Books are the sine qua non of our daily existence. The lndians, picturesque and hearty. lacked books as implements of warfare against ignorance. Books are indeed powerful weapons, and, in the fight against ignorance and prejudice, the Board of Education recommends books: library books, textbooks, reference books, et cetera. May books, good books, be your lasting friends! As you go forth as graduates. may you often wander back to the library, the heart of the school, and continue there your association with the volumes which grace the shelves, and which will enable you to continue your course in self-education. Above all, may you yourselves be living epistles. whose good deeds will be known and read by all mankind. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. WILLIAM D. VAN Loo. President JOHN A. DONIA. The Student Council includes the presidents of the four classes and a boy and a girl from each of the classes. The first aim of the Student Council was to get the Freshmen interested in Zeeland High and to have them enter into the High School spirit. This was accom- plished by a get-acquainted party held for the Freshmen on September 20. Previous to the Christmas vacation a very interesting Christmas program and party was sponsored by the Student Council. The main task of the Student Council was to organize a schedule of hall super- vision. Various members of the High School were appointed by the Student Council to maintain order in the corridors during the quiet periods. Through the efforts of the Student Council the classes have become more united and one spirit prevails-to make Zeeland High bigger and better each year. OFFICERS President ....... .. .... That they succeeded, we will not argue. Just take a glance at their record. Even as Freshmen, several were represented on the football, basketball, and debating teams. Not a few became members of the Glee Club. As Sophomores they added one more victory to their laurelsg namely, that two of their number were on the debating team which made such a splendid record in the State Championship Debate held at Ann Arbor in the spring. The declaimer for Zeeland High was also a Sophomore. As Juniors they were as eminently successful as they had been in the preceding years. Under the capable direction of the class sponsor, Miss Van Vessem, the class presented the hilarious comedy Adam and Eva. The Juniors are looking forward to next year- their last year in Zeeland High -and they hope to have one of the largest and best classes that ever was graduated from Zeeland High School. That the Sophomore Class has put their faith in this statement is evidenced bv the fact that never in the history of the Zeeland lligh School has so niuch latent talent been revealed in any one class. Several nienibers of the class revealed exceptional musical ability and were enrolled as members of the Glee Clubs. The class had the honor ol' having two of her rneinbers on the debating team. ln athletics also. the class of 19331 played a fairly prominent part. The girls successfully organized a club called the Girl Reserves. whieh organization greatly strengthened the morale of the entire class. All these things were accomplished under the capable sponsorship of Mr. Yanden Brink. CLASS OFFICERS l're.wif1c1z1 ...... ..,.... Under the patronage of Miss Van Kersen and the presidency of Lloyd Plewes. however, they gradually lost their verdancy and blossomed out anew in the realm of athletics. Several members of the class were fortunate enough to make the football and basketball teams. The class also excelled along artistic lines. An Art Club was formed to which all the girls of the class were eligible for membership. A great deal of musical talent was also exhibited. for several of the class became members of the Glee Clubs. The Board has tried hard to attain this goal and believe they have partially succeeded. The Board consists of a representative from each class. the captain of the hoys' and girls' haskethall teams, and also the captain of the football team. The athletic coach. the faculty manager, and the Superintendent of Schools are also members. The Board has charge of all financial matters pertaining to the Athletics of Zeeland High School and the years l928-l929 have proved successful. The Board heliexcs in athletics for girls and boys and have exerted themselves to provide the proper training and exercise for the students. Every student has the opportunity to participate since the Board has instituted interclass and interscholastic games. OFFICERS S4'f'lil'f11l'.l' .... .... De Jonge FOOTBALL On September sixth, in answer to the first call for football issued by our new coach, Mr. Vanden Brink, and assistant coach, Mr. Vande Water, about thirty-five men reported. Suits were issued and the initial practice at the athletic field began the following day. The first two weeks were spent in learning the fundamentals of the game. Then followed the real workg signal practices, formations, and scrimmages. The first game of the season was played with Grand Haven. The Zeeland team fought hard during the entire game, but at last lost to the strong class B school by the low score of 7 to 0. The next two games were with Grand Rapids schools, Ottawa Hills and Grand Rapids Technical. These games were both played at Zeeland, and the Grand Rapids teams were vlctorlous. The Fremont and East Grand Rapids games followed, the former resulting in a tie, and the latter in a victory for the Grand Rapids boys. The big game with Coopersville was next on the schedule. Zeeland worked hard in preparation for the battle and left for Coopersville with the determination to win. Although Coopersville was outplayed in every respect, Zeeland was unable to cross the goal line for a score, so the game ended with a scoreless tie. The Shelby game brought for Zeeland the only touchdown of the season. The last game of the season was played with Wayland. A game with Hart which had been scheduled, was cancelled because of wet grounds. Thirty-five fellows reported for the first practice, but Mr. Vanden Brink reduced the number to twenty. There were only a few veterans of last year's team to build around this year. but. due to the loyal and tireless efforts of our coach, we succeeded in putting out a snappy quintet. The season opened with a slaughter - Crandville being the victim. Later Sanga- tnck was decisively defeated. Fremont also was worsted at the hands of the Zeeland squad. lint Zeeland was not destined always to be victorious. Defeat visited us when the Class B quintet from Greenville took away our laurels. However. the spirit of Zeeland High School is indomitable. and defeat only spurs us on to greater endeavor. Consequently. the game we played with Grand llapids Christian High resulted in a two-point lead. in spite of the fact that Grand llapids Christian High is a Class B school. Again Zeeland fell into the clutches of defeat. Vlfe lost to the Alumni. Crand- ville. and Holland Christian High. The plucky spirit of the team. however. re-asserted itself. and in the next en- counter we defeated Saugratuck, although merely by a three-point lead. I nfortunately our team was forced to bow to Holland Christian High. but we gave them a hard tussle. l't1Q, Milt-me. s sex Hi' HL X.g M4gLges55-A ff -sjfe fb K ' ' Y-Y 5 l Last Row: Van Hoven, B1-ummel, Plasman, Van Dyke. To Mr. Arnett is due the highest praise for organizing and directing so splendid a team. The girls. also. showed a great deal of enthusiasm for this sport, and there was always a large number of girls out for practice. The first game called forth all the strategy the girls could employ. but they certainly made a fine showing, considering the fact that the Muskegon girls were the representatives of a Class HA school. The next game was played against the Alumnae. Our girls ran off with the heavy end of the score. The following game was played against the girls from the Grand Rapids Chris- tian High. a Class HBV school, who were defeated by an overwhelming majority. The two following games were with our old rivals from Holland. The first was played in the Holland gym and resulted in defeat for our girls. The return game was played in our gym and was one of the closest and most exciting contests of the season. The teams were so evenly matched that it was practically impossible to ascertain which would win. The final score, however. was in our favor. The last two games were won by the local girls when they defeated Grand Rapids Christian High and Byron Center. Pagr Hfly-f1':'f' X I ...sera . - le? We sent out invitations to the rest of the Seniors to join our club so that they might share our fun and we enjoy their comradeship. But our society has not been organized merely for our own pleasure. We have high ideals and many tasks to accomplish. Some of them are: to foster fine friend- ship among the members of our clubg to inspire loyalty to our schoolg to encourage school activitiesg and to make them of a clean. wholesome nature. Whether we have attained this goal is not for us to decideg but under the care- ful surveillance of our faithful sponsor, we surely have been inspired to higher ideals. She has been our confldante and helper for the past three years. and to her we owe a debt of deep gratitude. We all regret leaving our Alma Materg but we are going to carry our ideals into the world and be of value there as well. OFFICERS Pl't'.ifl16l1f ....... .... Last Fall they reorganized with Miss Marie De Cook as Captain. To secure funds to carry on their activities. they sold sweets at a number of football and baskeiball games. gave playlets, and held baked goods sales. At the January meeting of the P.-T. After two informal debates among those contesting for places on the team, the following were chosen as members of the debating squad: Alice Katte, Winona Wells, Helen Clark. Arloa Van Peursem, Geneva Van Dyke, Jean Van Hoven, and Dick Van Dorp. The first four named took part in the interscholastic debates. The question for debate this year was: Resolved: That the Federal Subsidy for the Development of an American Merchant Marine would be a Wise National Policy. Zeeland had practice debates with Union High, South High, and Central High, all of Grand Rapids. Two of the preliminary debates were forfeited by our opponents and the other two were won by two-to-one decisions. Zeeland High School met the Kalamazoo Normal High School in the first of the elimination contests and were defeated. the decision being 2 to 1. The debaters do not feel the least bit discouraged because they did not make a record similar to the one they made last year, for although they did not carry off the honors. they at least won another wall plaque trophy for the High School. l'114Qf Sm-'zz!'.-iff U , 'WX X x STEDDIING :::55:EHr Rogers fCoachJ, De Bruyn f0ratoryb Van Vessem 1CoachJ, Katte lDec1amationJ ORATORY AND DECLAMATIGN Zeeland High was very successful this past year in Oratory and Declamation.
