President Mr. Brown -U -.,, Sponsor Class History September 1928 found a Wide-eyed group cf boys and girls entering school for the first time. There were 27 members in our class. Of these, Betty George, Betty Monroe, Nell Grunewald, Dorothy Williams, Billy Lewis, Ethel Jones, Carl Lewis, Kathryn Thatcher, Kathryn Kline, James Heath, Eloise Lininger, Mary Morris, Lowell Overholt, Arthella Thcmas, Marvin Evans, and James Zirkle, will graduate this spring. In March of our first year Altabelle Starbuck joined our ranks. We were. successfully guided through our first year by Miss Olwen Jones. Our second grade was under the direction of Miss Helen Waltz. Again our class was increased when Elenora Linton and Betty Young entered. Our third grade was sponsored by Miss Edna Waltz, and our class was increased when Lloyd Morris entered. In our fourth year the class was divided, part being under Miss Ilo Brown and, part Miss Mary Davies. At this time Russell Fisher joined our class. Our fifth grade was under the direction of Miss Ilo Brown. It was during this year that Joe Couts entered York. During cur sixth, seventh and eighth grades we were under the direction of D. Edwin Jones and Alonzo Rhoades. Here we gained a firm foundation for the four years to follow. The next fall we entered high school as green Freshmen. Mr. R. Paul Jones did a very good job of guiding us through our first year. Don Detrick joined our class during this term. Our first class party was held at the home of Betty Young. With much more confidence we came back in the fall of '37 to join the ranks of the upper classmen. We had two new members in our class this year, June Gross- nickle and Evelyn Price. We organized our class with Mr. Dana Swinehart as spon- sor and Lloyd Morris as president. Our annual class party was held at the home of Billy Lewis. As Juniors we elected the following oflicers: Mary Morris, President, Lowell Over- holt, Vice-President, Betty George, Treasurer, and Lee Lare, Secretary. Our sponsor this year was Miss Frances Hessenberger. John Adams and Dick Stuber joined our class during our Junior year. We were very thrilled in presenting our class play, Crashing Society, which was a great success. On the 19th day of May 1939 we- pleasantly bid good-bye to the Seniors at our reception in the Red-Letter Cafe. We organized our Senior class, under the direction of Mr. Miller Brown, with the following ofiicers: President, Lloyd Morris, Vice President, Kathryn Kline, Secretary, Elenora Lin- ton, and Treasurer, Evelyn Price. On the 10th of May we successfully presented our Senior class play, Ghost Pa- rade with Ethel Jane Jones and James Zirkle in the leading roles. The Juniors very pleasantly entertained the class at the Junior-Senior reception Held May 17. Our Baccalaureate exercises were held Sunday night, May 19, with Rev. Jones of Venedocia, as speaker. We received our diplomas at our Commencement on the 20th of May when Rev. Wobus, of Dayton, delivered a very interesting message. By: Altabelle Starbuck. I, Nell Grunewald, have heard of the rest, Because Iim a reporter for the Associated Press. At one time or other I've had in my column, A line about each of my classmates, the following: NOW Betty George has changed her name from Miss, And now is living in wedded bliss. John Adams now has a partner for life, And you should see his cute little wife. June Grossnickle is studying over in France, To come back and show us how to dance. Joe Couts is on the All-American team, We know he is great from what we have seen. Ethel Jane Jones to her boss is now married, He made the motion and she saw it was carried. Don Detrick owns an aeroplane and iiies through In all of his races he's taken first place. Kathryn Kline for her fame does not lack, She types letters galore for her boss, Mr. Black. As a radio announcer Marvin Evans is swell, If you want to hear him, tune to X. Z. L. .leanne Lewis is an actress in Hollywood now, Everyone there, says she's a, wow. Russell Fisher farms land for miles around, And a better farmer cannot be found. James Heath is a member of Scotland Yard, To gain this position I know he worked hard. Betty Monroe is a nurse for a. doctor of fame, space From what I have heard she will soon change her name Billy Lewis is a professor of great knowledge, He is now an instructor at Harvard College. A distinction in Art Evelyn Miller has won, From her painting, which was, The Rays of the Sun? Carl Lewis is a politician of great fame, To be President of the United States is his aim. Now as for Carl Millisor, he's a young man with strength. For I see by the papers, he's heavy-weight Champ. Altabelle Starbuck is a teacher in school, To teach perfect Algebra is herrule. Lowell Overholt striving for fame, Is now a. lawyer up in Maine. Kathryn Thatcher the one you all know, ls now quite famous on the radio. Lloyd Morris is a doctor who knows a great deal, There is not disease that he cannot heal. Arthella Thomas owns an orange estate, After eating one, you'll eat a crate. Eloise Lininger has sure won her fame, By being a stewardess on a Passenger Plane. Dorothy Lee Williams is a great Opera star, To compare her with others, she's way above par. Dick Stuber is now a Justice of Peace, He has married his aunt, and his uncle and niece. Elenora Linton, Iirst lady of the land, Leads American people by the turn of her hand. Betty Young is a famous dresser of hair, And the styles she uses are very rare. James Zirkle is a famous veterinary, He cures anything from horse to canary. Robert Waltz Reporter ................ -- Junior Linton At our next meeting we talked over the possibilities of having a party which later materialized as a pleasant evening at the home of Virginia Zirkle. It has been customary that the Seniors have their class play in the: fall and the Juniors have theirs in the spring but this year the order was reversed. The Juniors put on a farce in three acts, OH, PROFESSOR, HOW COULD YOUH, with Miss Betty Burke as our director. Every one present enjoyed our play very much and the Juniors enjoyed presenting it. The Juniors chose their class rings before Christmas vacation and they were delivered toward the last of January. The ring is quite plain, but we think it is just what We wanted. It was purchased from Bastian Brothers, of Rochester, New York. Honk! Rattle! Bang! Get out of the way. We are here and weire here to stay. In the year of 1938, we were cogitating about seeking further know- ledge within the door of a high school when we, as Freshman entered York High School, with twenty-two students. In March we were joined by two more fun loving members, Helen Ward and Edith Stuber. We have tried to be the peppiest bunch that has ever invaded the doors of this school, and we have succeeded in making plenty of noise and arousingl enthusiasm throughout the last two years. On October 30, we held a Hallowe'en Party at the home of Jane Breese. It seems as though the girls are the more active this year, for they put five girls on the bas- ketball squad, while the boys failed to get any on their side of the sport. We pledge ourselves tot help make ours a better class and to place York High first in our affections. Crack!fThese were the words and ac- tions we received the first two or three weeks of our Freshman year from the upper classmen. All twenty-one of us lived through it, and we are better high school pupils after such treatment. The activities of the Freshman were very numerous during the year. In October we enjoyed a Hallowe'en Party at the home of Helen Girod. This gathering shall never be forgotten as long as memories of the Freshman class last. The Freshman Class was represented very strong on the Junior High basketball team. Also Wayne Pollock was on the Varsity squad. We are sure that the Freshman will be a real asset to the school in the three? years to come. The Freshman had as their guiding hands the following: President ............................ Half-frozen, we were warmed by hot chocolate at Superintendent White's home in Venedocia and then after singing some more we had a fine breakfast at Mr. 'Tom Morris' home. On a Saturday, January 20, we went to Versailles where recordings were made of several numbers. Those will recall many happy memories of the 'fChoir and its activities. Under the direction of Miss Burke and later Mr .Hauenstein, we sang for the Christmas program, Farmers' Institute, and the County Music Festival. The training in A capella singing and appreciation of good music will encourage us to participate in future group singing. Girls' Chorus At the beginning of the first semester, thirty-five members enrolled in the Girls' Glee Club, which was organized under the direction of Miss Burke with Evelyn Price elected as President and Mary Morris, librarian. We were under the capable direction of Miss Burke, who left us at the half of the year. We appreciate all the time she spent with us and we hope that she will consider it well spent. Her successor was Mr. Roger Hauenstein, a graduate of Bluffton College, who did a fine job of directing this Music organization. Girls' Basketball All good things must come to an end, so it is with basketball. We have come to the close of another season. This is also the last year for girls' basketball in the State of Ohio and the girls that are still in scliool regret this. The girls' basketball season started with fifteen out to practice. Many of the girls came out to practice for the first time and helped, the team a great deal. On the first twelve there were 'five Seniors, one Junior, five Sopho- mores and one Freshman. We elected Betty Monroe honorary Captain of the team. Betty played on the regulai' team during her four years' ing high school and pepped up the team just when they needed it. The team feels that they have received some good playing on the basketball squad. They feel that they have become better sports and that they have enriched their friendships by coming in contact with other young people in the county. With our team, the same as honest men in life, we do not seek victory through a lucky loop-hole, but by true technique do we play the game. To this end all our athletics are directed. Although the season's record in games won is not just wltat the: team had hoped to make it, still there is every reason the school should take pride in its boys. The team was distinguished by its loyalty, persis- tence, and guts and had there been a more even break in luck it would have finished the season among the leaders. In the tournament drawing we were lucky enough to draw a team which we had beaten twice before, Wren. We met them at the last game on Friday night and won by the score of twenty-one' to nineteen. After winning this game we played Hoaglin Jackson, who had out-scored Con- voy the preceding Wednesday night. Cn Saturday morning we lost to them by the score of thirty-four to twenty-six. On Saturday night we met Middle Point, the County League winners, in a Consolation game which we lost. The iinal score was twenty-eight to thirty. Willshire won the County Tournament and also the District Tourna- ment, but lost their second game in the State Tournament.
