Of these l7, who were under the direction of Miss Ruth Johnson, 12 have completed their schooling at York. And so the process began by which these students were to develop into the well-adjusted young people that we find them today. Having passed through the first grade, and feeling quite grown-up, we en- tered the second grade under the direction of Miss Hyde. Remember when Carol had a crush on Fenton Bagley? Into the third grade, and we began to learn the three R's under the super- vision of Mrs. Jones. Remember when Kay stuck her foot into the aisle and tripped Stanley Dee? And what was Stanley's reaction! During the fourth year, under the guidance of Mrs. Wright, we learned the true meaning of order in a classroom Remember the time when part of the class went on a hike, but the rest of them had to stay bhind because they missed a spelling word? Jane Swygart and Joann Evans joined us as permanent classmates during our dfth year. During this grade and the sixth grade we had Mr. D. Edwin Jones as a teacher. None of us will forget how we had to stand in line for him to use the dreaded hickory stick. We really had to begin studying in earnest when we entered the seventh and eighth grade under the leadership of Mrs. Pugh. If we didn't study hard, there was 'always plenty of room for use to stand around the wall. We plunged headlong into our Freshman year, unaware that we knew so little. It was Mrs. Shackelford's understanding guidance that brought us safely through this trying time. Mr. Shade was our sponsor during the Sophomore year, when we were be- coming more familiar with the high school routine. At the end of this year we took a very enjoyable trip in to Southern Ohio. We were again fortunate to have Mrs. Shackelford as our directo'r during our Junior year. We experienced publishing the Spotlight and gave a very successful play Grandad Steps Out. But the highlight of the year was honoring the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom. The climax to this process was reached in our Senior year, when, under the excellent direction of Mrs. Morris, we presented the class play Quiet Everybody, 'published the Talisman, and made preparations for the trip to which we are now looking forward. Our plans are to visit Gettsyburg, Washington, D. C., New York City and Niagra Falls. Kay Galloway Class Will We, the Senior class, of York School, having been allowed to reside here for a period of time under our favorite parent, the faculty, feeling it is our duty to surrender the privileges we have thus far enjoyed, being fully convinced that we are of sound mind, publish and declare this our last will and testament. FIRST: To our beloved successors the Juniors, we will our studious characteristics and good manners. SECOND: To the Sophomores, we will our good intentions and quiet disposition. THIRD: To the Freshmen, we will our good grades and dependability. FOURTH: To the school, we leave the monuments of our school days, such as: broken furniture, iinger-smudged walls, second-hand gum deposits, initialed desks, and well-worn books. Senior Class Prophecy DearJane, On one of my recent singing engagements I met Stanley Welker, one of our old classmates. He told me that he is now a successful actor on Broadway. He also informed me that his sister, Mary Jane, though happily married, is conducting her 120 piece string band. He also receives letters and calls from our other classmates. Some of his reports were that Kay Galloway uses most of her time giving music lessons to her 110 students, and yet keeps up her end of the household duties for her family. Hugh Owen Pugh is now a Professor in the Ohio Northern college and in his spare time cares for his 3000 acre farm. David Owen Evans has made a career of Medicine and keeps in shape by playing baseball for the Venedocia Sluggers. Joann Evans enjoys her work as a nurse in the Dayton Hospital. She is David Evans' head Surgical Nurse. Jerry Mead has reached the position of an Admiral in the Navy. He is in charge of a Heet composed of 96 ships. Mary Platt is now a successful businesswoman. She is president of the Platt Cosmetic Co.', She also keeps house for her family in Detroit. Bill Hughes is a successful business dairyman. He supplies the 'whole area of Venedocia with his products. You know Bill was always going to be a bachelor, well he's stuck to it. Mariyn Lewis is now a professianal artist. She has painted pictures of great renoun. They hang in the Museum in Washington, D. C. She also has quite a time raising her 12 children. Byron Nolan is now a famous basketball player. He averages 62 points a game. That's really something! Remember how I used to say he'd make a good basketball player? I hope to see him play in the near future in Madison Square Garden when I open this fall at the Metropolitan Opera House. Have you heard that Vernon Boley is now manager of the Cin- icinnati Red Socks. His team has won the Pennant for the last four years. Carol Phelps is now a beautician in California, she does most the Actress's hair styling. She also is happy in wedded bliss. Have you heard Mary Helen Davies' latest radio program? She delivered a speech to the Security Council of the United Nation's entitled, f My Country and What It Means To Me. The President has recommended Lher to be a Representative of the United States to speak in foreign countries. Dick Crowe has risen to the rank of Captain in the Army. He has ydeveloped quite a side-lineg he does typing for the Privates. How do you like your job as a secretary to the famous Journalist, Mal Hoyle? I hear you are quite successful at it. Do you enjoy all the 'globe trotting your job requires? As for me, I'm singing with Vic Damone now. I travel quite a bit, 'but my home is still in good old Ohio. Edward Homey, returning from a hard day's work at the store demands peace and quietf, because Jonathan Sedgewick, big- shot of the Grocers' Association, is coming to see his plans for a new plastic method of canning, and if Sedgewick likes them we'll be sitting prettyf' Sedgewick is eccen- tric, has a phobia against bugs, insects, and animals of all sorts. When the three Homey off-springs, their pals, and eccentric bug-collecting uncle, a pie-making lady next door who adores the professor, a distracted Italian zoo keeper, and escaped lion, a maid who would just as soon live in an ant hill,', a party, and a dozen and one other things get under way, Mrs. Homey tries to get the peace and quietl' her husband demands, but it's a big order. However, just short of wrecking both Mr. Homey's invention and his mind, the mix-up turns out amicably enough. Standing-Back Row - Left to Right: Martha Yan Tiinnn, R+-eil Linton. A. members. We participated in many activities. We had boys at the state judging contests at Columbus and they were Richard Krugh, Roger Price, John Dolbey, Hugh Jones, Clark Shaffer, and Wayne Gamble. We went down for shop, general livestock. and dairy con- tests. Those who were delegates to the F. F. A. Convention were Wayne Gamble and Richard Krugh. This year we plan to send delegates to the State Convention and the Judging contest. Two boys attended F. F. A. camp, they were Richard Krugh and Kenneth Boley. The outstanding event was our banquet. W'e had 70 people attend one of the finest banquets we ever put on. The speaker of the evening was John Leonard of Van Wert. He is an outstanding man in F. F. A. work, having taught at the Marsh Foundation for a number of years. At this banquet two people were made Honorary members, Mrs. Leota Boley and Mr. Wayne Ries. Mrs. Boley has put 7 boys though Vo. Ag, and F. F. A. This is an outstanding achievement. She was awarded a gold F, F. A. pin. Mr. Ries was recognized for his Welding School for the boys and for setting up Field Trips. Our motto for the year was chosen soon after school started. It is, If the elevator to success isn't running take the stairs. At Christmas time We exchanged names, and played many enjoy- able games, and were served refreshments. The party was at the home of Joann Evans. Other events during the year were the annual Spring Dance, our free night at the Y. W. C. A., and very interesting club meetings. We Wish to express our thanks to Mrs. Thompson, and Mrs. Vande- mark for their excellent guidance during the year. Music Department This year the Music department was under the direction of Mrs. Ralston, The year ended with marked success as the girls sextette received a superior rating as did soloists Ellen Price, Jerry Mead and David Evans. For the work in the seventh and eighth grades Mrs. Ralston used two and three part songs. They also studied the great composers and the themes from their music, learned the names of contem- porary musicians, and studied about the instruments of the orchestra. They also took part in the Christmas prog1'11111, and the girls sang with the high school girls for BHCC2llFll1'1'C21tC. Everyone helped make il scrape book for the fair. The music schedule for the year was 21 busy one. The various groups appear- ing many times during the year - Christ- mas Prograln, at the County Festivals, the Minstrel, the District and State Contests. Band The newly organized York School Band has had a very active year. Its members participated in the Christmas program and played for several basketball games. The band went to Willshire and took part in the annual County Band Music Festival which consisted of playing several numbers by itself and also with the 250 piece massed county band. The instrumental and vocal groups combined talents and presented a Spring Music program. The band portion of the program consisted of instrumental solos and ensemble numbers besides selections from the full band. The band has been completely outfitted with new uniforms and is looking forward to success in the future. They were furnished by the Band Mothers. Mr. Atkinson took Mrs. Armstrongs place during Christmas vacation and we hardly noticed the change. Standing'-Back ROW - L. to E.: Evelyn Vert-Z.
