He carries upon his shoulders the responsibility of keeping the boilers running properly and smoothly. To him We say a hearty, llThanks. His chief job is to keep the school clean. Thanks from all of us. U s D n 1 v E R s The lous drivers provide transportation to and from school for the rural students. Entering Zeeland High School in September, 1942, the Class of '46 then ll4 strong-roamed through the halls in awe and gazed wonder- ingly at their new surroundings. The Sophs seemed to be unusually demanding, but we took the green baby bottles and servant duties all in the stride of life and emerged smiling. After a climax of onion- eating, licorice-chewing, and milk lapping at the Freshman-Sophomore gym party, a peace pact was drawn up between the two classes and a firm alliance made. Mr. Raymond Brummel was desig- nated as class sponsor and with his valuable advice and Bill De Pree's capable presidential directing, our Freshman year was truly a success- ful one. Time marched on and the Class of '46 marched along with it. ln the fall of '43 a goodly portion of the Class returned for their second year of school life. As Sophomores, we were considered a lively, enthusi- astic, and fun-loving group but be- neath our desire- for mischief were traits of wisdom, ambition, and knowledge. Mr. Brummel did not re- turn as our sponsor, but his duties were successfully undertaken by Miss lane McCarty and, with Ken- neth Vander Kolk as our class presi- dent, we went over the top in bond drives and other school activities. When roll call was taken in the beginning of our lunior year, 86 members responded. lt was during this third year together that we bade farewell with regret and admiration to lay De Haan and Frederick Van- den Bosch as they left us to serve in the armed forces of our Country. lh The Iuniors elected Ronald Schip- per for the office of president and Miss McCarty continued her spcn- sorship duties. The presentation of The Mad Hatters proved to be a smash hit and financially aided by this pro- duction, plans were made for the Iunior-Senior Banquet which was held at the Bowe Hotel. Great was the entertainment and wonderful the food at this royal feast. The suc- cessful magazine campaign added more pennies to the Class treasury ln September, 1945, 81 Seniors proudly walked through Zeeland High's corridors. At last we were the high and mighty Seniors. Ken- neth Vander Kolk was again elected class presidentg Miss Iuanda Howard became co-sponsor with Miss Mc- Carty. This was the last year our sponsors would spend in Zeeland High, for them the chime of wedding bells was soon to ring. Great Caesor's Ghost was se- lected for our second class play and soon after this dramatic comedy had been staged, arrangements began to be made for this l4th edition of the Stepping Stone. We realized the greatness of the task and plunged into it enthusiastically for we wanted to preserve the pleasant memories of our last and eventful year. All too quickly the plans for Skip- Day, Class Night, the Senior Ban- quet, and Baccalaureate services were a reality. The long-awaited caps, gowns, and diplomas were soon in our possession. We had reached our goal-stone, the steps of the future remain. As I drifted to sleep I suddenly found myself on the sunny streets of lanes ville a friendly little town on the banks of Tufford River At the corner of Main and Elm streets Chief of Police Henry Pyle was busy directing the heavy traffic I entered an establishment known in lanes ville as The Modern Dress Shoppe owned by the prominent Dona Looman who was busy reprirnanding the manager Howard Millard for failing to find a mistake in the ledger The salesgirls Hazel Morren and Barbara De Pree wer enioying the scene immensely Walking out of the shop I noticed a sign in the window announcing a con cert to be held in the Ianesville Bible Church of which the Rev Harvard Brou wer IS pastor The artists to be presented are Iarvis Wiggers and Gene Geib instrimentalists and Gordon Disselkoen vocal soloist with Evie Van Darn church organist accompanying Walking down the street I met Norma Hungerink who told me she was teaching the lst and 2nd grades at Ianesville Public School By the way Robert De Pree is principal of the Ianesville Iunior High School Norma and I walked into the Nyenhuis Drug Store operated by Roger Nyenruis eminent druggist of Ianesville and seated ourselves at the Counter We picked up a newspaper The Ianesville Chronicle and read this startling headline LEGISLATURE TO PASS NEW TAX BILL and underneath Secretary of the Treasury Esther Baar after conferring with President lerry Kraai re vealed to reporter George Van Koevering that the new tax bill placing a tax on shoestrings would be favorably reeived by the Senators Senator Will Meeusen is chairmen of the Finance Committee to which it was referred We turned to the editorial page where Editor Bill De Pree had Written an ardent dissertation condemning the city s school system On the last page of the first section we found a small notice Not responsible for any debts con tracted by anyone but myself Signed William D Boonstra Also in the clas sified FOR SALE column we found two interesting ads The first read thus FOR SALE Motorcycle Slightly banged up Call Gerald Gitchel if interested The second said FOR SALE A used lathe See Alma xampen Suddenly I caught sight of a small itern tucked away in the upper right hand corner bearing the caption Gentleman and Lady of the Day Selected. Upon reading the article I discovered that Ivan Compagner and his wife the former Beth Smallegan had been given this honor. We turned to the social page and learned that Vern Lokers recently re- turnod from scrubbing the decks of a PT boat and Edith Hendricks Vern's girl in every port were the guests of honor at a dinner given by Mr. Ron- ald Schipper and his wife the former Elsa De Witt. Also present at the social function were Lord and Lady Borst the Lady Borst being the former Ianet De longe. They are soon to embark on the majestic Queen Mary which will be leaving for England in the near future. With Roger Vanden Bosch as captain of the ship we are sure they will have a safe voyage. I was about to leave the drug store when the door suddenly burst open, and in rushed Lillian Venema, the city's telegraph operator, shouting breath- lessly, Eirel Theres a fire! George Kamp's garage is on fire! We rushed out on the street in time to see the fire truck go by. Fire Chief Harold Mast was occupying the driver's seat, and Fireman Peter Roon just swung on the back as it rounded the corner. When we arrived the fire was raging thoughout the building, and despite the heroic efforts of Gene Gorman to save his l933 Ford which was being re- paired, the garage and its contents was destroyed. The fire was said to have been caused by a short circuit. Gordon De longe, president of the National Insurance Corporation, with headquarters in this famous little town of Ianesville, came over to evaluate the damages and determined the loss at 315,000 Although Ianesville is but a small town, it is famous for its modern air- port, the headquarters for Syncopated Airlines. The president of this thriving business is Eugene Wyngarden. Many of its members are from the grades and lunior High but their excellent renditions promise a great future for the orchestra. Practices are held only twice a week but in these two practices, much is accomplished. The orchestra played an important role in the Christmas Musical and the May Festivalg it also participated in the district contest held in South High School, Grand Rapids. Here high honors were won for our music department. Commencement exercises are on the annual schedule of events for the year. The talent of this group is greatly appreciated when the strains of the Processional March accompany the Seniors as they file down the aisle. Mr. Geerdes is the very capable director and his own ability as a violin- ist has helped the string sections a great deal. The officers are president, Evie Van Dam: vice-president, Arloa Vander Veldep secretary-treasurer, Ruth Kuit, and Librarians, Edward Kampen and Merle Vredeveld. 52 CV! -e L.e...e E,sn Shirley Eeittnan Pony 'fan Sicofen florence 'Waiters flefna Tanzs Kiera Glass Pa,.:ne flagelnlrz 'ovf ' 1 :1e.er.: 1.:,,g.nx Lzro Marilyn 'Ny'nga:aen wer.: Lirnaneyan Q-aTr.te . e llfcfiffr Peggy Snerzaan S'.'.'.'.a !..':.r.1eQ' f., Cf! vs- Una 'fzrnragner wfv rn: '375,en?.e1'ie flzrrna lieltrnan Lefty' he :ts E .sseher 'f..r1sf':. A charming girl enters the household of a rnad family and is forced to play a role of which she knows nothing. Suddenly she wakes to the realization that she is a niece and is expected to ward off starva- tion with her paltry earnings. She ac- cepts the task and the riot begins. When she gets the low-down on the family she decides to give them one of the most ex- citing interludes thcit ever disturbed the tranquility of their existence, From then on the door begins to open and trouble keeps popping in. A broker to foreclose the mortage on the home - he finishes by proposing rriariage to the mad Mrs. Chil- ton. A modern youth comes to sneer - he falls for Flo, the eldest daughter. An officer who comes to arrest Cal, the spoiled son - he is captured instead by the alluring Sue. A young inventor who came to promote Mrs. Chilton to perfect his gold mine -he not only finds the end to his rainbow but finds enough romance to last him the rest of his life. A society matron and her daughter come to watch the Chilton downfall - only to see their victory. A physician comes to cure a case of mumps brought from India, only to find they don't exist. All this was started by a mere slip of a girl who erupted a vol- cano and turned the lava to milk and honey. The characters who were so ably di- rected by Miss Ver Strate are as follows Peg Southern Ioyce Mast Mrs. Maragaret I-lolmby Chilton . See you at play practice! Yes, this familiar cry rang through Zeeland I-ligh's halls for many Weeks before the Seniors finally presented their riotous three-act comedy, Great Caesar's Ghost. With the aid of hard-working committees and Miss Howards very capable directing, the production turned out by the play cast was in every Way a huge success. On November 15 and 16, crowds packed the gym to witness the Senior's fine dramatic performance. The Maxwell's are an average American family, happy and contented, and living a perfectly normal life until Mrs. Maxwell and her friend, Mrs. De Royster decided to attend the mystic meetings of the Great Majah. When Phineas comes to visit his friends and brings with him the fun-loving ghost, trouble begins. Although he is a bit difficult at times, he certainly proves to be a great help, for Helen is having trouble convincing her mother that Tommy Tucker is the one boy for her. So when Phineas, Aunt Polly and the Ghost all start to help, action really starts. There is trouble also for Dick, a neighbor boy, Hattie, the cook, Deborah, who has until this time been under her mother's domination, and Esther, the cute little maid, who was hypnotized by Majah. This drama, however, ends with everyone happy and heading for South America in search of more ghosts. Ioy ruled the day and Love the night SEPTEMBER Sept. 5, Zeeland High opens its doors at break of day. - The glamorous girls are ready to grace the halls with their charm. -The bashful Iunior boys of last year have jumped a step forward and are now the mighty men of the Senior class. e A bell rings. Fire alarm? Police? No! Wth brave and sturdy steps you are to march forward to your next hour class. - Hup- 2-3-4. ln a distance you can hear the great musician and leader, Mr. Geerdes, directing the famous 'lwhere do we go from here? band. - Effectual prac- tices for the football games. - Crutches for some. - Do you Want some sparkle in your humor? , then listen to the Boys Glee Club and ride with them on the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe! - Many subscribe for the Peeper. The motto is See the Peeper and read the better. - lf you have seen a rover in the Allegan grubs one day this month, it wasn't Ponce de Leon searching for the Fountain of Youth, but a newly initiated Z Cluber trying to find his way out.-The newly initiated Athletic Sisters are noted for opera sing- ing. f Frosh go shopping and buy green ribbons. - High blood pressure. Everyone excited and getting dates for the high school blow out party. - l-2-3-Kick victory over Otsego. Zeeland our men vs. Snooks the man stopper. -Our fine physiques give a 6-0 Wet beating over Godwin. Weather very favorable for ducks. P.S. The victory made the weather also very good for the Zeeland Chicks. - Puff Puff. Puff. We leave our Sept. month and ride on the steam, produced by the energy of the student body on the loco- motive yell given to us by our foursome. OCTOBER Time glides swiftly by in this fascinating and frollicking month of October. - The shining, shimmering, October moon has been a wonderful guide to all persons this month! Faculty took hints from students. - Girl Reserves be- comes a newly decorated organization. Definitely no gum chewing allowed during meetings. - Wyoming Park was the cause of our long faces for some time because of our first football defeat. e Many Gov't students are becom- ing good Zeeland citizens by attending the City Council. The Council was very honored to have the many suggestions given them by the l'll never tell' brains. e A touchdown! Horray! Why was everyone happy at the Coopers- ville game? Well, of course, we won! - Report cards out. Dandelions given to those with temperatures Ubelow zero. Y Peep. Peep. The Zeeland Chix just came out of the bomb bursting shell victory over Plainwell, l9-U.- Vacation for some teachers! They were really supposed to go to Teachers Institute. f Some students tried to keep in style by skipping school but were not very successful. - Life Raft ambitions found through out. After the humorous, serious, and interesting speech of Captain Eddie Rickenbackers Co-pilot, Lieut. Whittaker, in our own Zeeland High gym, we all wanted to have the romantic fun of being lost on the deep blue sea. - The band with its brown and gold colors flying was the feature during the half at the Sparta game. - The patter of feet, the sque-e-e-aky doors, and O O O the ghost! Some fun for everyone at the Youth Center Halloween party. Heres the secret! The Dont Be Bashful' sign over the davenport! -We go on step- ping one stone'l higher each month as we continue to be on the bright side of life. 72 f-Q Q' 1.41 4s Ml TOP LEFT - lefty' in 'law f+5 :Cr,i,.a- '1 riff- tt' rf' .rf TOP RIGHT ' ' A CENTER 1.151-'r gxk 111.-H f TOP CENTER-V Od. 1 ,Ac 3327: BOTTOM LEFT --f,:1:r iii -E?Y',l2f' 2:15 ich, 5:5 'Z'KT'E'fI, pr uf '4E:EN'frfR k'TCi5jAA:'i:fff1, TLf'1l If QQ l2 Sf,ff' 35,2 .
