STUDENT LIFE ©' SacJi’e HawIuns - A reaI hoE dowN This year’s senior class sponsored Sadie Hawkins Dance set off 1977-78 to a very en- thusiastic start. Contary to last year’s dance, which was open to the entire school, this year it returned, once again, to the originial tradi- tion of only senior woman and their dates. Despite an uproar from the junior girls and the task of completing the decorations, every- thing went smoothing. What a cozy sight it was, to see couples moseying arm-in-arm through two rows of luminaries to the “Yorktown Barn,” wel- comed by two smiling jacko-o-lanterns. It was quite a switch to see girls opening car doors for the guys, footing dinner bills, and pulling them onto the dance floor to the fiddlin’ sounds of the Easy Livin' Band. During the course of the dance couples had their photographs taken on the hay- stack, and got hitched by judge Mark Macekura. Other faculty members, like the spirited Mrs. Henkel, added much to the oc- casion. Service clubs, parents and the junior class officers also contributed by making and serv- ing refreshments. Students also stayed after school to help on the superb decorations. The highlight of the evening was the awarding of Daisy Mae and LM’ Abner to Mitze Stoddard and Bruce Buchanan. Many thanks to the Senior Class Officers, and to the chairpersons; Ellen Farrell, Heidi Foglesong, and Robbie Hutton for making Sadie Hawkins a success! Mm STUDENT LIFE PowdERpuFF' SenIors subduE juNioRS SENIOR TEAM JUNIOR TEAM STUDENT LIFE Powderpuff is one girls' sport that receives the recognition it deserves. Consisting of a con- fident senior team and an opposing junior team, it is one of the most popular sports events of the year, since it is open to everyone, and everyone gets to play. After the many practices, the day of the game finally arrived. Girls with the guys football jer- seys, with “beer” or “J” buttons on strolled the halls. Many signs advocating “Senior Superiori- ty” or “Junior Dominance” filled the walls, along with a few sarcastic remarks such as “Ju- nior Jellybrains.” Even though there was some tension, since both teams “accidentally” met at the Rustler Steak House for dinner, while getting psyched for the rough, cold game ahead, there were sur- prizingly no lettuce and tomato throwing fights. The spirit was brought to its culminating peak, the night of the game, by the rowdiness of both teams and the sexy-legged male cheerleaders, who displayed coordination and some really unique moves. The action on the field was organized and very impressive. Besides a few nail claws, some FORCEFUL pushing and a lot of verbal abuse to one another, the game ended with few injuries, and the score: seniors 35, juniors 7. Although there were complaints by both teams members about inaccurate calls made by the referees, the game was, all in all, fair. Both sides were excellently coached by var- sity football players: For the juniors, Roy Ander- son, Jim Leach, Mike Thoms, and Iman Poeraatmadja. For the seniors, Jerry Fishbein, Chris Harry, Bruce Bracco, Doug Malone, and Jim Davis. When the game was over the seniors could be heard going off the field singing, “We Are The Champions . . powdEitpuff ®8 STUDENT LIFE D(0) STUDENT LIFE HoMECOMiNq '77'A iviqliT ii space All of Yorktown, including school alumni, look forward to the most important event of the year, Homecoming. One different as- pect of spirit week was that in- stead of having the traditional football game with rivals W-L, students were encouraged to go to what turned out to be a well attended basketball game against W-L. On Halloween Stellae members dressed-up and visited the children at Arlington Hospital. They decorated the ward and made refreshments. Along with school and community services, the members got together for a number of enjoyable activities. Such as the Zeta-Stellae cook-out, pot-lucks, and trips out to dinner. Besides the usual Zeta activities, including Krispy Kreme doughnut drives, bake sales, and pot luck din- ners, the club tried out some new ideas. The newest of these being Zeta's participation in the WETA telethon, where they spent an evening an- swering telephones on T.V. for Channel 26. At the beginning of the year, Zetans showed their origi- nality by selling pom-poms at football games. They also combined forces to have the first Stellae-Zeta cook out, a roaring success! Zeta still supports football and basketball in the traditional fashion, with locker signs, end-of-the-season din- ners, and pep rally skits. And the men’s locker room and houses were royally decorated before the W-L game in the fall. Zeta, sponsored by Ms. Francis Newhouse, will keep up the good work in the years ahead. CLUBS CLUBS CLUBS Grenadier Staff Wins An Oscar Grenadier Staff prepares for their New York Trip. Geoff Hervey Photographer . CLUBS This year’s Grenadier Staff remembers the great movies from over the y«ars, and has made their own version of That's Entertainment. As we enter the Grenadier office, otherwise refer- red to as The Towering Inferno, we find Heidi Man- danis crying Help! Heidi is on The Paper Chase for copy from Duane Freer, who has just returned from the Planet of the Apes. As we move on in the room, we find The Sex Symbol Mandy Gordon reciting her favorite lines from Willy-Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and wondering if the Kentucky Fried Movie is at all edible. But then, wait just a minute, Margaret Joy has just returned after playing her life long part of Scarlet in Gone With the Wind. Margaret cries out to Bud White, “Honey Child! You Light Up My Life. Bud replies, “Margaret, who doesn't light up your life?” Over in the corner, we find our main features, Heidi Foglesong and Chris Jaws Harry, the couple said to have had a One On One ratio. Sitting at a table, we find Janice Matsuura playing her starring role in Silent Movie. Next to Janice, Pam Maria works diligently to become The Gradu- ate. Now we find Mark Romness, better known as The World's Greatest Lover, looking for his Good- bye Girl. No doubt when he finds her it will be his First Love. Hearing The Sound of Music, Chris Courtney and Anne Sanford are fighting over All the President's Men. Coming on to the scene, we find Semi-Tough Jim “red-necked” McGavin. He starts to tell the staff of the wild weekend he had, saying that he was Uptown Saturday Night, but coming off sounding like he had a Freaky Friday. Making a rare appearance, here comes the staff goof-off Linda Al- varez, looking for a tall, blonde, tan Lifeguard. “You’re not going to find him here,” screams Geoff Godfather Hervey. Geoff, being the faithful staffer that he is says that if he could he would Play it Again Sam. Coming onto the scene now are Linda Whelden and Lisa Purkrabek. Linda is forever Look- ing For Mr. Goodbar, While Lisa typically asks, Which Way Is Up? Sitting all by himself, we see sophomore Terry Sopher, who had a Hard Day's Night. Then Billy Groom looking a bit like Audrey Rose shouts, Earthquake and runs off to the Air- port. Next we come to one of our more experienced staffers Ellen Farrell, who has experienced some Close Encounters over the years. Practicing to be The Cheerleaders, we find Carole “prudence” Pe- core and Chris Radcliffe, playing a typical junior game, Star Wars. Last but not least, we find Robbie Hutton having just returned from The Deep she says, “This must be what The Late Great Planet Earth will look like!” As we all leave the scene we look back on The Way We were and plan our up coming parts in the Exorcist. We all board our Yel- low Submarine and take off for the The Other Side of Midnight. CLUBS CLUBS CLUBS CLUBS CLUBS swing the deal tfalleya. ‘Pxeicrifrtio .
