HISTORY On the first Monday in September, 1944, Mrs. Leis, first grade teacher of York School, greeted 19 eager-eyed boys and girls out of which 11 are now graduating in 1956, After duly learning how to get along with other children, our abc’s, how to count, and the routine of school life, Mrs. Leis turned us over to Mrs, Edith Jones for the second grade, Under Mrs, Jones’s guidance we began to write and do arithmetic problems, Apparently part of Mrs. Leis’s training was forgotten because the momentous first fight occurred between Martha and Ruth Ann, Nine months later and we were now ready for the third grade under Mrs, Nagel. Leota Long joined us this year, Mrs, Heffner, our fourth grade teacher lost two pupils, Louise Merickle and Anne, and gained one, Bill Feasby, this year, We were beginning to feel grown up as we were now fifth graders under the direction of Mr. D. Edwin Jones who had us also in the sixth grade, Anne must have missed York for she returned to us in the fifth grade, Bill and Leota Long left us in the sixth grade. Remember how our education was furthered by the jokes - - - - and, oh the whacks of D. Edwin’s paddle. Now we are grown up! We moved upstairs this year to the Junior High. Mr. George was our sponsor, Remember our first hayride, Was it really cold! Oh well, we still had fun. We began our eighth grade with Mrs. Jones sponsoring us, What a thrill when we received those eighth grade diplomas! At last high school. With Mrs. Mitchell as our sponsor, we began thinking of ways to make money for our class trip right away, This year we had charge of the noon movies, Phyllis Ross came from Mendon to help us. Under the guidance of Miss Ragon in our Sophomore year, we had the Valentine Dinner to further our money making projects, This is the year we selected our class rings. At first every Sophomore proudly wore their new rings but where were half of them three months later? Miss Ragon continued with us through our Junior year, We learned the fundamentals of publishing a paper, the ‘‘Spotlight.’’ Our class play ‘‘Yours Until Tomorrow” was the big success of the year, Richard McCoy leftus. We had the Christmas Dinner this year along with the Junior- Senior Reception, Miss Vera Dull came to guide us in our Senior year, What a busy, busy year, We gave our class play ‘‘The Darling Brats’’ on April 13, Superstition points to the thirteenth as unlucky but our play was still a huge success, Our Baccalaureate was May 20 and we graduated on May 25. We topped off our year with a trip to Chicago, Our 12 years of school are over but the memories of these school years will never be for- gotten,
