Their personalities may be re- flected through their likes and dislikes, their actions and the people they are with. Zanesville High School, often lacking spirit, were raring to go. Cheers revelled in the gym as the players and coaches were introduced. The ZHS band and Devi- lettes also gave spirit with jazzy music and organized cheers. The student body anticipated a winning year. ti The 1977 Homecoming Queen, Diana Moorehead, and her court opened the Homecomong festivities with a flash of color and excitement. Once again, old-fashioned cars brought the queen and attendants around the stadium where their dates awaited to escort them onto the field. Student Council president, Mike Alfman, proudly crowned Diana queen. Her attendants were Debbie Straker and Amy Bruns, seniors; Lisa Wright and Theresa Ritchey, juniors; Lori Huey and Martha Mason, sophomores. Student Council members, traditional organizers of Homecoming, this year honored previous football players who have represented Zanesville High School in the annual North- South All-Star game over the past 30 years. To futher add to the wondrous glory of the night. Blue Devils severely crushed their opponent Linden McKinley, with an impressive 41-14 tally. The band, Razzle kept the dance lively and the dancers moving to the sound of popular tunes. The band members brought self-made films which were shown during intermission as an added feature. Eventually the spirit started to rise and the practice increased to bring us to the four main events of the year Band Competition at Wintersville in which the band placed first in their class, Cincinnati Bengals halftime performance, a parade at Walt Disney World , and the highlight of the year, The Orange Bowl Parade , in Miami Beach, Florida. The band performed at all football games to boost the Blue Devils on to victory. The pep band also made appearances at many basketball games and pep rallies. While in Miami the Band had some FLASHING experiences while around the pool. The boosters sponsored a New Year's Eve Party for the band, which was then followed by the band's own celebration of the event. Majorettes for this year were Feature Twirler, Lori Huey; Deanna Dingey, Carla Gillard, Cathy Coulson, Vicki Thorn, and Denise Watts. Majorettes were chosen at try-outs for their respective po- sitions and were required to be band members. They also attended a baton camp at Ohio Wesleyn to train for the season while the Feature Twirler was fortunate enough to teach at several camps. « DEVILETTES Devilette captain, Pam Watson, lead the corps in many activities which include various performances at football and basketball games, the pregame and halftime show at the Cincinnati Bengals game. This past December the Devilettes with the ZHS Band presented several appearances in Florida including one at Disney World, and one in the Orange Bowl Parade in Miami. On April 9th the Devilettes won 2nd place at State Competition that was held at Otter- bein College. They competed against five other drill teams in their catagory, Class A Live Music. Adapted by Sarah Spencer from Mark Twain's novel, the play was well-received by the audience. Complementing the acting were the impressive scenery and the special effects of the lighting, both of which enhanced such memorable moments of the play as the cave scene and the grave- yard scene. This particular play was an am- bitious undertaking for the dra- ma department due to the need for a very large cast, numerous set changes, vocal selections and special sound and lighting ef- fects. Despite the routine prob- lems and traumas, the cast, crews, director and technicians should be congratulated for an enjoy- able, successful production. The junior class play was presented by members of all three classes and the Z.H.S. drama department. It was presented on the night of Friday, March 31 in the Z.H.S. auditorium. The play evolved around a school teacher named Sylvia Barrett who was teaching in Calvin Coolidge High School for the first time, the students, who were mostly sweat hogs, gave Miss Barrett an extremely hard time. Two of the students who were played by Karen Zwell- ing and Robert Noll were potential dropouts. They harrassed Miss Barrett to the point where she was ready to give up being a teacher. The cast for this years play were: Mel Straker, Robert Noll, Shari Jenkins, Rick Brunston, Jeff Jenkins, Carol George, Susan Bryant, Karen Zwelling, Jeff Hawk, Susan Delaney, Roxanne Wells, John Shaffer, Lori Obenour, Cindy Moore, Dan Andrews, Erin Osburn, Jeff Bradshaw, Gail Barrett, Rikki Cor- bett, Cheryl Wilson, Ron Grimes, Debbie Caliman, and Matt Henery. - Top Left — the class of sweat hogs seem a little bored with Miss Barrett. STAIRCASE STARS and technicians w Nj On February 10, Student Council — sponsored Fifties Day and Dance began with the arrival of typical students to Z.H.S. in weird attire. Their clothing, hair styles, shoes, of course, reflected those crazy days of the fifties. Junior Class sponsored a nostalgic movie, The Sting for which students were dismissed from classes to attend. Highlights of the annual dance, with followed a home basketball game against Marietta included musical pantomimes from both faculty members and students. The juniors were dismissed from classes to help decorate the cafeteria and to build a 15-feet long pier which served as the entrance way into the Harbor . Mr. Kitchen, Miss Blatt, Mr. Lucas, Mr. Clark, Miss Sable, and Mr. Powell helped the juniors deco- rate. A large painted ship, the Moonlight Fantasy, served as a backdrop behind the band. The sound of Crosswinds pleased its listeners and kept dates dancing late into the night. Due to the heat, much of the prom took place outside. The fish- nets on the ceiling and the mural painted by Bob Wilson and Dawn Ann Brown added to the theme Moonlight on the Harbor . Due to technical photographic difficulty, some couples' pictures were ruined. :yi(mAWJ%rs • $ CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT (1) Lisa Wright and Rick Walker can't wait to start the evening. The Invocation was read by Vice President Deb Straker and Jodi McKinney, Secretary, made a speech entitled What Will Happen To Class of '78? The final address was presented by Dr. Ellsworth Statler. Then the long-awaited diplomas were handed out to deserving recipients, as the Class of '78 made their final departure from Z.H.S. As the newly formed Z.H.S. Ski Club took to the slopes, many for the first time, found it to be a beautiful and exciting experience. They left every Monday evening for Butler, Ohio to ski at Clear Fork Ski Resort. The club skied from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. usually re- turning at midnight (weather permitting). The club also sponsored var- ious other outings. Under the supervision of Mr. Richard Bremer, traveled to Seven Springs, Pennsylvania for a weekend of slaloming, and in February members tried their luck at a different type of out- door adventure; cross-country skiing. The big event started at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 2, and continued, non-stop until 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Four people worked each lap, two pulling and two pushing. The team was supported by loyal students and parents, who cheered them on through the hot sun, into the dark chilly night, rain, and into the sun again. A stereo was set up in the stadium for entertainment; food was pro- vided for the gang. After pushing 370 laps, the last victory lap was pushed by everyone. The adventures of such characters as arch villains Chaos I and Chaos II, portrayed by Randy Polen and Dawn Kimsey respectively, were closely followed. They were in apposition with the All-American heroes Agent 86, Agent 99, and Agent 13, played by Matt Henry, Tracey Balias, and Connie Melhorn. The underlying idea and title for the production was taken from the old television series entitled Get Smart. n 51 UNDEFEATED IMPS TALLY PERFECT RECORD A powerful duo of brothers, Bruce and Brian Cillard, and a solid defensive unit carried the Blue Imps to a perfect 10-0 sea- son. Coach Chuck Dilbone, in his first year as head coach, said. “The players had good attitudes and were willing to work hard to achieve success. The Gillards were the spark in the offense as Bruce, the quarter- back, completed 50 of the 76 passes for 768 yards. Bruce also rushed for 110 yards. Brian rushed for 800 yards and caught six passes for 38 yards. Randy Lyons ran for 430 yards. Larry Lavy was the leading receiv- er on the team, catching 19 aer- ials for 274 yards. S6 The Imps piled up yardage very easily as they rushed for 1699 yards, passed for 810 for a total yardage gain of 2509. The Imp defense only gave up 1105 yards. The squad of ten, led by Senior captain Brady Young, had only two returning lettermen. Persistent illness plagued the team throughout the year; however, victories were scored over Coshocton, Morgan, John Glenn, and Rosecrans. Second year letter awards went to Brady Young and Mike Dantonio, while first year awards went to Don Ayers, Don Iwaniec, Dan Mell, Rick Walker, Mike Alfman, Mel Straker, and Sandy Weinberg. Most Valuable Runner this year was Brady Young, and most Improved Runner was Eric Shiplett. The coveted fourth-annual Gold Brick award went to Dan Mell. On the whole the records and turnouts were better than last year because team members have gained exper- ience. The ten-member team, led by Coach Roberta Smith, began practices in mid-August, but were able to compile only a 1-9 record. More experienced players and tough competition were encountered against such teams as Newark, Lancaster, Marietta, and Upper Arlington. Zanesville chalked up its only win against Cambridge. Top singles raqueteer was Sharri Jenkins followed closely by Jodi Wilson. Leading the doubles slot were Rita West and Lisa Moberly. The season ended in October with the district meet in Columbus and the C.O.L. meet in Newark. Some members practiced in the newly opened Sunrise Indoor Tennis Courts during the winter months. ss Pictured clockwise from upper left: (1) Golf team, top row — Ed Borkey, Randy Dittmar, George Morrison, Perry Thomas, Don Riley, Mike Ivie, Chris Hiett. Coach Robert Jenkins had three seniors with experience who were the top low scorers on the team. They were Ed Borkey, Don Riley, and Randy Dittmar. Juniors gaining a lot of experience were Greg Gamble and Mike Ivie. Sophomores were Perry Thomas, John Burns, and Greg Nessline. The Z-ville golfers finished fifth in the COL tourney. In COL matches the Devils lost to Newark twice, split with Marietta, and Lancaster, lost to Upper Arlington once. Tri- Valley, Maysville, and Philo were the other Devil victories. 67 amt Swim team, coached by Mr. Steve Flower, swam to a 5-3 season. The team improved through treacherous practice and was aided by many experienced swimmers. Bill Singleton and Deb Straker were the Tankers' captains, and helped coach the swimmers on. At districts. Bill Singleton qualified for the 100-yard backstroke and placed 18th in state competition. Most improved swimmer was Ray Donley and most valuable was Bill Singleton. 69 GYMNASTS BREAK EVEN Members of the gymnastics team were Diana Stewart, Terri Pettry, Cathy Roby, Mary Darst, Cindy Dingle, Cathy Frakes, Misty Parsons, Lola Moon, Lisa Moberly, Martha Swope, Fonda Hammond, Connie Newton, Penny Butler, Shari Jenkins, Johnna Ray, and Joy Hennessey. The team was coached by Mrs. Nancy Dunlap. The team recorded three wins of the six meets in which they competed. In addition to regular competition, team members participated in districts held at Zanesville High School. Pictured is: highest scorer, Mary Darst, practicing on the uneven parallel bars and vault. Injuries and lack of interest plagued the Zanesville High School Wrestling Team for the '77-78 season. The team was forced to forfeit matches at several meets due to the fact that there were only a few members on the team. This lowered their record considerably. Members of the team under Coach Bevard were: Wrestlers Chris Blake, Tom Brennan, Ron Butcher, Gary Green, Ron Grimes, Ron Jewell, Max Winland, Walt Withers; Trainers Gregg Moore, Darrell Perry; Stats Erin Osburn, Diane Taylor, and Roxanne Wells. 71 sBLUE ANGELS SWING 72 INTO ANEWSP0RTK 74 The varsity Blue Angels turned in a disappointing 6-8 record, defeating such rivals as Marietta, Cambridge, and Lan- caster. Varsity honors went to Lorraine Lynum, M.V.P., top scorer, and top re- bounder; Pam Iden, most assists; Carol Parker, most improved. Reserve honors went to Brenda Harper, M.V.P. and top scorer. In summing up the season, varsity coach Ms. Vickie MacLaine, remarked, I don't feel we played up to our poten- tial. One game we would be red-hot and look like a team that had been playing together for several years, and the next game we would look bad. We couldn't develop any consistency. Frahes leads ZHS scoring ( J ) At the beginning of the season, the Blue Devils were chosen by their respective coaches to win the C.O.L. championship. The Devils were marked as one of the most talented teams in the State. Second-year head coach, Len “Moose Hardman, had four let- ter men back from a year ago and finished with an 8-12 record. The Blue Devils opened their season at home against Columbus Eastmoor. With a mighty crowd at Z.H.S., the Devils prevailed 49- 41. Salem and Newark were the Devils' second and third wins. The Devils were then thought to be on their way, but Grove City •ai’j'j'j Tabeat 5 Tfsei and former state champions, Co- lumbus Linden-McKinley, dealt the first two losses. The Devils then beat Lancaster, lost to Mas- sillon in overtime, and then trav- elled to Marietta. With a win here the Devils were to be the top team in the C.O.L. but the Devils lost 74-68. The Devils fin- ished their regular season with a win over state-ranked Steuben- ville. Then they beat Morgan and lost to Cambridge in the tourna- ments. Chuck Frakes, a senior guard, took home several honors: the top Blue Devil eager, most points (303), best average (13.4), and most assists. Junior Chris Thomas was perhaps the most consistent Devil scorer (289 points) and was the top rebounder. Dave Strickland scored 222 points and Brady Young 80. Thomas also lead in field goal percentages with 54% and Frakes in free throw percentage with a blistering 86%. Members of the team were seniors Chuck Frakes, Brady Young, co-captains; Steve McGlade, Mark Paul, and Randy Willett; juniors Dave Strickland, Chris Thomas, Mike Gentry, Bill Shumate, and Scott McGlade. . The team had only two meets in which they tied Logan and lost to Coshocton. During the May 13th sectionals, Sheila Singleton placed 3rd in the 220, Lola Moon 3rd in the 440 and the relay team 3rd in the 440. FOR LADY TRACKERS 81 The men's track team, under Coach Wayne Clark, had a disappointing season with a lone dual meet victory against Licking Valley. The cindermen, who tallied 15 total victories in other invitational meets, had only three returning lettermen. The team's leading scorer was junior Dan Yarano who took a third in the discus in the C.O.L. meet and placed fifth in both the discus and shot put at the sectional meet. Most Valuable Runner of the team went to senior Burton Moon who placed fifth in the C.O.L. meet and fourth in the sectional in half-mile competition. First-year letter awards went to: Rick Myers, Rob Donaho, Tom Burton, and Eric Shiplett. Second-year awards were given to: Burton Moon, Dan Yarano, and Kevin McCollister. JJJW smsms 33 3:3 3 The Zanesville High School Tennis Team, coached by Steve _ Flower, finished its season at 6-5 with the help of outstanding players, Mark Mees, Doug Miles, John Burns, Allen George, Troy Balderson, Mark Browning, and Mac McCoy. The season was highlighted by the trip of No. 1 singles player, Mark Mees, and the No. 1 doubles team, Doug Miles and John Burns, to the district tournament after their victories at the COL Sectionals. Although Miles and Burns were unsuccessful in their bid for a title, Mees received first place and then went on to the state tournaments at Ohio State University in Columbus. Mees walked away as the Class AAA champion; the first ever for ZHS. Zanesville's wins this year included defeats of Logan, Newark Catholic, Grove City, Marietta, Newark, and Coshocton. This year's season got off to a slow start with consecutive losses to Marietta and Upper Arlington. Later losses included Cols. Whetstone, Lancaster, and Ottawa Hills. Members of the team included seniors Mac McCoy and Mark Browning receiving trophies for their second year of action, along with juniors Mark Mees, Allen George, and Doug Miles also receiving second year trophies. First year letter winners were varsity sophomores John Burns and Troy Balderson, along with reserves, senior Ron Yarano and sophomores David Weinberg, Paul Safko, Craig Hardesty, and exchange student Roberto Tiexilero. Most Valuable Player for this year's team was Mark Mees with senior Mac McCoy named Most Improved Player. Mark Browning 8 4 Drawing a fitting end to a climatic season and showing talent for a promising career, Mark Mees captured the Class AAA state tennis championship at Ohio State University in Columbus. His AAA crown, the first ever for ZHS, is just one of many impressive victories for Mark. Other wins include 3 time winner of the Ohio Jaycee State Championship, the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, and the Super Bowl in New Orleans. Mark's busy summer schedule begins in June and ends in mid-August with only a four day break in July. Stops this summer include Oxford, Oh. for the Ohio Valley District Qualifier, the Western Closed tournament in Indianapolis, San Jose, Calif, to compete in the National Hardcourts Championship, the National Clay Courts in Nashville, Springfield, Oh. for the Western Open, and the U.S.T.A. Nationals in Kalamazoo, Mich. Since his family doesn't travel with him, Mark spends most of his free time with doubles partner and close friend Scott Wallace from Upper Arlington. Ironically enough Mark's only loss this season came from Scott, with his final record being 28-1. Mark Mees, left, shows the plaque he received after winning the class AAA state tennis championship. The year was to be a good and productive year but for several seniors who did not show up to play after having exceptional years as sophomores and ju- niors. Coach Donis Toler suffered his first losing sea- son since being named coach, his teams have won five COL championships in nine years. Senior Chuck Frakes took home the most Valuable Player Award presented to the top Seniorplayer. Frakes batted 307 and played a steady outfield. The teams leading hitter was second basemen Jim Borkey, Borkey hit for a 340 average. Players that earned letters were Mike Adams, and Scott Barr, both sophomores. Matt Antonetz, George Bar- nett, Nick Drake, Tim Os- borne, Rick Walker and Craig Williams. Second year players who received tro- phies were Seniors Ed Bor- key and Darryl Moody. 86 90 HERE AND THERE WE ARE THE SUNSHINE me world is engulfed in total darkness Until — Suddenly a glimmer of glorious light breaks. Superintendent As we reflect upon the school year 1977-78, we are grateful for many things. The constituency sup- ported us with very good confidence in approving added operation of these schools. Then, of course, we were fortunate in the national competition to open a new school facility to replace two of circa 1850 and 1886, which many of current Zanesville High School students have attended. The new school will be the General Rufus Putnam Communi- ty School. We have been pleased with the new interest of our students in things academic and the current year s SAT scores showed average and above average results by comparison with the whole state and the nation. We believe that more students could benefit from an increased effort in the world of ACADEM- ICS, for after all it is the intellectual effort which serves the human individual longest and most flexi- bly. More students ought to develop a pride in know- ing and possessing knowledge and making use of it to acquire greater insight into their existence now and in the future. We continue to be interested watchers and work- ers with youth. We have a great deal of faith in the future as we work with students. And while we keep up an effort to make the acquirement and make better use of learning, we are fully aware of what it means to grow up in a world that is itself of grand perplexity but for young people it may even appear to be moreso. We wish the best for the graduates of 78 who have experienced the newer expectations and requirements for completing their experiences at Zanesville High School, and look to the classes of '79 and '80 already represented in this COMUS.
