Ninety-six forsaken, not knowing where to go, freshmen marched through that door to the first of their four memorial years spent within its walls. After a few weeks of ex- citement and exploration, they settled down to the business of obtaining them- selves an education. This class of 49 then celebrated the annual wearing of the green, and under the able leadership and guidance of Iohn Boeve as president and Miss Whit- nell as class sponsor, they soon over- came the difficulties which only a Fresh- men can realize. These Hdauntless Frosh not only ob- served a roller skating party but also gave an eventful beach party in honor of the class of 48 . This Sophomore year was passed in much the usual wayi The class sponsor- ship was taken over by Miss De longe. At the elections, lohn Boeve was again chosen president, and then the class passed on to the Freshmen the thrill of initiation. The major event of the year was a fun-filled tobogganing party at which 85 Sophs were present. The to- bogganing took place at the country club and refreshments were served at the Youth Center. As forty-niners, the class settled down to a busy Iunior year under the direction of a new president, Arlene Wal- ters. The lunior-Senior Banquet at the Spring Lake Country Club, given in honor of the seniors, climaxed the event of the year. With this annual, spring, social high-light we successfully ended our lunior year. All too quickly arose the Senior Class. The thrill of becoming an upper classman had somehow been left be- hind, ninety-six eager freshmen had been cultivated until only 67 determined Seniors remained. Shirley Heyboer, as class president, very ably held the reigns throughout the Senior year. With enthusiasm the forty-niners entered the annual magazine drive and sponsored numerous bake good sales to build up their treasury. Once again the class play, 'The Baby Sitter , under the direction of Mrs. lanssen, proved to be a great success. Then the edition of The Stepping Stone, the Iunior-Senior Ban- quet, the long anticipated boat trip to Chicago, Class Night , Baccalaureate, Commencement on Iune 8, 1949, moved them on toward their destination- graduation. This caravan of covered wagons has reached the crest of the hill-the future lies ahead. - B11 LORRAINE BEKINS Sfxf' hay ll :fluff Innlc, lm! funky arf' l1r'l'r'l1'1'1xg, Glee Club l Home Economics Club 2 Y-Teens 3, 4 Class Play 4 Commercral Club 4 Annual Staff 4 Athletlc Slsters 4 Bowlmg 4 Chorus 4 NORMA BEl.TlvlAN EL'.f'1' lfmughtvzrl, lglnrf, und' przfifrzlf' Home Economrcs Club 2, 4 Cwlee Club l MARCIA BERGHOHST I llufr1,ul'0l1,w l1nmnr. Queen J-llyhlife Sfeeilrall Season A hard-fighting line and a speedy back- field, headed by Coach Elzinga, was given its first encounter of the season when the Chix bumped up against a powerful and scrappy Cfrandville eleven which walked off the field with a 14-U win over the Chix. Having lost the first encounter, the boys met Fennville the next week with high hopes of beginning a winning streak. The Chix got off to a bad start and were on the short end of a 7-O score at the halftime. However, in the second half Zeeland began to click and the first touchdown was made on a pass from Baterink to Carlson. After this Zeeland scored twice more to put them out in front, l9-7 at the end of the game. Next, the Chix tangled with Wyoming Park in a slightly one-sided game. Wyoming scored twice in the opening period and once in the second, placing the Chix behind, l8-U. The following week the Chix squad took a beating from the rugged and scrappy Coop- ersville eleven which scored in the first quar- ter. Zeeland held their foes during the next half, but due to a blocked punt in the third quarter, Coopersville netted a touchdown. ln the last quarter a penalty on Zeeland brought the ball on the 3-yard line from where Coopersville made their last. The game ended with a score of 22-0. Before the Chix defeated Otsego, 20-14, on the home ground, there was a colorful dedi- cation of the new lights and the crowning of the first Football Queen. ln the game Zee- land featured a series of long runs and sev- eral passes. In the first quarter Raterink lugged the ball over for a 6-O score. ln the second Zeeland again scored on an inter- cepted pass on the 41-yard line which ended in a touchdown as a result of a pass from Baterink to Carlson. The conversion was good. Then Otsego retaliated. But in the last stanza, both teams shared in the scoring making it ZU-14. The next week Zeeland traveled to Paw Paw and romped over the Redskins, 137, After two hard-fought victories in the two previous games, the Chix played Allegan the following week and were defeated loy a strong Allegan squad, 36-6. On November 5, the Zeeland boys took their second league loss from Plainwell in a very thrilling game with a score of 19-13. Plainwell drew first blood, ln the second period Plainwell scored again, Then 8 plays after the kickoff, Zeeland scored and made good the conversion, Plainwell came back and pushed the ball over and also added the conversion. ln the last frame Zee- land scored its final touchdown to make the score at the end, 19-13. Thus ended another thrill-packed season for the Zeeland High School football team, Zeeland won 3 out of 9 games, two of them Q .. ex, NX W A K X fi I is A s. being league victories.
