Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Dolbey Mr. and Mrs. David J. Evans Mrs. Mary Goodwin Mr. and Mrs. J. Paul Jones Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Jones Mr. and Mrs. Edgar L. Morgan Mr. and Mrs. M. Rauch Mr. and Mrs. Emil Schnelle Mr. and Mrs. Durbin Swick DEDICATION We, the Class of 1960, to show our appreciation, wish to dedicate this 1960 Talisman to a man who has given generously and cheerfully his time and efforts. He always cooperated to the utmost that could be asked of any person. This man is Walter Phelps, the school custodian. Walter ' s efforts could be seen every morning when we came to school, the rooms were spotless and no dust was left to be seen. He spent many hours in the evenings waiting for our activities to end, and not one of us heard him complain. While we were away for our summer vacations, Walter was busy repairing those battle scars we left there the previous term. To you Walter Phelps, please accept this dedication we give you with our deepest sincerity, because you have earned it. Again we say, Thank you, Walter. As a tribute to the TALISMAN, we the class of 1960 would like to use as our foreword the editorial written by Leland Ross for the first TALISMAN, published in 1924. As the last class to graduate from the York Local High School, the Seniors of 1960 have put forth great effort to pub- lish this TALISMAN. When we consider that high school days are coming to a close it is with bright hopes for the future yet not without profound regret. Therefore it is our wish that in years to come each page will act as a charm to help recall those finest associations at York. HISTORY OF THE I960 SENIOR CLASS In September of 1956, 22 green freshmen started high school at York Local High School. Miss Vera Dull, Home Economics teacher, was the class ' s faculty sponsor. The class started earning money for that class trip which would come in three years. That year the class sponsored a cake raffle at one of the basketball games. Numerous class parties were held during that year. On the last day as freshmen, the class took a trip to Zanes Caverns, near Bellefontaine, Ohio. Twenty-one members started the Sophomore year, and again Miss Dull was the faculty sponsor. That year the class served the St. Valentine ' s Day Dinner and sponsored a cake raffle tetween halves of one of the basketball games. The class was very busy during the Junior year. Miss Monica Mushinskl, English and French teacher, was the class faculty sponsor. That November, the class presented Shy Guy, a three act comedy, very capably directed by Miss Mushlnski. In December, 1958, the class served the traditional Christmas Dinner, assisted by their faithful mothers. On May 8, 1959, the class enter- tained the Senior class by giving the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. The last day of the Junior year, the class participated in the school field day and that evening enjoyed a picnic supper and drive-in movie. The Senior year had been long awaited by the class. Mrs. Lucretia Brandt, English and French teacher, was the faculty sponsor. Some of the fund raising projects were magazine sales, basketball game concessions, carnival, co-sponsored with the publications workshoppers, and the 1960 Talisman. On May 21, the Junior class entertained us by serving the annual Junior-Senior Banquet at the Clemens Building, Lima, Ohio. Finally the much anticipated moment arrived, commencement. Two days later, the class left on the trip to New York and Washington D. C. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Jones accompanied the class as chaperones. Now the class is no longer one unit as it was from 1956 till 1960. Some of the members may return for the Alumni Banquets, while others may never have the opportunity to do so. But the class will never forget the knowledge and enjoyment received while it attended the red brick schoolhouse, one-quarter mile south of Jonestown, Ohio. College student ALUMNI SNAPS f 4 %• -. _ _ ,. : f jv : J| 1 1 SCHOOL HISTORY York School, as it is today, is a combination of ten schools, nine country and one village. The town school was Venedocia. The country district schools and their locations were PAINTER, northwest; ROSS, west central; BEVINGTON, Southwest; WHITFIELD, north central; JONESTOWN, central; MOSS, south central; AUGLAIZE, north east; PUGH, east; and ELGIN, south east. PUGH school closed for lack of students, and the few remaining students were divided between Venedocia, Jonestown, and Elgin. Painter school burned, so a bus hauled students from PAINTER district to ROSS district. In the fall of 1922 York School was opened with nine school busses to transport students. All the drivers were high school boys. There were only three grades in high school that year, but in 1923-24 the senior class was added. The first class to graduate, that of ' 24, graduated three boys and four girls. Of the 36 graduating classes, the year 1940 was the largest with 30 students. The years 1924 and 1957 were the smallest with 7 each. The school was designed by Thomas McLaughlin and Associates. The board in 1922 was composed of S. A. McGee, president; W.D.Alspaugh, vice president; O. B. Waltz, Dean Clippinger, J. P. Jones, and J. W. Reese, clerk. Seven superintendents have served at York in these 36 years. The first was J. W. Reese, followed by Henry Hurr, J. A. Hickman, F. A. White, D. L. Buchanan, D. E. McDonald, and A. W. Fishbaugh. Starting the 1960-61 school term, York, Hoaglin Jackson, and Van Del (Ridge and Middle- point) are joining together to form the new consolidated school, Lincolnview. The high school students will go to Ridge, Junior High students will be divided between York and Hoaglin Jackson. The elementary will go to their respective schools. So ends the history of YORK SCHOOL, but throughout the years it will hold many memories for each and every alumni. ; ' ;: WS ; :; - « wagott lifee this 1 ' • ' ' J ' ' ' ADVERTISING JONESTOWN GRAIN AND FEED COMPANY ■ ■m a • • i Purina Chows G r i nd i ng Mix i ng Shel 1 i ng C 1 ean i ng Grain - Feed - Seed - Fertilizer Phone Venedoc i a 2 1 85 Jonestown Ohio Compl iments of CONTINENTAL CAN COMPANY Van Wert Ohio Manufacturers of FIBER SHIPPING DRUMS a ;; SAVINGS TO POLICYHOLDERS SINCE I876 PROTECT Your Property By Having Adequate Insurance PROTECT Your Future By Seeing Us About A Job CENTRAL MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY Van Wert Ohio Good Luck to the Class of I960 PRECISION MACHINE PRODUCTS Venedoc la Ohio Best Wishes from HAROLD ' S BARBER SHOP Venedoc i a Ohio For Your Groceries Come to COURTNEY 1 S I .
