She has tended ships and visited ports from Naples to New Orleans - from Norway to Mayport. YOSEMITE will continue to deploy periodically as her role as one of the Atlantic Fleet's deployable tenders continues. Commissioned on 25 May 1944 at Tampa, Florida, YOSEMITE was immediately assigned to Pearl Harbor where she and her crew were tasked with repairing war-damaged destroyers of the Paciiic campaign. Six months later upon completion of this mission, YOSEMITE left Hawaii for the Caroline Islands where she was made responsible for readying the destroyer forces for their part in the assult on Okinawa. At the end of the war YOSEMITE steamed for Japan, arriving in Sasebo in September, 1945. After six months of duty she left Japan and steamed for her new homeport, Newport, Rhode Island, where she commenced duties as tender to the Atlantic Fleet destroyer forces. She remained in Newport until 1969 when she set sail for her new homeport, Mayport, Florida. Here she has proven to be an invaluable part of the Atlantic Fleet and has established a truly enviable reputation for excellence and can dol' spirit. She went to Boston in 1976 for a complete overhaul in the yards so that she can continue to deploy to the Mediterranean as required. The Busy Lady has some impressive vital statistics. She is 531 feet long and 73 feet in the beam. She carries enough fuel to take her nearly around the world. She carries approximately thirty oflicers and eight hundred fifty enlisted men with room for additional men if needed. During this latest deployment, YOSEMITE had tended ships in Naples, Palma, Augusta Bay and Rota. These ports, along with a liberty port visit to Toulon, France has made this deployment one of her more interesting ones. YOSEMITE is currently commanded by Captain Richard F. Donnelly. 1 K X lux art., 2 1 , 4 i SS YGSE ITE D-195 For over thirty-three years YOSEMI- TE has done an admirable job of tending ships for the Fleet, both home and abroad. The Repair Dept. has received numerous messages from all of Yosemite's customers, and these messages reflect the can do spirit of the men assigned to the Repair divisions. They have worked numerous over time hours to accomplish jobs that they have been tasked with. Many of the men have been required to go TAD to help out deployed ships with their mechanical prob- lems. The outstanding work done by this Department has earned Yosemite praise and given her much prestige through out the Sixth Fleet. The Repair Department only reinforces the belief held by the Yosemite crew that we are indeed the best in the F leetf, LCDR Meyett and the entire department deserve a hearty congratulations for a job well done on this deployment. Taking a moment to reflect back over the time spent on this 1977-78 Med f b t as I am sure we realize, necessary. We were cruise, the time spent away from our families and friends was hard on all o us, u d l'b rt orts along with the bad ones We got a chance to see a part of the world that many of us fortunate enough to visit goo 1 e y p . had not seen before, and that some of us will never see again. At the same time, we managed to keep Yosemite's reputation for excellence intact, and even added additional prestige to that reputation. The can-dol' spirit was very much in evidence through-out the entire cruise. I am sure that we will remember for many years, the beauty of Palma, the uniqueness of Naples and the Italian people, the high prices and cold weather of Toulon, and last but not least, Augusta Bay. h b ht friends closer together and has also been the basis for the establishing of new friendships. Common The cruise as roug , problems, as well as 'sharing the work load and standing the watches helped bond the crew together. So, as the cruise winds down ' ' h t th and ho e that this to the last days, we, the staff, hope that we have captured some of the high and low points of t e pas mon s p k memories of the 1977-78 Yosemite Med Cruise for years to come.
