She taught fair play and always practiced what she taught. We hope that she accepts this dedication as our thanks to her, TABLE of CONTENTS © FACULTY e ° e oe ° e o e . e ° e. e e ° ° Superintendents School Board Teachers SENIORS ee ee ee @ o e . ° ° e e e e e e e e . . e Seniors History Prophecy Will UNDERCLASSMEN . «. « « ee © 2 © @ © © 2 8 oe Juniors Sophomores Freshmen First to Eighth grades ° e e e e e ° e e e e e e ° e 5 Secretary Cooks and Janitor Bus Drivers e . On the first Monday in September, 1944, Mrs. Leis, first grade teacher of York School, greeted 19 eager-eyed boys and girls out of which 11 are now graduating in 1956, After duly learning how to get along with other children, our abc’s, how to count, and the routine of school life, Mrs. Leis turned us over to Mrs, Edith Jones for the second grade, Under Mrs, Jones’s guidance we began to write and do arithmetic problems, Apparently part of Mrs. Leis’s training was forgotten because the momentous first fight occurred between Martha and Ruth Ann, Nine months later and we were now ready for the third grade under Mrs, Nagel. Leota Long joined us this year, Mrs, Heffner, our fourth grade teacher lost two pupils, Louise Merickle and Anne, and gained one, Bill Feasby, this year, We were beginning to feel grown up as we were now fifth graders under the direction of Mr. D. Edwin Jones who had us also in the sixth grade, Anne must have missed York for she returned to us in the fifth grade, Bill and Leota Long left us in the sixth grade. Remember how our education was furthered by the jokes - - - - and, oh the whacks of D. Edwin’s paddle. Now we are grown up! We moved upstairs this year to the Junior High. Mr. George was our sponsor, Remember our first hayride, Was it really cold! Oh well, we still had fun. We began our eighth grade with Mrs. Jones sponsoring us, What a thrill when we received those eighth grade diplomas! At last high school. With Mrs. Mitchell as our sponsor, we began thinking of ways to make money for our class trip right away, This year we had charge of the noon movies, Phyllis Ross came from Mendon to help us. Under the guidance of Miss Ragon in our Sophomore year, we had the Valentine Dinner to further our money making projects, This is the year we selected our class rings. At first every Sophomore proudly wore their new rings but where were half of them three months later? Miss Ragon continued with us through our Junior year, We learned the fundamentals of publishing a paper, the ‘‘Spotlight.’’ Our class play ‘‘Yours Until Tomorrow” was the big success of the year, Richard McCoy leftus. We had the Christmas Dinner this year along with the Junior- Senior Reception, Miss Vera Dull came to guide us in our Senior year, What a busy, busy year, We gave our class play ‘‘The Darling Brats’’ on April 13, Superstition points to the thirteenth as unlucky but our play was still a huge success, Our Baccalaureate was May 20 and we graduated on May 25. We topped off our year with a trip to Chicago, Our 12 years of school are over but the memories of these school years will never be for- gotten, SENIOR CLASS PLAY Cynthia Darling, (Eileen Price) who supports her young orphan sister Babs (Ruth Ann Welker) and brother Hank (Larry Welker), is greatly perturbed because Aunt Agatha, (Evelyn Perez) a comely young widow, lavishes expensive gifts upon them and is spoiling them rotten, Cynthia determines to get Agatha’s influence away from the Darling children (who, by the way, are far from darling--they are perfect little hellions!) by marrying her off to Cynthia’s boss, Appleton Crabb, (David Welker) an irascible old bachelor. Agatha is romantically interested in John HenryJ udd,(John Linton), an impoverished cowboy-rancher, with whom she corresponds but hasn’t seen since childhood. Tess (Ann Overholt) also is determined her aunt shall marry the wealthy Crabb, and she inveigles Spike, (Richard Morris) her boy friend to masquerade as Judd is instantly squashed! But young Hank and Babs are equally determined Aunt Agatha shall marry the cowboy, because they are crazy to live on his Arizona ranch, The tricks these two brats play upon Crabb and Agatha in order to make them hate each other kept the audience screaming with mirth, They give Crabb a synthetic case of ‘‘B.O.” by hiding Limburger cheese upon his person, They touch Agatha up with “Fun Fest Itching Liquid’? and make Crabb believe she has the seven-year itch. How Agatha, with the assistance of handsome Jack, the gardener, turns the tables on Tess, Hank and Babs! Cynthia’s boyfriend, Rod Vinton, (Don Williams) and the colored cook Junebug, (Ruth Thatcher) also provide the audience with a festival of laughter. The play’s over. Smile everybody! How about some SMACK! All around the Lima Bean Loaf? mulberry Lush. I'm John Henry Judd from Arizona, Iam, Iam. Smear him good, Mrs. Maurer. WILL We, the Senior Class of 1956 of York High School, having been of sound mind and in perfect physical health, do hereby make our last will and testament, To the Juniors we will our ability to throw erasers straight and to get along with teachers. To the Sophomores we will our ability to get to school on time and to stay out of trouble, To the Freshmen we will our superiority in athletics and our friendly dispositions. To the teachers we will our worn out books, torn up erasers, and all other facilities which have helped us in securing our education. Realizing that the members of our class have special talents, we wish to make the following personal bequeaths. Ruth Thatcher, will my ability of blushing all the time to Sydney Krugh, I, John Linton, will six inches of my height to Daniel Evans. Martha Dolbey, will my ability todo mischievous deeds and get away with it to Jean Ann Larry Welker, will my shyness to Doyce Rice, Eileen Price, will my ability to be the only girl in advanced Algebra to Leora Wilkins. David Welker, will my ability to skip fourth period study hall to Mark Welker. Anne Overholt, will my busy Senior year to anyone who can stand it. Richard Morris, will my ability to stay out late and keep out of trouble to Bob Patterson, Evelyn Perez, will my cheerleading ability to Jane Lloyd. Don Williams, will my bashfulness to Roger Neate. Ruth Ann Welker, will my position as Senior class treasurer to any Junior who wants it, PROPHECY ‘ A Cruise into the Future’’ Most of the Seniors have been wondering about their futures. Since I have been granted the ‘‘World in a Crystal Ball,’’ I will fortell the 1956 Graduates’ Futures and reveal to them some of my most amazing events. I look in the Crystal Ball and before mel behold a room full of noisy girls. At the front is their teacher, Eileen Price, one of the best commercial teachers York has ever had. But wait! The scene is changing. Now] see a wide open field with 2000 head of cattle owned by the greatest farmer in northwestern Ohio, Richard Morris. Now we turn to the east and there in the sky is an airplane, Yes, it is Larry Welker. He is on his way to Alaska at last to become an ambassador there, Back to the states and to California. There I see Evelyn Perez, who is now a dancing in- structor, Evelyn is now teaching a student her favorite dance, the ROCK AND ROLL. Another change of scenery and I see Martha Dolbey in New York at last, She is secretary to Arthur Godfrey and some times appears on his many television programs, The Crystal Ball shows me a big crowd clapping and yelling. The top star, John Linton, made two more points which won the basketball game for his Fort Wayne Pistons. It also informs me that David Welker is now the greatest electrical engineer in the state of Indiana. He receives a salary of $500 a week. He has bought four new Oldsmobiles with the money he has made, Anne Overholt as everyone knows, is married and living in Cowlick, Iowa, She and her husband (a member of the 1955 Senior Class) live on a 3000 acre farm. Don Williams is experimenting on a newprivate airplane, He hopes it will take him to Mars, Hurry and get it finished Don, we want to go too] And last but not least, Iseeabig crowd of girls and boys in a circle, of course, in the middle ‘is Ruth Ann Welker. She is signing autographs for her many fans, She co-stars with Tab Hunter in ‘‘Queen of the Fan Clubs.”’ I must leave the Crystal Ball now and go back to my duties as Interior Decorator, I am now redecorating the Empire State Building. 17 TALISMAN STAFF BOTTOM ROW: Eileen Price, Ruth Ann Welker, Anne Overholt, Evelyn Perez, Miss Dull.
