Lewis. Those we love truly never die Though year by year the sad memorial wreath, A ring and flowers, types of life and death, Are laid upon their graves. For death the pure life saves, And life all pure is love: and love can reach From Heaven to earth, and nobler lessons teach Than those by mortals read. Well blest is he who has a dear one dead: A friend he has whose face will never change- A dear communion that will not grow strange: The anchor of alove is death. The blessed sweetness of a loving breath Will reach our cheek all fresh through weary years, For her who died long since, Ah! waste not tears, She's thine unto the end. Thank God for one dear friend, With face still radiant with the light of truth, Who loves the greybeard as he loved the youth, Through twenty years of death. ,101 ' I 32. l 6 f 0 up Row 1: Howard Bevington, Don Price, .lac-kie Galloway. Senior Activities The Senior Class organization ran smoothly with its ten members each contributing his share of time to selling candy and putting on the class play. These activities, along with our stands at the ball games, were designed to send us Well on our Way on our class trip and, despite several set-backs, We will be able to enjoy a trip through Washington, New York and Niagara Falls. We have enjoyed Working together, with our sponsor as one of us. Our pop-corn parties and other parties have been fun for all. 1 la Howard Bevington Hot-Rod Class Play 1, 2, 3, 4 Boys' Chorus 1, 2, 3 Mixed Chorus 1, 2, 3 Talisman 4 Spotlight 3, Reporter 35 Vice Pres. 4 F. Out of these 18, there are nine graduating this year. Remember when Eleanor Evans got her mouth tied shut? In the second grade we were under the direction of Miss Gibson. Remember when she sent all of the boys to the office? Miss Evans was our director during the third grade. Remember when we built grass huts? Miss Hieston started us on the road to learning about the world by teaching us geography. Remember when he caught Howard, John, and Anna Lee talking one day and they had to stay in at noon? We were directed by D. Edwin Jones in the fifth and sixth grades. Remember when he was going to give us all a whipping and the County Superintendent walked in, and we got to take our seats? In our seventh and eighth grades we were under the direction of Mrs. Pugh. Remember when we played foot tag for one-half of the year with- out getting caught? Connie Perez entered our class this year. The next year we found that we were more than members of the high school-we were actually Sophomores. Remember when Howard ripped his pants in History Class? In our Junior year, we found many exciting things to do. We received our class rings and pins. We presented our class play Hot Water Heron, on April 8, 1948. We entertained the Seniors May 13, at the school for the Prom. We had Miss Breese as sponsor. Our Senior year we found ourselves under the direction of Mrs. Morris. She keeps us on the jump all the time. We presented M'Liss, My Western Miss , on November 4, 1949. We chose our name cards and invitations, and were busy on the annual a lot of the time. We decided to take a trip to Washington, D. C., New York, and Niagara Falls after school is out. -.17.. THE SENIOR CLASS Don Price -13- Class Prophecy May 23, 1960 Dear Mrs. Morris, Since receiving your letter of the first, I have come in contact with several of the members of the Class of '50 and I thought you might be inter- ested in their various vocations. I talked to Dean Swygart in Cleveland the other day and he told me that as manager of the Reds he was trying to buy one of the Indians' reserve pitchers. He is hoping for a World Champion team this year. Attending the Chicago Livestock Exposition, I thought I heard a familiar voice. I turned to see Howard Bevington selling the Grand Champion 4-H and F. F. A. steer. He informed me that the steer he was selling came from the Lazy-D ranch, one of the largest in the West, of which Don Price is the owner. I attended a Broadway production of North Atlantic and the star- Miss Constance Starlight-is in real life none other than our own Connie Perez. She told me that the month before she gave a benefit show at a Navajo School. The principal, you will be surprised to learn, is our former schoolmate, Dorothea Pugh. She has a large school and her pupils all love her. Somebody told me that Ruth Lyons has a new singing star on her television show. Curiosity got the best of me and on investigation I found Eleanor Evans before the mike , I saw in the paper that the Pistons beat Rochester by a great score, all because of the feats of their speedy player-John Brenneman. He plans to organize his own team soon. I visited Anna Lee and saw that she, her husband, and two children are making a great succcess with their huge dairy farm. They supply all Tokio and surrounding territory with all kinds of dairy products. And last, but not least, is Bob Muter. I suppose you have heard that he has taken over the managership of the Marshal Field Store in Chicago and is expanding it to meet the huge volume of business. That takes in all my classmates. In case you wonder how I see them all, my travels with the Recruiting Service of the Army Nurse Corps takes me all over the country. ..j-9.. Senior Class Play Our main Senior activity, the play, went very well, considering all the things that might have happened. M'Liss fMy Western Miss J was given in November before an ap- preciative audience. The play took place in the little mining town of Smith's Pocket. It centers around M'Liss Smith, the town bum's daughter. She clears the school teacher, with whom she's in love, of the murder of her father, and finds herself in possession of great wealth. The cast of characters includes: George Smith sc, M'Liss escee. or John Grey ,V Yuba Bill ree- selee S Mrs. Lena Moffits Clytie Moffits WT- Bess Starlight he Clara Hunting se, Carter Langdon -sc Howard Bevington as also Eleanor Evans ,rs Robert Muter ,S Dean Swygart , Jackie Galloway TSW Dorothea Pugh Jw Consuelo Perez UW Anna Lee Taylor can John Brenneman Judge McSnaggley ..i,... -- rr ,sic Don Price We enjoyed giving this play under the direction of Mrs. Morris and will remember it for some time to come. -20- Sw Sk Row 1: Rex Shaffer, John Oberlitner, Gloria Jean George, Harold Boley, Stanley Calvin. ' I Juniors At last we have reached the next-to-the-last step in our upward climb. This year has been the busiest and the best of our school years. The concession at the basketball games was the first thing on the agenda, the biggest thrill came when we received our class rings in Novem- ber. We had a very nice Christmas party at Jane Overholt's, and we also sponsored an 'All High School Party, February 14th. But, the year has not been all play and no work. Every six weeks the Juniors put out our school paper, the Spotlight g we gave a class play April 21st and of course, the Junior-Senior Banquet on May 5th. This is always as much fun as it is work. We would like to thank our able sponsor, Miss Helen Breese, for her time and patience shown during the year, also a vote of thanks goes to the officers of the class: President ..-resell lg- Gloria Jean George Vice President ll, ll l.llll l Harold Boley Secretary lll... llllll J an Overholt Treasurer ll lll. ,M John Overlitner News Reporter ll...,.ggggggggg..gs.llll - l llll Carolyn Wise We are looking forward to becoming proud Seniors. ...22-. Don Price-Forward Don was a real scrapper to the last and, one who kept plugging, in all the games though the tide was turning. He will be missed by the squad next year. John Brenneman-Guard John, with plenty of power making up for his lack of height, was always there on the job. He will be missed by the team next year. Howard Bevington-Guard Howard, a senior, clever and smooth, will certainly be missed by the squad next season. A good faker, he led the Dukes in scoring during the season. Dean Swygart-Forward Flashy, with speed to burn, good in tight pinches, and a dependable all around man. Dean will be missed on the squad next year. Harold Boley-Forward Harold had plenty of drive and was a steady and reliable ball handler. Tough on the defense and a good boy to get the ball. He will be back with the Dukes next year. . John Oberliiner-Cenier A good bank men with elbows that would hurt anyone's eyes. John has one more season to go and should be one of York's aces. He should show what he has in the line of basketball next year. Bob Muter-Center Bob is a good rebound man with plen- ty of drive. He sure likes to rough-it-up. He will be missed on the squad next next. George Swygart-Guard George should be one of York's lead- ing players next yea'r with his sharp- shooting from anywhere on the floor. David Owen Evans-Forward Dave, a sophomore, has two more years ahead of him. He should be of great value to the team in the coming seasons. He played steady and reliable ball as a substitute. Merlin Shade-Coach This year was Mr. Shade's first year as coach at York. He worked hard and spent many hours with the boys, devel- oping a clean, hard fighting team. He was always stressing teamwork and loy- alty to our players and fairness toward our opponents. I am sure everyone would like to see him back next year. The boys were always playing to the best of their ability, and always trying to Win. The reserves this year were on the winning end 6 times and the losing end 13 times, but with the experience they have had this year, they should make a very good team next year. Our Cheerleaders this year were Marcia Taylor, Carolyn Wise, and Jane Swygart. We, the basketball team, feel that they did a lot to keep up the team spirit by their loyal lea- ding of the cheers. Baseball York's baseball team showed what it could do this fall when it turned in three wins and three defeats. All the games played were very hard fought. The boys have very high hopes for Winning the spring tournament. Row 1: Row 2: ROW 3: Bill Hughes, Ilon Price, Paul Perez, l-lziruld Boley, Howzxrcl ljovington, George Svvygart.
