For three days grass skirts and other atrocious decora- tions distinguished this class from the rest of the student body. Beach parties seemed to be popular during the first two years. This class gave one for the sophomores, and as many arrived home very late, some new rules concerning parties were made. The class also went skating and tobogganing and, of course, attended the yearly All-School Party. ln 1946 fun began. The arrival of class rings really put on the stamp of Hupperclass- men and from then on things happened. 'lFootloose, the class play, directed by Miss Ver Strate, was a dramatic success. Other schemes for making money were the Maga- zine Drive and the sales of ZHS pins. Four members of the class were chosen t b ' ' o e members of the National Honor Society. The biggest event of the year was the formal lunior-Senior banquet held at the Spring Lake Country Club, This was a fare- well for the Class of '47, H At last the final stages of knighthood were reached. This was the busiest and most ex- citing year of high school. Soon after select- ing na..ie cards and announcements, the class presented that hilarious production, Guess Again, and sold magazines to increase its treasury. Before Christmas vacation the staff was busy writing for the annual, and this went on until the first of May. Then came one of the big events of the year-the lunior-Senior banquet, The juniors were responsible for the banquet, and a royal entertainment it wasl Another big event was the senior boat trip aboard the Greater Detroit bound for Chi- cago via Milwaukee. On this journey many carefree students, without any examination worries, enjoyed the voyage to the utmost, On the evening of Tune Z, sixty-five seniors, in caps and gowns, marched down the aisle in a solemn procession to receive Bibles and diplomas. After the playing of taps the knights left the plain to climb the height, the world. ffm'-' ' ' L Y' ' .L-axihk.4..s....s.,,..Li..::.....x...-.J.'g.s , ROBERT BAKKER 1 ulrrrr arrlrmlg yuu, lun' Ju rrlllzlfnlyf' Eastern Academy, New Iersey 1, 2 lrlurrrcane High, West Vrrglnxa 3 Zeeland Hxgh 4 Baseball 4 SHIRLEY BELTMAN SIN In-pl ll,-f ,tum- GlTlS4 Glee Club 1, 2 Home Economlcs Club EDWARD BERGHORST .l man nf cmlhflltrrrz- puff! mmn'. Coach Tones and his dar- ing eleven waged a thrill-packed and successful season of battles for Zeeland High. The season opened with a victory for the Chix and Grandville with a score of l2-O. In this game De Weerdt drew first blood when he went over for the first score. The second touchdown was made when Raterink dashed 92 yards for the final score of the game. On September 25, under the lights at Godwin, the Chix were beaten by a powerful Wolverine team. With a superb aerial offense and a tricky backfield, Godwin proved too much for the Zeeland squad and came out on top of the score, 12-U. Our next game was played under the Holland arcs with a powerful Wyoming team. ln the first half, the Vikings scored on a long pass to lead, 6-U. ln the third quarter a much-inspired Chix team came back with a series of running plays climaxed by a plunge by De Weerdt for a touchdown. The attempt for the extra point failed and the score was tied 6-6, During the final period neither team scored and the game ended in a tie. A week later the Zeeland squad took a beating at the hands of a rugged Coopersville team. During the first period Coopersville ended a sustained sixty-five yard drive for a touchdown. The attempt for the conversion was successful and Coopersville came out the victors, l3-O. After battling deep in Zeelands terrif tory Otsego finally managed to score late in the second quarter. The kick for the extra point was good and Otsego led at half-time, 7-O. ln the second half Zeeland's men out' played Otsego both in running and passing. The Chix scored on a plunge made by De Weerdt. De Ionge kicked for the conversion The game ended in a 7-7 deadlock. Our next game was also a conference game. lt was played under the lights in Allegan. We were overpowered by a mighty, fighting Tiger team by the score of 37-19. Allegan outscored Zeeland in the first half, l9-6. The Chix's only tally came when Gord Raterink made a 65-yard run. ln the second half the game was fought more evenly. Allegan scored three times, and Zeeland scored twice, once by De longe and once by Bern Raterink, De longe converted for the extra point. On November 7, Zeeland traveled to Bangor. On a mud-soaked field neither team could play to the best of its ability. Consequently, the game was slow and the scoring was at a minimum. Early in the game Bangor drove some seventy yards for their first and only score. Late in the second quarter the Chix retaliated and scored their only touchdown on a plunge made by Sheridan. The all-important extra point was then booted by De longe and Zeeland led at the half, 743. Neither tearri scored during the second half, but the Chix were nearing paydirt as the final whistle blew. Zeeland ended a successful season by trouncing a hard-fighting Sparta team, l5'O, on November l2. The Chix scored their first touchdown in the second quarter on a short plunge by lack Sheridan. De longe added the extra point and Zeeland led at halftime, 7-U. The Chix second touchdown came on a pass interception by Bloemendaal who raced 20 yards for a score. Late in the final period Diekema caught a Spartan man be- hind his own goal line. The final score was, 15-U. Thus ended another thrill-packed season for the Zeeland l-ligh football team. Cocch Iones deserves credit for turning out a strong Chix eleven which lost three out of its eight games. The commencement exercises consisted of speeches by the salutatorian and valedictorian of the class, an address by the main speaker, pre- sentation of diplomas and Bibles, giving of gift to the High School, singing of Class Song, and play- ing of taps.
