William L. Bennett Captainls Message: Commanding the YORKTOWN through her twenty-fifth anniversary year has been a great experience for me. Long hours and hard work were required by all hands while preparing the Fighting Ladyw for sea and then sailing on our 1968 WestPac cruise. We accomplished both successfully only by working together as a team. It has taken everyone,s efforts for the YORKTOWN to maintain her constant vigil as a potent Ngrey diplomat for peace on the Western Pacific. Through our efforts, the YORKTOWN has retained an important role on the U.S. Navy teamg the greatest Naval force ever assembled on this globe. Only by maintaining this advantage can we protect world freedom and safeguard our American way of life. 25 earn wifh .7lze openly On this, the Silver Anniversary of the Fighting Lady, one asks not for a regur- gitation of the Quartermaster's log, but for the answer to the question, '6What makes YORKTOWN's story significantffn To this there is but one reply: the men who sail her. It is they who are the life- blood of the ship and it is they who create rather than observe her history. YORK- TOWN sails the Pacific today as before, and her men share the same experiences as their 1943 counterparts. ln so doing, they write new chapters in a history as gallant and distinguished as ever recorded by any ship of the U.S. Navy. The very name itself is as old as the country which she serves. YORK- TOWN- the battle marking the defeat of the British in 1781 and the beginning of a new nation, the 16-gun sloop of war which sailed with the African Squadron from 1839 to 1850, the gunboat commis- sioned in 1889 which saw action in both the Spanish American Mwar and World War I, and the carriers whose men, through sweat and spirit, shaped the events of World War I1 and the lives of generation thereafter. 1 U. Five years later was sunk by a Japanese torpedo attack of Midway Island. The present YORKTOWN, whose keel was originally laid for BON HOMME RICHARD, was commissioned CV-10 in April, 1943. Fate not only played a hand in her naming, but in her reputation as well. YORKTOWN slid down the ways seven minutes early and thereafter became known as an eager ship. Her record in World War II testifies to her determined fighting spirit. After making her first port in rec- ord time, YORKTOWN left Pearl Harbour on August 22, 1944 for her first battle assignment. The sun had not yet risen, nor had the boatswain piped reveille when, her decks cleared 2 f for action. YORKTOWN launched her first strike. Imagine the exhilaration of the battle felt by all as the first planes became airborne-an exhilara- tion that turnedii to remorse as some pilots returned successfully, while others came home crippled or not at all. 1 , 1-I - f. P--Mi---M But this first, raid left Marcus Island' a smoking shambles and the men proved to themselves that they were ready to fight. Following Marcus raid came successful strikes against Wake, the Cilberts, Kwajelein and Wjote Atolls. YORKTOWN dealt devastating blows t0v Ja- pans air and sea power in the Philippines, Truk, Guam, and at the Marianas Turkey Shootv where hundreds ofilapg- anese planes were shot down in a single day. Her men were justly proud when YORKTOWN returned to the West, Coast in August, 1944, for on her superstructure were stenciled over 400 Japanese flags. For her men it was a picturesque adventure and they still had plenty of fighting spirit left for another tour. ' In October 1944, YORKTOWN was underway again. After brief stopover in Pearl Harbour, and Ulithe, she steamed into the very heart of Japanese power. In February 1945, YORKTOWN launched a surprise attack on Tokyo itself. Again, she met with great success and sustained few casualties. N 4 l l I li 1 i l l yr 13 By now the crew of the Fighting Lady must have felt invincible. They, had participated in numerous actions and had repelled repeated air and sub attacks by luck, maneuvering, and a constant flow ot hot lead from theiir5uns.t 18 March 1945, the spell was broken. lronically, a minor skirmish dealt YORKTOWN her sole injury of the war. Her log reports: Q 1500 Third Hludyw came out of the clouds dead ahead and dropped awbomb that landed on the starboardisignal bridge, passed through that deck and down through 20 MMM' battery number seven, exploding alongside near the second deck. On August 15, 1945, the Commander-ln-Chief, Pacific Fleet ordered a cessation of all offensive operations and one episode in the life of a great fighting ship was brought to a close. It is indicative of YORKTOWN's spirit that even during the rage of battle there had been comical moments. One was the landing of Marine pilots. Three Marines had become lost during a 30,000 feet air patrol over Okinawa and had wandered several hundred miles out to sea. They were almost out of fuel when YORK- TOWN picked up their distress calls. Though none had ever Fniade ia carrier' landing they were directed to awsafeireturn aboard. One Marine who made a perfect recovery asked afterwards, What was that man doing waving those pallets back therew? He was quickly an- swered by a sailor who said ubrother, he's the Landing Signal Officer, and he was giving you a wave-offln In January, 1947, YORKTOWN was de- comissioned and attached to the Pacific Re- serve Fleet. Five years later she was recom- inissioned CVA-10 and pounded Communist supply lines until the end of the Korean conflict. Modernized several times since Korea, YORKTOWN received her latest major modifi- cation in 1958, when she was configured to Carry out a new mission as the nucleus of a Hunter-Killer ASW Force and was redesignated CVS-10. She has made several cruises to the Western Pacific supporting her country,s policy in the Far East. With the end of overt hostilities, one might assume YORKTOWN's role in history is ended and the days of ships of the line are over. The Fighting Lady has made eight cruises to the Far East since Korea. She has represented America in the Straits of Formosa, Sea of Ja- pan, and the Tonkin Gulf. She has saved lives and she has taken them. And her men sail to- day experiencing the same fears and joy as did those who sailed her in World War II. It is they who keep YORKTOWN alive. 'Q I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I The history of YORKTOWN is written by the men who sail her. lt is the sweating boatswains as he heaves in line late at night, it is the exhausted airman who, after hours on the flight deck, slumps in some corner of the island to find what sleep he can, it is the gunner, the cook, the fireman, and the baker. lt is they who give life to the YORKTOWN as she stands ever ready. The Yorktown, an antisubmarine carrier, ,was en route across the Pacific to replace the Kearsarge in the South China Sea. But it conti- nued due west and is expected to reach the Sea of Japan soon. various auxiliary supply and support ships. Pentagon officials de- clined to comment on the movement of . the York- town or the strength of her screen. An antisubma- rine carrier normally is accompanied by an escort force of four to six de- stroyers. At least three other combat-type escorts, in- cluding the new nuclear- powered frigate Truxtun, are with the Enterprise task group. Not Attack Planes The nuclear-powered at- t a c k carrier Enterprise has a complement of 80 to 100 airplanes. The smaller, 31,000-ton Yorktown nor- mally carries 28 airplanes 22 Sec.
