Entering Zeeland High School in September, 1942, the Class of '46 then ll4 strong-roamed through the halls in awe and gazed wonder- ingly at their new surroundings. The Sophs seemed to be unusually demanding, but we took the green baby bottles and servant duties all in the stride of life and emerged smiling. After a climax of onion- eating, licorice-chewing, and milk lapping at the Freshman-Sophomore gym party, a peace pact was drawn up between the two classes and a firm alliance made. Mr. Raymond Brummel was desig- nated as class sponsor and with his valuable advice and Bill De Pree's capable presidential directing, our Freshman year was truly a success- ful one. Time marched on and the Class of '46 marched along with it. ln the fall of '43 a goodly portion of the Class returned for their second year of school life. As Sophomores, we were considered a lively, enthusi- astic, and fun-loving group but be- neath our desire- for mischief were traits of wisdom, ambition, and knowledge. Mr. Brummel did not re- turn as our sponsor, but his duties were successfully undertaken by Miss lane McCarty and, with Ken- neth Vander Kolk as our class presi- dent, we went over the top in bond drives and other school activities. When roll call was taken in the beginning of our lunior year, 86 members responded. lt was during this third year together that we bade farewell with regret and admiration to lay De Haan and Frederick Van- den Bosch as they left us to serve in the armed forces of our Country. lh The Iuniors elected Ronald Schip- per for the office of president and Miss McCarty continued her spcn- sorship duties. The presentation of The Mad Hatters proved to be a smash hit and financially aided by this pro- duction, plans were made for the Iunior-Senior Banquet which was held at the Bowe Hotel. Great was the entertainment and wonderful the food at this royal feast. The suc- cessful magazine campaign added more pennies to the Class treasury ln September, 1945, 81 Seniors proudly walked through Zeeland High's corridors. At last we were the high and mighty Seniors. Ken- neth Vander Kolk was again elected class presidentg Miss Iuanda Howard became co-sponsor with Miss Mc- Carty. This was the last year our sponsors would spend in Zeeland High, for them the chime of wedding bells was soon to ring. Great Caesor's Ghost was se- lected for our second class play and soon after this dramatic comedy had been staged, arrangements began to be made for this l4th edition of the Stepping Stone. We realized the greatness of the task and plunged into it enthusiastically for we wanted to preserve the pleasant memories of our last and eventful year. All too quickly the plans for Skip- Day, Class Night, the Senior Ban- quet, and Baccalaureate services were a reality. The long-awaited caps, gowns, and diplomas were soon in our possession. We had reached our goal-stone, the steps of the future remain.
