We operate five buses on a cost basis, which is pro-rated per student to each district. As the map portrays, these exe tend like the arc of a great circle to transport over two hundred high school students each day, which is over fifty percent of the total enrollment. With this influx of rural students we are able to offer a wider variety of subjects. As these students ride through the countryside they have the opportunity to observe the beauties of nature 'round about them, various farm prac- tices-such as strip-farming, cover- cropping, rotation of crops, use of dife ferent types of machinery are seen and discussed with their fellow travelers as they ride merrily along. Route planning, bus maintenance and bus drivers are under the supervision of Mark De longe, 'lilll Community Post Ofhce CONTENTS COMMUNITY SCENES SPONSOR DIRECTORY ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY SENIORS ACTIVITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS SCHOOL CURRICULUM MUSIC ATHLETICS 10 Page Page Page Page Page Page Page Page UNDERCLASSMEN .,..................... The bounding, back-board boys of Zeeland Htgh School under the erittcal and watchful eye of Coach Newell ended the 52-'53 basketball season with a total of ll victories and 5 defeats. l-leading the schedule, the first two opposing teams, Lee and Fremont, were handled in fine style, Zeeland coming out on top. The Chix were plunged to defeat by Coopersville in the third game of the season Putting to expert use former failings and using fast breaks and fine control, Sparta fell, Laid low next by the Chix on- slaught was Cedar Springs, which also shoved the Chix into ftrst place in the league with a 3 win, 1 loss record, Tallying two more victories over Comstock Park and Hudsonville allowed Zeeland to keep the league lead. A noneleague encounter with Lee was grabbed by Zee- land. Losing a thriller to an improved Fremont iive low- ered the Chix to second league rating. A train of im- pressive victories took Coopersville, Cedar Springs, and l-ludsonville, followed by a double defeat by Sparta and Comstock Park Conquering Hudsonville in the tournament, the Zee- land squad was faced by the powerful Holland Christian team, Although the Chix proved snappy opposition, the Maroons commanded the lead Leading the Chix through the season was stalwart Allen Kraai as both Captain and most valuable player. The '52-'53 season was concluded with Zeeland firmly intrenched in second place in the Ken-new-wa League. ...Mx QT'- 'lWhoops f- missed 'er againlu 90 Come on, Iim, move e tor a changel Coach Mel Bournas lunior Chix have given Zeeland basketball tans reason to believe that our hardwood prospects lor the next few years are very good. They established a record ot ten wins pitted against two losses in conference opposition and split a two-game series with Grand Rapids Lee. Team scoring was well-rounded, showing an even-bal- anced attack Art Klamt set the pace with 188 points, followed by Don Schout, Eugene De longe, and Dave Tyznlc with 138 points, lll points, and ll5 points respec- tively. The squad on several occasions racked up sixty and seventy points per game, while holding down their opponents' scoring with a good zone or rnan-to-man defense. The Little Chix scored impressive wins over Coopers- ville Broncos, the present league champions, 5l-25 and 48-33. Stocky Eugene De longe, a flashy guard, was chosen captain of the squad and Don Schout, a tall forward, was elected most-valuable player by his team-mates. Coach Bouma. P.. Riemersma. I. Kant, M.
