These people may be of different backgrounds, but, in the city, they work and live together. People in the city encounter many varied experiences. Whether socially or intellectually, each experience helps to enrich the person. In this sense, the school is also a city, a city within itself. -0Xanaa. Sadie Hawkins was one of the greatest Senior events this year. Faced with the problem of engineer- ing a date and paying for everything, the Senior women did very well despite much consternation. The dance's success can be attributed to its tradi- tional popularity and the dedication of Mary Pom- ponio and Senior Class President Suzy Beamer. The activities at the dance included a pie eating contest, pumpkin carving contest, square dancing, and apple bobbing. Tracy Copeland and Robert De- merest won the titles of Daisy Mae and Lil' Abner. 114 SADIE HAWKINS Debbie Kahn searches the crowd for her missing date. The Senior team was supported by the wild and crazy Powderpuff cheerleaders. Quarterback Suzy Beamer and halfback Val Sheppard, who led the Seniors with two touchdowns, starred for the Seniors. This year marked the initiation of the Sophomore-Freshman Powderpuff rivalry. Running back Maria Nicholson scored both touchdowns for the Sophomores, as they won 12-8. Stephanie Gant scored in the last two minutes for the Freshman to account for the final margin. Seniors always take the Powderpuff game seriously. The Freshmen fire out against the Sophomores on a running play. 116 POWDERPUFF FOOTBALL The juniors worry on the sidelines as the Seniors dominate the game. Richard Crabill complains Why don't you ever look at my face?” Marianne Pizzi saves a touchdown for the Sophomores with this tackle”. POWDERPUFF FOOTBALL 117 Eat Outs One can tell from the lack of cars that Pizza Hut is filled with freshmen. Popular places where Yorktown students indulge in their munching habits include Krispy Kreme for the early bird vandals and the late night partiers, Taco Bueno where students gather for their midday fiestas, and Fabulous Fritzbees Flying Food Factory where David Mayer will ensure you your YARDS of fun! EAT-OUTS 119 Vandalism They seem very proud after a TP job on a classmates house. 120 VANDALISM Unfortunately there is much evidence of vandalism around the school. It comes in the form of graffiti on the walls, broken windows, stolen down jackets and lockers broken into. Even after Mr. Kurds' efforts to stop vandal- ism, the problems still persist. With the help of coopera- tive Yorktown students vandalism can be lessened. VANDALISM 121 The Career Center provides an opportunity for students to be exposed to courses in addition to their regular studies. The students are able to specialize in different areas that assist them in pur- suing a career which doesn't require college edu- cation such as fashion merchandising, hotel man- agement, and also auto mechanics. In addition, dif- ferent specialized week-end courses are offered such as SAT preparation. The ESAW program is also offered which permits students to learn the English language in addition to their native tongue. The Career Center is very helpful to many Yorktown students. Career Center Harry Barnes learns the finer arts of cooking. Home-Ec is an important course at the Career Center. Mr. Clemons instructs Sam Ayoub in the intracasies of the Home Air Conditioning system. 122 CAREER CENTER Students can make clothes to supplement their wardrobe. John Kelly cleans up after a project. Kevin Dowden works to repair a crankcase. CAREER CENTER 123 We said this freshman was too young to drive. Some people drive MC's, but Greg Stoddard drives a matchbox. Cars Motor vehicles at Yorktown seem to be a necessity for the so- cially active student. When asked whom he wanted to take out, one student replied, A taller girl with a license and a car. It seems that ownership or free access to a vehicle is a determining factor on whether one is able to take out a date. Motor vehicles at Yorktown are of wide variety. The rugged ad- venturer owns a truck, the competitor owns a race car, the partier owns a van, and the pragmatist owns the compact. A person's car is part of him. In our mechanized day, a motor vehicle is the in thing. Is this student's car parked in the teacher's parking lot again? Human Relations Volleyball The faculty tried hard, but did not have the physical capabilities to match up with the students (except, of course, the seniors). The Human Relations Committee sponsored a student-faculty volleyball game on January 31. The stu- dents were divided into three teams by grade. A combined freshman and sophomore team defeated the faculty, 9-7. The juniors lost 8-6 and the Seniors whipped the teachers 5-4. The games pro- moted spirit and human rela- tions and provided- a good break from the daily school routine. How did this sophomore get on the senior team? Richard Crabill shows the form that caused Mr. Allen to call him the best player on our team. You cross the river and find a place to park your car. Then you jump out, walk the ten blocks back to your destination and smiling at the bouncer so she won't card you, wait 45 minutes so you can be seated. Where are you? Downtown of course, but the problems of parking, long lines, and high prices don't deter anyone from going there. Places frequented by students include Tammany Hall, The Tombs, Winstons, Bojangles, The Bayou, Crazy Horse, Desperado's, and Beneath It All. Emily Litela asks earnestly, Why does everyone want to go back to the Womb? What? Tombs? Oh, never mind. During free time, after school, and while skipping class, Yorktown students often gather in the Forum to talk, snack, study, play games, and just pass the time. Similar to SATs in length, the Achievement Tests are also dreaded by students who have to spend their Saturday mornings taking them. College Night at Yorktown this year was very successful. It provided an opportunity for students and their parents to visit representa- tives from various colleges. The school's rep- resentatives, who provided information about prices, grade and SAT requirements, and school size, were very helpful to the students. The most popular colleges seemed to be: UVA, William and Mary, Madison, Cornell, and Dartmouth. The instate colleges were especially well attended by the high school students. The upcoming seniors should plan to attend next year's College Night program. Long lines to get into the cafe forum due to the careful identifica- tion procedures that school officials take. 130 COLLEGE Caravans This year there were caravans to ail the away football games. The meeting place was Yorktown's automotive parking lot where stu- dents spent most of the time socializing before the games. The cars then proceeded to the game, sometimes blocking traffic or directing it. The mood was generally rowdy and the success of these caravans showed Yorktown's spirit and enthusiasm in supporting the team when they needed it most. Caravans helped to bring our student body together. Caravans brought out the spirit and clubs of Yorktown. Unfortunately, the caravans used a great deal of fuel. The use of fuel created exhaust problems. Mike Cross is not happy to be caught exhausting here. CARAVANS 131 This winter Arlington was hit with the worst snowstorms since 1922. Students had to grap- ple with limited parking which evoked some to park where they shouldn't have. Officer Baird made sure these students would not make the same mistake again. Others found their cars snowbound. The students did have one consola- tion. Schools were closed. Unfortunately, they were closed too long, and days had to be made up. Fifties Day Snow caused the first fifties day to be a flop, however, several very spir- ited underclass men came through and dressed up. The sock hop and fifties day held in March was much more successful. Scott Woodside was the disc jockey for the sock hop, which created much excitement. Jim Rhodes is amused with David Ciano's attire. Lisa Daniels tried to lure the guys with her sexy new outfit. Macke machines are the best thing since the fifties! FIFTIES 133 Wind on the Water The theme for last year's Homecoming Dance was Wind on the Water. The Dance was held on December 9th and a hard working decorations committee headed by Carole Pecore came up with some innovated ideas which included parachutes, strobe light, and a bubble machine. Couples entered into the Octopus' Garden and danced to the music of Sun Valley. The attendants were Garth Erdossy and Kathleen Palmes, Mike Stehman and Frieda Cooper, Kim Hendrick and Putzie Gillilland. Yorktown students work in a variety of places all over town. Food places such as McDonalds and department stores like Wards will hire anyone who walks in off the streets, but other places of employment include Arlington Hospital, drug stores, and Tyson's corner. The musical comedy, a spoof of melodrama supporting Prohibition, tells the story of a once-quiet town after the opening of a bar. Although a leaky roof forced the production to move to the Williamsburg In- termediate School, the play was a great success. Ms. Jean Dickson directed the play, and out- standing performances were given by Mark De- Labarre, John Pomerance, Jack Lechner, Wendy Radding, and Alice Klipple. Jim Scott and Lisa Reeder play the parts of two lovebirds. Mark DeLaBarr, owner of the bar, argues the benefits of alcohol with the tea-totaling doctor (Chris Fretts). 140 TEN NIGHTS Wendy Radding begs her drunken father, Jack Lechner, to come home. The story was based on a man, who was idolized by women. The crowd enjoyed the excellent performance by the cast mem- bers. The stars, Moira Ghizzoni and Mark De- LaBarre, under the guidance of Ms. Dixon performed magnificently. Stellae has catipulted into realms such as the wild party-giving circuit, the dimensions of collecting for the Heart Fund, the orbit of decorating the Children's Ward at Arlington Hospital. Far out, you may say! Nannu, Nannu, we say. Stellae's dazzling display of stars reaches into every grade here at earthly Yorktown High School. Stel- lites are the satellites of service with a galaxy of girls. Never having been eclisped by other clubs, Stellae shines on through the universe. We in Stellae are dedicated to making everyone feel right at home, no matter if they're an extra-terrestrial or not. (Green Martians are not discriminated against.) Everyone is welcome. And although our heads may be in space, our hearts are in the right place. So, it has been a good launching for Stellae this year. . We know the landing will be just as great. And in the words of our far reaching language — May the force be with you. Stellae Shines. Front row: B. Misra, P. Holt, D. Schwartz, D. Buell, T. Copeland, L. Stem, A. Mamaed; Row Two: K. Nelson, D. The 1979 Yearbook Staff of Street Survivors worked diligently on their Book of Dreams. Cut- ting in on a session, we find that Stranger in Town Mark Romness is Back in the U.S.A. But Seriously, Folks, the first on our top 40 list of Little Criminals are Little Queen Anne Sanford and Desperado Jimmy McGavin who are just Best of Friends. However, Jimmy prefers to live under a Grand Illusion and proclaims It's a Heart- ache. Now let us say a few words about . . . Pam Maria who wants to Fly Like an Eagle to get to the Boys in the Trees. Chriss McKowen is another staffer who is Worlds Away. Actually, she's at the Hotel California experiencing a Hard Days Night and later on, really sticks her neck out in a great display of Physical Graffitti. Chriss McKowen and sidekick Tara McCarthy (aptly remembered as Double Fun) live up to the fond nicknames of Teaser and the Firecat and always make it back for a Second Helping. This is be- cause they are aware of the fact that Every Good Boy Deserves a Favor. Speaking of good boys, we find Street Legal Marshall Rens asking Are We not Men? and Bat out of Hell Sasha Stoneman answering All in All, you're just a Cheap Thrill. And speaking of cheap thrills, we notice Hank Hall (who is just a Wild and Crazy Guy) having a 262 YEARBOOK STAFF YEARBOOK STAFF 263 Bonnie McCoy, )im McGavin Sheer Heart Attack after experiencing his first French Kiss. Dreamboat Annie Sanford remarks to Totally Hot Bonnie McCoy that Blondes Have More Fun. Nancy Boswell (Blonde that she is) wants to Eat a Peach (or is that eidelfeech?). In any case, Nancy is recovering from her Endless Summer and look- ing forward to more Good Vibrations. But Nancy isn't the only vibrating staffer. Dog and Butterfly Sharon Jones and jay Minnick ( not necessarily in that order) are looking for Darkness on the Edge of Town where Sharon has previously found that her Superman comes off more like The Pretend- er. And One of These Nights some staffer is 264 YEARBOOK STAFF going to run into the Stranger Claire Lewis and simply ask Who Are You? When we come to bigger and better things we come to Karen Linkins who is Bustin' Out of her Silk Degrees. Karen, along with Some Girls like Karen Clarke and Debbi Bragg are out Crusin' on 52nd Street and have noticed that Heroes are Hard to Find. Speaking of hard to find. Sticky Fingers Eric Bauer is off spending A Night at the Opera because he Can't Buy a Thrill anywhere, meanwhile Mark Johnson is gone for A Day at the Races, but then, what can you expect from someone who lives on Abbey Road. Now, for Something New, let's look at Level Headed Doug Allen who wants to Hideaway and wait because There Comes a Time for Pretzel Logic, and he and Karen Linkins have been heard to say that it's “Bigger Than Both of Us. Next in the Showcase we find Captured Angel Kelly Haggerty who has Saturday Night Fever and knows that One of These Nights, in some Honky Chateau, she'll make the Tumbleweed Connection. And connecting with 266 YEARBOOK STAFF YEARBOOK STAFF 267 Gorilla Steve Wheldon, we run into High Tide and Green Grass, or is that just Orgasm. For a Decade, our Dixie Chicken Harry Tuell has been collecting Souvenirs and still carries his Briefcase Full of Blues. Where it comes to blues, the GREN- ADIER staff comes to financial expert Carolyn Scott who is in charge of all the Billion Dollar Babies, but when it comes to babies . . . well, we'll just Let It Be. The staff put in many vigorous weekends all taking place in the Houses of the Holy. Marshall Rens, owner of the house on Shakedown Street, is Tryin' to Get the Feeling back in his arms because Somethings Happening, but it turns out to be Mark Romness and Jim McGavin singing their Song of Joy. Janice Mat- suura remains, hearing nothing but the Sounds of Silence and living on the Dark Side of the Moon. Bonnie McCoy and Anne Sanford (better known as the Ladies of the Canyon) have come So Far in their search for Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy that they now need just One More for the Road. Careless Chris Wilks is off with the Animals and has to Catch a Bull at Four so we will conclude here. This book is the Finale, and towards many things we Don't Look Back. We are prepared to sail on the Wind of Change but we keep these Photographs and Memories be- cause Every Picture Tells a Story and THAT is the Way of the World. 268 YEARBOOK STAFF COMMUNITY ey 0x fo Ov « a v 1000 a 'C DO o- i -• v VN M, VLXQ_ 3“ ' , UeXvVi °cm-e L oo| vieo ) a c fc.
