Of these Nancy Evans, Gordon Jones, Mary Linton, Margaret Ries, and Allen Thomas, are graduating this spring. Remember the grocery store we had behind our desks? ? ? ? ? Our second and third years were supervised by Lillian Gibson. Remember when Mrs. Gibson almost sent the second grade back to the first grade for saying we liked Miss Johnson better than we liked her ? ? ? During the second grade, Paul Gamble moved to Hoaglin-Jackson and Kenneth Crow joined us. Remember when Patty Thomas and Nancy Evans hid the paddle? ? ? This was the year we presented the Crossing of the Mayflower and Ettamay dropped the kettle of soup. In our fourth year, we had our first experience with a man teacher when we ad- vanced to David Van Eman's room. This year, Jack Fronefield joined us and was the subject of many love quarrels between Nancy Evans and Patty Thomas. During the fifth and sixth grades, we had D. Edwin Jones as our teacher. Paul Gamble joined us as a permanent member. I think D. Edwin wore the paddle out on us for it seemed we were always getting paddled. Our junior high days were under the direction of Mrs. Pugh. During these years, we learned not to talk so much for it meant staying in at noon. In the eighth grade we held our first party at Margaret's home. This year we lost Patty Thomas, who moved to Fort Wayne. After three months, we took our place as Green Freshmen, under the direction of Mr. Fryer. Merl Emans moved away temporarily. Remember the hay ride, where tomatoes were thrown? ? ? Remember the party at Spencerville? ? With more confidence we came back as Sophomores to join the ranks of upper classmen with Mr. Ray as our sponsor. This year we had a Hallowe'en masquerade party at Nancy's. Remember the sleigh ride we had during that year? ? ? Ed Rigdon joined us temporarily and Merle Emans has joined us permanently. As Juniors, we elected the following officers: President - Jack Fronefieldg Vice- President - Kenneth Crow, Secretary - Paul Gamble, Treasurer - Mary Linton. Miss Helen Breese was our sponsor. On November 26th, we served Thanksgiving dinner where everyone stuffed himself. On December 23rd we sponsored a turkey raffle. The turkey was raffled off at the next basketball game. Mrs. Calvin won the turkey and invited the Juniors and Seniors to a Christmas dinner. We had the privilege of putting out the Spotlight with Merl Emans as our Editor-in-chief. On May 4th, we presented 'fHillbilly Courtship. On May 6th, we honored the Seniors in the annual J unior-Senior banquet, which we held at the New Hotel Marsh. We also received our rings and pins, and were very proud of them. We started our Senior year under the direction of Mrs. Morris, with the election of the following officers: President - Jack Fronefieldg Vice President - Nancy Evans, Secretary-Treasurer - Mary Linton. The one study we all enjoyed was Democracy, at which we held class meetings and talked about our Talisman. Paul Gamble is Editor- in-chief. On November 5th, we presented It's Papa Who Pays. No one will forget the night before the play when Merl Emans went to the hospital. We were all thank- ful for Mc. Conaha, who took Merl's place. We chose our name cards and invitations this year. Our class colors are scarlet and grey, and our flower is a scarlet rose. In the middle of January, the Seniors went through the Delphos Printing Company and saw how our daily papers were printed. During the noon hour the Seniors sold candy bars to help finance their trip. We served a delicious Christmas dinner. Re- member the sleigh ride on January 31st? ? ? At every other basketball game we served pop, popcorn, hot dogs, ice cream and candy bars. Throughout the year we sponsored and were invited to many folk games, which were held at the school and which everyone enjoyed. The Juniors very pleasantly entertained the class at the Junior-Senior prom which was held at the school. The latter part of our Senior year, we were joined by Fred Stage who came from Dayton, Ohio. May 13th was designated as Senior Day. The dedication was read and the annuals were handed out. Our Baccalaureate exercises were held Sunday night, May 22nd, with Mr. Van Gundy, of Elgin, as our guest speaker. We received our diplomas at our Commencement on the 26th of May when Dr. Hugh Evans, of Dayton, delivered a very interesting address. On Saturday, the 28th, we left on our Senior trip with Washington, D. C. as our destination. We were accompanied by Mrs. Morris and Mr. McConaha. 17 Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1949 of York High School, having been pro- nounced as mentally superior by the faculty and underclassmen, do hereby make our last will and testament. First, to the Juniors we will our quiet dispositions and excellent be- havior, which we feel they can use. Second, to the Sophomores we will our good grades and our ability to get something accomplished. Third, to the Freshmen we will our ability to go through high school and to reach the final goal, receiving our diplomas. Fourth, to the Faculty, we will the unassimilated knowledge in the text- books we leave behind and any unused workbooks or portions thereof that they may find. Since we feel that we have some special talents, we want to will them to underclassmen who might have use for them in the following years that they will spend in York School. I, Jack Fronefield, will my so-called fatness to Dorothea Pugh. I, Ettamay Patrick, will my ability to be studious and not to go steady to Anna Lee Taylor. I, Paul Gamble, will my ability to sit on the bench to Hot Rod. I, Merl Emans, will my ability to stay away from the girls and go to Del- phos, to Stanley Calvin. I, Margaret Ries, will my position as Y-Teen President to anyone of the Junior or Sophomore girls, and hope that whoever it may be will lead the group to greater success. I, Allen Thomas, will my ability to sing tenor to Stanley Welker. I, Ed Rigdon, will my ability to be seen in Delphos almost any night in the week, and at the same house, to Bill Hughes. He can use it as he sees fit to the extent that Bill doesn't stop at the same house as I do. I, Nancy Evans, will my position as cheerleader to anyone who can help the team win more games. I, Gordon Jones, will my ability to drive an auto at any speed to Don Price. I, Kenneth Crow, do hereby will my knowledge of the Latin Language, gained from two years of constant study and sacrifice to Hugh Owen Pugh, and also my old Latin books, with the complete understanding that the knowledge contained therein is greatly needed and will be put to good use. I, Mary Linton, having excess knowledge which I will never be able to consume and desiring that someone else attain the knowledge to which I am accustomed do hereby will the same to anyone who needs it. I, Fred Stage, will my car to anyone with enough money and brains to keep it running. I8 Class Prophecy R. R. No. 1, Mendon, Ohio, January 3, 1964 Dear Mary: Just think, 15 years have passed since we graduated from good old York High. I see all of the kids every once in awhile, so I thought I would write and tell you about them since you have been away for such a long time. How do you like being the President's private secretary? I bet that keeps you very busy with your family and home to look after, too. Nancy has completed her nurses' training, but is now devoting all her time to the farm and her family. Ettamay has her own Studebaker now and has gone to Hollywood to be with her Hollywood friends. She is June Allyson's personal maid. Gordon is now driving at the Indianapolis auto races in the 500 mile race. He had been very successful in keeping the road. Merl, too, has made quite a reputation as a motorcycle racer. He has been traveling all over the world to take part in these races and has won many valuable prizes. Paul has purchased a 200-acre farm. But at the present time is Secre- tary of Agriculture in Washington, D. C. Allen is now running a ball room, and he has named it The Art. He is also teaching dancing some of his spare time. I have heard a lot about it. No doubt you have heard about Ed's entering the world foot races next year. Since he has won several national contests he will probably win this event also. He has been married for several years and I hear that the first one of his five children is entering school this fall. Jack, after having been in the army five years, returned home and finally decided on Carolyn for his wife. They are living on their farm. Thanks to Allis Chalmers for his progress! Kenneth has now worded his way up to mayor of Delphos, Ohio, and is expected to be elected to the State Legislature next. Fred, after three years of service in the navy, now has a large Guernsey farm west of Celina and is living there with some girl he married from Dayton. In his spare time, he also has started a business for fixing 1933 Plymouths. Probably you already know that I'm happily married, and live on a farm, and operate my own beauty shoppe at my home. Juniors Ten Juniors started their eleventh year of school with high hopes for the year. VVith the help of our sponsor. Miss Breese, We have accomplished much. One of our favorite jobs has been publishing the Spotlight We hope our readers have enj oyed this as much as We have enjoyed doing it. We gave an all high school party in December and feel that it was a success. We also served at some of the ball games, to help our class treasury. We are looking forward to the Prom and our class play to be in April and May. We're proud of our rings and pins. which arrived on November 7. Sophomores We have reached the tenth step in our climb of the scholastic ladder. This year has been a very busy, as well as an enjoyable one. We have had an added activity this year, All High School Parties. Jane Overholt gave one at the Y. W. C. A., in December. Jane rejoined us after a year at Mendon. Coach Our coach is a man who has been considerate toward us when We've made mistakes and I think I speak for all the players when I say that We thank him very much for his ' help and Wish him success for the rest of his years. 37 The Three Cheerleaders The basketball boys would like to thank Carolyn VVise, Jackie Galloway, and Nancy Evans for their helpful sup- port to the team throughout the year, Basketball 44 -- J ack Fronefield - Guard Jack, who is always in there fighting, always comes up with the ball and he will be missed next year. 00 - Gordon Jones - Center Gordon, a good jumper and rebounder as well as defense man, is in his last year of basketball for York. 99 - Paul Gamble - Center Paul, who never stops driving 'till he gets those rebounds and hands them off to his teammates, will be missed next year. 77 - Don Price - Forward Don, who has one more year for York, should be one to look after from the first to the last game- 88 - John Brenneman - Guard John, who is little, should use that to his advantage on the team next year and you can bet he will. 22 -- Howard Bevington - Guard Howard, who is another small man, has the ability to go in and under the opponent and will probably do so in his next year. 1l - Dean Sygart - Guard Dean, with his red head bobbing as he goes after that ball, has one more year for the York Dukes. 55 - Bob Muter - Forward Bob, who is good on blocks and handoffs when the cause arises, has one more year to go for York. 33 - Harold Boley - Forward Harold, who can fight himself out of a tough spot, has two more years to use his height under that bankboard. 66 - Sanley Calvin - Center Stanley, another boy with two years, has time enough to show that he can help bring his team to victory. 38 Standing-lfizlly llugln-S, ll-Jwxuwl lg'-'X'lllL1'l1lll, lion Price. Choruses The county was divided into two sections this year. We had our music festival at York on March 18. The other sections had their program a week before. The Mixed Chorus sang 8 songs, the Boys Chorus. 4 songs and Girls Chorus. 3 songs. On May 10. 1949 the City and county schools combined to give a concert. The Girls Chorus gave an operetta this year. The Place: The combined living room and dining room of the Denny home- Syopsis SCENE l In the play, papa cracks down on the family for entering so many con- tests. Contests are against his principles, he'll have no more of them and then he Wins a car in a contest he had forgotten heid entered! To keep the family from finding out papa fibs a bit. He tells them he has bought a car with money from a brother who repaid a loan. Then the brother appears. To make matters worse it develops that papa hasnit Won first prize but only the second prize-A Russian wolf- hound. Papa is egged on to bigger and better lies by his friend, Mr. Fixer-who fixes everything wrong. We are very grateful to Mrs. Morris, our sponsor, for the time and patience she gave us in presenting this play. We all hope you enjoyed this as much as We did presenting it. 50 Calendar SEPTEMBER 13-First day of school. Oh! How the green fresh- men did act. We were here a half day. We started the year by getting our assignments. 17-First baseball game here. Willshire defeated us. 20-Juniors ordered class rings. 21-We adventured to Wren for our second game. We won by a considerably large score. 24-Played Hoaglin-Jackson there. We lost. 28-Middle Point traveled here for a baseball game, such a rough game, but we won. OCTOBER 5-Ridge came here in hopes to defeat us in base- ball, but we fooled them. We won. 13-Teachers' meeting in Van Wert. Did they en- Joy it? 7 ? ? 14-Seniors sponsored an All High school party. We all enjoyed the folk games that were taught to us. 22-Ah! One.siX weeks is gone. 26-Fall teachers' banquet at Ohio City. 29-Our first vacation. Teachers! Meeting at To- ledo. NOVEMBER 5-The main interest of the year The Senior Class Playf! What a time! ! 1 What a Suc- cess! ! ! 9-Juniors were happily flashing their class rings around. They are pretty. 12-Our first basketball game of the season. It was with Harrod. We won. 16-We traveled to Wren for our second ball game of the season. It was the worst football game we have ever played. But we managed to win. Jones got laid up for quite some time. 19-On our adventure to Ohio City, we had hopes of winning but it didn't turn out that way. We lost. 23-Ridge came here for a basketball game. We lost. 24-Juniors served the Thanksgiving dinner. Every- one enjoyed it. Vacation started. 26-York met with Middle Point over there. We lost. 29-Y Teen's Banquet for the mothers. Back to school from our vacation. DECEMBER 3-End of second six weeks. Played Willshire over there. Our first league game-We lost. 10-Wren came here for second league game. We lost. 13-Juniors sponsored All High school party. Ev- eryone enjoyed it. 14-High school skating party. 17-We traveled to ,Hoaglin-Jackson and got beat. 21-Christmas operetta presented by first 6 grades. It was enjoyed by everyone. 23-We are sure everyone got full at dinner this day. Dinner was served by the Seniors. Played Buckland here. At last, we won. Non- league game. 24 - Jan. 3-Christmas vacation. What fun. JANUARY 4-Y. Teen's Banquet at Y. W. C. A. -League game with Middle Point. We lost. 11-F. F. A. sponsored an All High school party. How funny it was to see Mrs. Morris feed Mr. McDonel a banana blindfolded. 14-Delphos Jefferson came here in a non-league game. We lost. -Such weather we have when we go away to a ball game. We traveled to Mendon. We lost. 21-We traveled to Ridge in a league game in hopes we'd win, but we lost. -End of 3rd six weeks. Semester tests. -Y. Teens meeting. We did craft work. 28-We met again with Ohio City and we lost again. The lights on the Ohio City bus Went out and we had to take them home in one of our buses. The Seniors went to Delphos and went through the Delphos Printing and Publishing Co. office and saw how they printed the papers. 31-The Seniors had a sleigh ride-Burr - it was cold. FEBRUARY l-Basketball game - Neptune came here. We lost. 4-We adventured over to Convoy to play a league game. 3' ' -Senior scholarship test. ' - ll-We played Union here. This is the last game of the season. We won. 19-York played Hoaglin-Jackson in the County Tournament. We lost. MARCH 4-End of 4th six weeks. Everyone was studying hard to pass all the tests. -F. F. A. Banquet. 18-Our school entertained the county by having the County Music Festival here. 22-Y. Teens sponsored an All High school hard time party. 28-Y. Teens meeting. APRIL l-April fools day.
