The varsity basketball team missed the C. O. L. top rung by four points, went on to play among the 16 best Ohio teams in tourna- ment jousts. COMUS dates back over fifty years at ZHS, starting as a literary magazine with a title taken from the Greek god of mirth and revelry. When it metamorphosed into a yearbook, the title represented the pag- eantry of ZHS life, often serious as Well as mirthful. Preparing a pictured record of the high school years that will be preserved in the archives of ZHS and cherished in the memory of graduates is a job that occupies most of the school year. During the first months ads are secured, the first subscription dollar is collected, and junior-sophomore pictures are taken. Senior editor warns her class that 'Auf at Eff Lex serv 44 , ,Nfii? Recent technological development by Russian engineers has spurred our country to a realization that, if our way of life is to survive, We must have more talented, trained scientists and engineers. This has given im- petus to increased interest in high school math and science. Newly-organized in the spring of 1955, the 53 Xenoquerists SCIENCE CLUB is composed of those students desiring to increase their knowledge of science, to perfect their scien- tific techniques, to render scientific service, and to understand the importance of science. FUTURE TEACHER members, those who are interested and plan to enter the teaching profession, form the Zanesville High School branch of the national Future Teachers of America. These students are working to bet- ter teaching conditions in future years. The annual project is for each student to gain first-hand experience by observing classes in elementary schools. Club programs feature movies and guest speakers who are capable teachers. Members are inducted in May. Many had been classmates since kindergarten, and it was difficult to realize that after this year they would be parted. During the past months the Class of 1957 has participated in many exciting activities. Extracurricular activities were fitted into schedules in such a way that any senior worth his salt was always busy. With realization of their traditional role of responsibility came a deepening apprecia- tion: of the wonderful facilities of the high school, of the knowledge they wished they had taken time to acquire. S v . Q . uniafzat The class of '58 entered ZHS in September, 1955, filled with awe for the beautiful four- level building which was to be their house of learning for three glorious years. Soon they accomplished what had seemed impossible- finding their way through the long, spacious halls. Near the end of the sophomore year the class ordered rings which were received in September 1957. Since more organizations are open to juniors than to sophomores, their second year at the new high school passed in a busy whirl of constructive activity. In March class of- ficers were elected to serve throughout the coming senior year, and plans for the theme decorations, and refreshments for the Junior Prom were soon underway. The students are now looking forward with eager anticipation to the approaching year. As seniors they are planning to be models for the underclassmen. Brains. hard work, and a large supply of ideas were necessary to make the Junior Prom a success Shown below are the members of the Prom Committee who possess these necessary characteristics Mrs Supplee served as adviser for the group. If 1 wk X I ,- I I fn Gamelfae Sapfzamafaed, On a sunny morning, September 4, 1956, 591 sophomores trod the steps of Zanesville High School for the first time as students. These expectant teenagers were leaving be- hind the schools of Grover Cleveland, Theo- dore Roosevelt, and John Hancock to begin a new school life at ZHS. The first few weeks seemed very different, but the students fell into the full swing of activity within a short time. They were thankful for the help they received from the upperclassmen. Soon vacancies in such clubs as Ifka, Fel- New The pretty creatures at the right show the typical spirit and gaiety of sophomores at a social event. These were among many who attended a Ship Ahoy party given by the Friendship Club for the fem- inine members of the soph- omore class early in Septem- ber. All girls boarded their respective ships and went off on a voyage of games and merriment in the Z.H.S. gym. lowship, Movie Operators, Office Aids, Stu- dent Council, Junior Red Cross, Hi-Y, View Finders, Radio Staff, Zanesvillian, Comus Staff, and PTSA were being filled by new sophomores. The Christmas holidays passed with many parties and two dances. By the second se- mester students felt as if they were veterans of the school. In coming years the members of this class of 1959 must do their share to maintain the high ideals of their Alma Mater. 1 ..- ef K IX .4-. xv .Q mi Q -an I X ww 4 ev Q7 la' 451-W.-M V V 1:9 .HP ezmaf 59 1 1 1 1 1 X x 11 11 f 11 11 11 111 1 1-51 1 1 11 1 111x1 1 x 111 1 11111 11 11 x 11 11 1511 Iv, 1 1711111 .MS IV sob 1 1 1 1 1 11 1 1 11 X1111r1 11 11xx 15111xx11 FX X 1111 1 1 xx 11x111 1111 1 15 11xx 11 1 1 I11111 Ill C 1111115111111x X1111 1511111111' 11x11 1 1 1 1 11, 1 8 151111111 13111111 1511r 1 11 Q 1 A 15111111x 151111111 15111 11111 Q 4 111 11x 15111111 1 ' , .' as P fa - -If af I, , 11.11 1. 111111. x11111.11. 1 -,,. . 111111 X11.111.15.1111.11.1.X11111 , ,J . . 1 fs.
