A child's plaything for an hour, Its pretty tricks we try For that or for a longer space,- Then tire, and lay it by. But I knew one that to itself All seasons could control, That would have mock'd the sense of pain Out of a grieved soul. Thou straggler into loving arms, Young climber-up of knees, When I forget thy thousand Ways Then life and all shall cease! -by Mary Lamb fvs 'll' L. Senior History September 11, 1939, 17 bright eyed youngsters entered the doors of York School to acquire some knowledge. We were under the direction of Miss Ruth Johnson. Of the 17 that started four attended all twelve years at York and are graduating with the class of 1951. The four are: Gloria Jean George, Edward Jones, Roger Heath and Ruth Ellen Davies. Jane Overholt attended all twelve years except the Freshman Year. John Ober- litner came into our class during this year. Our second grade was under the direction of Miss Marguerite Evans. Harold Boley entered our midst this year. Our third grade was under the direction of Miss Margaret Hyde. It was that year that some of us learned the meaning of a corner! Mrs. Mabel Wright directed our fourth grade in school. It was this year that we learned the art of sewing. Remember our heart shaped hot pads and table cloth and napkins. Mildred Gamble joined us during this year. Mr. D. Edwin Jones taught us the three R's in tune of the hickory Stick in the fifth and sixth grades. It was during those years that Gloria and Harold liked to play post office! George Swygart joined us in the sixth grade. We were under the direction of Mrs. Emerald Pugh in our seventh and eighth grades. Remember how hard we had to study or if we didn't there was always the noon hour! Carolyn Wise joined our class in the eighth grade. We entered high school under the direction of Mrs. Lois Shackelford. We were given the impression of inferiority by the seniors! It was this year that Jane Overholt went to Mendon. We gave our first play during this year entitled The Trysting Place . Rex Shaffer entered our midst this year. Mr. McConaha was our sponsor during the Sophomore year. It was during that year that Harold ripped his pants and used Carolyn's thread to sew them up. Carolyn showed her singing ability in the operetta that year by playing the part of Lizzette. Miss Helen Breese was our director for our Junior Year. All of our class had a part in the play, which was entitled, The Whistling Parrot. It was directed by Mr. Shade. Remember all the parties we had when we had play practice. Mrs. Shackelford helped us with the prom which was in the gymnasium. Mrs. Morris was our sponsor during our last year in High School. We presented our play entitled, The Clay's the Thing, on November 10. Our commencement will be on the 22nd of May. Our speaker will be Elmer Hinkle. We are happy that our schedule for our class trip has been confirmed. We will leave Van Wert on the 27th day of May for an eleven day tour of Gettysburg, Washington, New York, and Niagara. I see our old classmates every once in a while so I thought I would write you a letter and tell you all about them. You have really fooled all of us. Remember how you always said you were never going to get married? I imagine being the head bookkeeper at American Airlines and being a successful housewife keeps you busy. Mildred Gamble, after four years of college and several years of teach- ing is Director of Home Demonstration Agents of Ohio. She enjoys her work very much. Gloria Jean George is happily married and is busy between her home and Bowling Green University where she is a Prof. in Elementary Teaching. Ruth Ellen Davies has really been busy also. She's Decca's new singing star and is also secretary for the National Democrat Headquarters in Wash- ington, D. C. As you know I used to like to draw funny characters, well I'm now doing sketches for Walt Disney, but my main job is simply keeping house. As for the boys: Roger Heath has served twenty years in the Navy and he decided to retire on his pension of S59,409,876,564,536,465.09IA a month. He is another of our classmates living in wedded bliss. John Oberlitner was also in the service, in fact that's where he made his first million. Of course you can guess what he did, he realized his fondest dream, and moved to Greenland. George Swygart and Rex Shaffer are partners who have been pros- pecting in Canada and Alaska. They spend all their spare time trapping and hunting. Harold Boley is farming his small 1,000,000,000 acre farm and just loafs in his spare time, and plays basketball to keep in shape. Edward Jones is perhaps one of the most famous members of our class. He is the star of the Ball-Hoggs basketball team. Already this season he has made 12593V4 points. It is said he shoots at the basket every time he gets the ball, and very seldom misses. Well, it is time for me to close. We used to think time went so slowly, we'd never get out of school, and now it seems time just flies by. Write soon. Your old classmate, ' Carolyn Senior Class Play The C1ay's The Thing Jack and Luke, two happy-go-lucky college youths, conceive the brilliant idea of dressing up their chum, Jerry, as a woman and entering him in a national beauty contest, not only to Win the prize money, but to launch the sale of a beauty clay which Jack has concocted. So Jerry, who is clever at female impersonations, enters upon a wild and perilous career as a professional beauty and, posing as Luke's sister, soon has the two in hot water up to their ears. Descending upon the summer home of Jack's uncle, a manufacturer of cosmetics, to whom Jack hopes to sell his beauty clay, the boys stumble into an impromptu house party that turns out to be a wasp's nest. They meet a theatrical magnate who promptly falls in love with the masquerading Jerry, whereas that harassed youth has lost his heart to J ack's sister, who is impersonating a maid. The ridiculous tangle is eventually straightened out, but not until it has been complicated even more so with the arrival of a poetic and henpecked capitalist, Clayton Parmer and his wife. The arrival of Jessie Stewart, another beauty contestant does not help matters because Jack loses his heart to her. Things are eventually straightened out when Dudley Briggs offers Jack a contract for his beauty clay and Thomas Deems offers Jerry a contract for a part in his new theatrical production.
