Goehring and Esther Danver, who were still old maids. I also learned that Gladys Frishkorn had become a wonderful dancer on the Harmony Junction Dance Floor, and that Dot jones, still single, was keeping company with john Dindinger, an old bachelor. I became so excited about all these that I almost forgot my table manners. After the wedding, everyone parted leaving many congratulations for the bride and groom. As 'soon as Rev. was ready we left' for their home. W'hen we returned to the house I told my host and hostess that my time had come to leave. Lawrence took me to the station in his machine. On arriving at the depot I found my train was due. After bidding my friends farewell I boarded the train. In front of me was a middle aged woman with three children. She and the children were all chewing gum as fast as their jaws could go. I thought I ought to know her. VVhen I saw her face witli about a box of rouge on, I at once recognized her as Mildred Talboo., I went up to her. She was certainly surprised. She began talking of the good time at Z. H. S., when she used to chew gum in Mrs. Hartung's room. By this time the conductor came up to me. As I was hunting my tickets l noticed he was looking at me in an odd way. I looked at him again and again, as sure as your living it was Harold Smith. I told him I was bound for New York. Mildred and I were enjoying a conversation when in walked a lady with several baskets of eggs, it was Anna Teets of course. She said that she was running a poultry yard and was delivering her products to the Frank l.uek 8: Son Meat Market. She informed me that her sister lilva was now Henry Ford jrfs secretary and that Pearl Scbweinegruber and Ruth Pflug were the happy wives of two farmers. XYhen I arrived at the end of my destination. the depot was very crowded and I was jolted about in every direction. l heard some sone say, Taxi, Miss? XVhen he came to take my baggage I looked at him and he looked at me and said, Are you an old schoolmate of mine V, Sure enough it was Russell Schidemantle. He told me that his friend Lester Iibert and 'lean XYatkins were running one of the biggest confectionery stores on Broadway. He said that Fredrick Klimack was conferring with some of the most noted scientists and trying to solve some of the greatest problems of the day, at last I arrived at my ,Aunt's on 4552 Brighton Ave., New York, where I will stay and in about a week set up a Music Studio. l will now leave my Z. His- tory cannot be made in a day, and ours is no exception. Our class was con- sidered one of the best in the grades, since so many were willing to study and were desirous of receiving a thorough education. The class now consists of a few who have attended schools in other communities, while others have always been with us. During our last year in the grade schools, we were given an idea as to what High School life would be, and the group as a whole was very glad to enter. Several however, thought it was time to quit school, and they left us. Vvhen we entered the Zelienople High School, we were one of the largest classes. Our history as a real class in high school began on September 2, 1924 as Freshman. Wie numbered sixty-five. Of this number thirty-five were girls and thirty-two boys. Fifteen had been with the class since l9l6, when we entered the primary grade. Lessons were assigned the first day, and it took many hours of labor for their preparation On September 24 the class elected class officers and selected the colors, the flower. and the motto. Our officers are President, Martin Neuhausen, Vice l'resi:le11t. -Vlohn Rape. Secretary. Robert lierkey, Treasurer, Bertha Rape. Our colors are blue and white: the class flower sweet pea: the motto, Mft gaineth strength as it goes. The first social event was a weiner roast given by the Seniors with the Freshman as guests. This was the night of our initation, and it was enjoyed by every one present. Later the class held a weiner roast in the wood's by the Urphans Home. On February l8th we gave a Valentine party at Hotel Kaufman. The school term soon came to an end. Examinations were passed with high grades and we left Z. H. S. with one-fourth of our happy high school days gone by. On the eighth of September 1925, we again assembled, but this time as Sophomores. Our class had decreased somewhat as some quit school and others attended different schools. Many hardships were awaiting us, but we undertook the struggle bravely. The first social event of this year was a party given by the upper class- man in honor of the Freshman who took their vows, the fulfillment of which the other classes enforced. l.ate in October a Halloween Party was given by the Seniors. The Sophoinores were invited as guests. VVC enjoyed a sled load later in the year when we went to the home of one of our classmates. About the middle of the term we were very sorry to have our instructor. Mr. Barron leave us He had been called to engage in anothen line of workg but he left with us many ideas and principles that are worth while. VVe trust that in years to come we will continue to appreciate what he has taught us. 2 Several of the boys of our class played on the Varsity Football and Baskt Ball teams. One member belongs to the High School Urchestra, and four of the girls are members of the Cilee Club. Our achievinents are not con- fined to such activities, however, for a number of our class have won places on the Honor Roll for scholarship. Wie are striving to live up to our motto, and hope that we may still gain more strength in the remaining years of our High School career. 27 Zlil.lE-ANN Nowf' said llliss Ralston in P. U. D. H. S. Nineteen players reported for practice the first afternoon and later this number was increased to twenty-four. The success of the team this season, can be attributed in part. to the great co-operation of its members and coach Barron, to the school spirit which was brought about by the Athletic Associationg and to the great in- terest shown by the people of the town towards the team. A brief sketch of what the team has accomplished this year, is summed up by the manager of the team, Lawrence Allen, in his, A VIEVV FROM THE SIDELINEW The Zyelienople High School Boys opened their foot ball season avi ay from home, iat New Bethlehem and came home with a crowning victory. having a,score of 45-O. This compared to the season was only a trifle to start with. 4 The second game was played at Zelienople and the team showed the town people that they meant business by defeating Union High School of New Castle by a score of 50-O. Then came the game with the great enemy in athletics, Evans City. They walked on to the field aff Zgzlienople with the idea that Z. H. S. would be easy fish, but before the game was over they found they could not pick the bones out of their fish, and Zelie scored another victory of 26'O. On the sevenreeth day of October the gridiron xx ent to Harrisville. As they journeyed on determination sparkled in their eyes, and when. the whistle blew for the last time, Zelienople marched off the field with a score of 46-3, and thus came home with more laurels on their shoulders. Then came the greatest game of the season. The boys were to oppose the undefeated Midland team of Beaver Valley, which out-sized Zelienople's team twenty pounds to the man. The field was a sea of mud and the ad- vantage of course was on the side of the opponents: but even at this the old Zelie fiirdiron held them to a tie score of 6-o, and the opinion of the people was that Zelie would have beaten them on a dry field. there'fore this should be considerd a victory. The next game was played at home and the same old warriors combated with the New Vvilmington team, who also had not met with defeat until this time, when the gridiron walked away with a score of 20-O. On November seventh the Dayton team appeared on the field in high spirits: they had defeated Zelienople previously by a score of 12-9. But this year, by the end of the first half, they not only learned that they were out- played but outclassed and the game ended in another victory 32-0. An then came the last game of the season and still undefeated, on the eleventh day of November Zelie went to liast Brady and succeeded in keep- ing up the good record and walked off the field with a score oli 42-2. XVhen the team finished up they had the highest score in Pennsylvania amounting to 265, Harrisburgh Tech ranked second with a score of 253. .,3 ZELIE-ANN to iw ---- - if - -4 - 727- V- -V ir - Zelienople finished up undefeated and as l said with a score of 265 while their opponents summed a score of eleven points. This has been the greatest season Zelinople has ever known and it was mostly due to the faithful coach XV. li. Barron, and the great perseverence of the players. ZICLIE-ANN l A A W- -..YY , , 9 MR. BARRON Mr. Barron has been a faithful teachtr and coach at Z. H. S. for the past four and a half years. He was the originator of, Athletics at this school and will long' be remembered for his energy spent in doing so. Mr. Barron once made this statement, It takes time to build a foot-ball team, and some day we will be able to hold our own with any team in our class. NVC, think here at Z. H. S., he has made that statement come true, judging from the re- cord his team has made this year. just as things were beginning to go along nicely and we had a new school building to work in and be proud of, we were informed that Mr. Barron was leaving at the end of the first semester. Every one was sorry he had to go, but he was taking a step from good' to better, and we hope he soon advances to the best. OUR MANAGER To our manager, Lawerence Allen, who has managed the foot-ball team for two years, and has already started his schedule for the next season, is due great credit. Barney is the best manager that Z. H. S. has ever had. Since Mr. Barron left the school. bulk of the work has fallen to Mr. Burnett, athletic supervisor of the School Board, and Barney. We wish our little manager all the success in the world for carrying out of his plans for the next season. BANQUET The annual Foot-Ball banquet was held in connection with a farewell party to XYillia1n E. Barron on january 25, 1926. Mr. Barron being a teacher and the athletic instructor of Z. H. S. This banquet was held under the auspices of the Board of liducation, Rotary Club and the High School Athletic Association. The speakers of the evening were Klr. A. R. Burnett, Mr. H. A. Hallstein, Mr. E. V. Young, Mr.j AV. Moorehead, Mr. D. R. Bartoo, Mr. MacMillan of Geneva College, Mr. NY E. Barron and Louis Lusk, captain of the Foot-ball Team. Louis in behalf of the foot-ball team, presented their coach XY. E. Barron, with a large silver foot-ball as 3 token of the teams regard for him. The guests of the evening were the foot-ball players, their girl friends. members of the Board of lfducation and members of the faculty. After the banquet a dance was held in the High School Auditorium, music being fur- nished by an lillwood Orchestra. To show the interest which Mr. and Mrs. Rape had in the foot-ball team and to help the team glory in their victories, a splendid banquet was prepared at their home. january 18, 1926. A fine time was enjoyed by all. The speakers of the evening were Mr. A. R. Burnett. Mr. llartoo, Mr. XY. li. Barron and Louis Lusk. 37 H ZELIE-ANN s as as s 9 Basket Ball Due to the fact that we have a new auditorium and gymnasium, Basket Bali has again been resumed, as one of the most important sports of the school. This year Z. H. S. has Z1 splendid team, considering the fact that the team has not been able to use the gymnasium until after the first of January 1926. the lack of practice, which was caused by not having a gymnasium for the past two years, and inefficient coaching due to the changing of coaches so often. In the near future Z. H. S. will have basket ball teams, which will be able to compete with all High School Teams in XYestern Pennsylvania, if Mr. Burnett has anything to do with it. He says, 'ATO have a basket ball team we must start them from the bottom up and make them. Through' this man's influence every grade from the fifth up has a scheduled time for both boys and girls basket ball practice and the results are beginning to show, The teams success this year can be attributed to the wonderful start it had under the fine coaching of Mr. Barron, and to the excellent playing of the two Nesbitt brothers. Up to the present time the team has played nineteen games winning twelve of them. The scores for the teams are as follows: Z. H. S. ....... .,,.,,...,,.. A series of inter-class games has been played by both the girls and boys' basket ball teams, interest in these games has been stimulated by the cups 'presented by two of the patrons. Mr, li. P. Young, the donor of the girls' cup, was formerly president of the .Board of Education and is always one of the boosters for Z. H. S. Mr. Burnett, the donor of the boys' cup is a member ofthe Board of Education and has always taken an active interest in the athletics of our high school. Both cups were won by the Junior Class teams, Note XVanted to stimulate an Alumni association, which can do some good for its Alma Mater by having an organized Alumni Foot-Ball and Bas- ket Ball team to play at least one game a year with the High School. ln so doing the I-ligh School can save expenses on one Foot Ball and one Basket' Ball game each year, which will amount to approximately 37500. The Z. H. S. Foot Ball team of 1925, sends a challenge to any Foot Ball team, which may be turned out in this school, to equal or better the record set this year.
