1924 THE STEPPING STON F Page 29 Sophomore Hrstory One brrght sunshrnx mor nrng ear lx rn September 1922 a group of fiftx one forsaken looking boxs and girls wandered de1ectedlx throught the corridors of the old high school burldmg rn a xarn attempt to find therr wax through the bewrlderrng mave of rooms rnto those labeled Latin I English I Botany Crxrcs and Algebra The following day howexer after a proper baptrsm and 1n1t1atron bx xxay of Wrchers horse tank rnto the my sterles of hlgh school llfe they found themselx es and qurckly developed mto what IS declared bx therr friends and envrouslx conceded bx therr would be rlvals to be the l1x elrest brarnrest pepprest or ganrzatron rn the history of the school the class of 1926 In all modesty lt can be sald that the best students the greatest athletes the most talented musrcrans and the ablest enter tarners are to be found ln the ranks of the Sophomore class But the upper classmen did not seem to be aware of thls fact for thex appeared rn a large bodx at our first par tv wrth lntentrons of preventrng rt The freshmen how ex er w ere too clex er for them haxlng proxrded for thrs and all returned to their homes safely with the exception of the presrdent been taken rn an automobrle bx sexeral oblrgrng members of the upper classes But ex en thrs sex ere ha7rng drd not weaken the pep of the class The boys came out strong for football and the class of 26 has been well repre ented on the team both x ears One notable fact rs that a sophomore has been chosen for next xear s captaln a verx rare occurrence rhey also took a promrnent part rn baseball and basketball and the team became so pr oficrent rn the latter that they took part rn the drstrrct tournament Athletrcs was not our only achrex ement In 1924 a sophomore was chosen to represent 7 H S ln the declamatorx contest and a sophomore glrl was xoted the most popular girl rn hlgh chool In our freshmen xear a number of peppx glrls of the class organlled a Camp Frre group the frrst of rts kmd rn Zeeland When the faculty suggested haxlng high school orchestra the sophs were some of the first to offer thelr servlces Now wlth several sophs one enlor and a few townspeople we haxe a xerx capable orchestra Thrs xear nearlx one half of the class took part rn the hlgh school operetta Vlanx were surprised to find our pr esrdent Cecil Hecox comrng to the fore ground suddenlx drsplaxmg a wonderful xorce and much dramatic abrlrty The Glee Llub also includes manx sophs Lnder Miss Schlutt s dlrec tion an operetta was grx en and thex intend to do more work of thrs kmd rn the near future Although the class ls somewhat smaller than last xear rt has not lost 1ts pep alwaxs a drstrnctlxe feature of the sophomores and lt rs plannlng exen greater achlex ements for the remalnder of 1ts hlgh school career . . . . , ................. .... ............. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .. .... .... .. .... .. ....
