Remaining With Old Traditions Every year each class tries to mate :tself known by its clever ;deas and Innovations, but often it is the traditions, kept up each year, that make a school known. The Annual College Night this year included over one hundred colleges, Universities, and trade schools. Academic excellence has long been a Yorktown tradition as over 85% of the Senior class con- tinues on to some form of higher education. A traditional rivalry continued on the football field as the Seniors defeated the. Juniors in pov derpuff football to claim the only unbeaten record in school history. The American Field Ser- vice Program, relatively new at Yorktown, proved to be a valuable exchange of international ideas. Bettie Chiosso from Italy was the exchange student here this year, while Ann Stark traveled to Chile as a representative of the Ameri- cans Abroad Program. Chris Feeley was crowned queen as Wynken. Blyken, and Nod, the annual SCA-sponsored Homecom- ing dance. Also SCA-sponsored was the Leadership Conference, co-ordinated this year by Julia Markrich. The conference served to bring together the leaders of a large number of area high schools to discuss the committment of the individual to his society and to himself. Keynote speaker at the event was Art Buchwald. Worth- while traditions such as these make a valuable contribution to classes of the future, as well as those of the present, and to Yorktown High School itself. 6

But With a New Spirit Winning their first Potomac District Cham- pionship, the Yorktown gridmen were backed up by wildly cheering fans and enthusiastic cheerleaders. In basketball, the Patriots de- feated W-L by a score of 56 to 42 for their first victory over the Generals in Yorktown history. Senior scholars again ranked first in Arlington County with 18 students gaining recognition as National Merit Semi-Finalists. Extracurricular activities became increasingly important, as the Club Council roster increased by 23 new clubs. The SCA, under President Tom Urban, tried to involve a large number of students in a wide variety of activities. Among the SCA sponsored events were the Spaghetti Dinner, the Variety Show, and the Student Faculty Game. An innovation this year was the domestic exchange program in which students from Coeburn High School in Coeburn, Vir- ginia, attended Yorktown for a week in the fall and Yorktown students traveled to Coeburn in the spring. The major production of the Drama Department was 'Tiger at the Gates with Cyndy Ellis and Bob Wolpert in the leading roles. Yorktown musicians continued to place high in area choral and instrumental contests. The classes of '68, 69, and '70 have set a standard of enthusiasm, interest, and activity that can serve as a goal for classes of the future.
