Five years later was sunk by a Japanese torpedo attack of Midway Island. The present YORKTOWN, whose keel was originally laid for BON HOMME RICHARD, was commissioned CV-10 in April, 1943. Fate not only played a hand in her naming, but in her reputation as well. YORKTOWN slid down the ways seven minutes early and thereafter became known as an eager ship. Her record in World War II testifies to her determined fighting spirit. After making her first port in rec- ord time, YORKTOWN left Pearl Harbour on August 22, 1944 for her first battle assignment. The sun had not yet risen, nor had the boatswain piped reveille when, her decks cleared 2 f for action. YORKTOWN launched her first strike. Imagine the exhilaration of the battle felt by all as the first planes became airborne-an exhilara- tion that turnedii to remorse as some pilots returned successfully, while others came home crippled or not at all. 1 , 1-I - f.

It is they who are the life- blood of the ship and it is they who create rather than observe her history. YORK- TOWN sails the Pacific today as before, and her men share the same experiences as their 1943 counterparts. ln so doing, they write new chapters in a history as gallant and distinguished as ever recorded by any ship of the U.S. Navy. The very name itself is as old as the country which she serves. YORK- TOWN- the battle marking the defeat of the British in 1781 and the beginning of a new nation, the 16-gun sloop of war which sailed with the African Squadron from 1839 to 1850, the gunboat commis- sioned in 1889 which saw action in both the Spanish American Mwar and World War I, and the carriers whose men, through sweat and spirit, shaped the events of World War I1 and the lives of generation thereafter. 1 U. Her men were justly proud when YORKTOWN returned to the West, Coast in August, 1944, for on her superstructure were stenciled over 400 Japanese flags. For her men it was a picturesque adventure and they still had plenty of fighting spirit left for another tour. ' In October 1944, YORKTOWN was underway again. After brief stopover in Pearl Harbour, and Ulithe, she steamed into the very heart of Japanese power. In February 1945, YORKTOWN launched a surprise attack on Tokyo itself.
