Verle Rice, Kenneth Yvaltz, Grace Roller, Hope Prichard, Carl Bevington and Leland Ross, went to Ohio City their first two years. Verle is graduating from there this year. Six of the other members of the class-Dan Couts, Elizabeth George, Harrold lNIorris, Blargaret Nlorris, Gladys lyleredith, and Oscar jones-completed their Freshman and Sophomore years at Van YVert. Kleredith llorris attended Ridge High School, y2O, ,ZIQ York J22, and will graduate from Lima South High this year, Leo Baird was enrolled in the Spencerville two years. He was a member of our junior class until Christmas but was forced to withdraw on account of ill health. Hope Prichard was married while in her Junior year. It will be only a few weeks now until the goal of our efforts will be attained. VVe are sorry to leave dear old Y. H. S., for we have spent many happy days together. I am sure that in later years, when we are busy lighting the battles of life, we will often think of our happy school days. -GRACE ROLLER. EDITORIAL As the first class to graduate from the York Centralized High School, the Seni- ors of 1924 have put forth great effort to publish this 1lIl1iSIIlKl71. VVhen we 'con- sider that high school days are coming to a close it is with bright hopes for the future, yet not without profound regret. There- fore it is our wish that in years to come each page will act as a charm to help recall those finest associations at York. -LIQLAND Ross. A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE In was early in the month of December, 1940, about eight p. m. The night was cold, dark and starless. I was sitting comfortably before the huge old Colonial fire- place in my cozy little home in Los Angeles, California. Listlessly I picked up the Los Angeles Daily Times. In glancing over the paper these headlines, Jonestown Rivals Standard Oil Companyl' attracted my attention. I hurriedly read the article and learned that during the last twenty years Jonestown had grown to he the largest city in northwestern Ohio, and had incorporated the villages of Elgin and Venedocia. As l pondered over this it recalled those old days at Y. C. H. S. Thoughts of 1ny old schyool-mates came back to me. Ah! How I should know of each of my class-mates of 24. just then I heard a step on the porch and a tap at the door. One moment and we were in each other's arms. Peg, where did you come from? What are you doing? Why haven't you written FU Before we parted I learned that she had just secured her fourth divorce, that she was now making her living by selling literature on Perplexing Love Affairs. She had received a letter from Elizabeth George, who had met a wealthy man at college several years ago and with her little family was now living on a ranch in Texas. Eliz- abeth also wrote that Grace Roller had been teaching in Hawaii for several years and was now seeking the appointment of Superintendent of Schools there. After we talked for some time, we decided to go to a cabaret for dinner. After hurried preparations we took a cab to the Biltmore. The driver looked familiar and we soon recognized him as Dan Couts, who was a valuable employe of the Yellow Cab Company. He told that he kept in touch with Kenneth VValtz. Kenneth was now called the second Steinmetz of America. He had just invented a bomb which carried hi1n up to lNIars, where he is making regular trips every VVednesday and Sunday night. When we reached the Biltmore and were seated, two well-dressed and prosperous looking men came in and were placed near us. I caught sight of one of their rings and recognized the signet of our class of y24. At that moment llvlargaret, who was looking in the same direction, whispered to me, Glad there is something familiar about our friends at the next tablefl Do you believe in mental telepathy? This is what happened. VVe enjoyed din- ner in the company of Oscar Jones and Leland Ross, and were acquainted with their many experiences in life. Oscar was a model for Hart Shaffner 85 Marx. Leland was managing a haberdashery. During our conversation they told us that Carl Bev- ington had been a champion of a football team at Yale. At present he was preparing to become a minister to save the youths of the nation. YVe had a very delightful time and said good-bye, not knowing when we would meet again. The next morning, as was my custom, I made a cross-country flight to Pamona. About ten miles out I looked down and saw on the roof of a large farm building Ill large, black letters: -I. Harold lVIorris, Persian Cats for Sale. This induced me to land and before long I was in Harold's presence. He was the same Harold, a little older, but jolly as ever. He showed me his collection of cats, thousands of them. From annual cat sales and international animal shows, Har- old had made his millions besides the admiration of the fair sex. The next evening as I sat by my fire-place pondering over the coincidence of having learned of the class of IZ4, it gave me much satisfaction to know that they were Hlllessezl is the Illllll who has found his life's uforlx Let him ask no ofhrr blessedness. -G. REESE, Sponsor HINIOR CLASS HISTORY In our Freshman year we were as sheep without a shepherd, scattered here and there, but when we became Sophomores, we joined hands and all came together, being of one mind to make our class the best ever. Being inexperienced, We decided to choose a leader to guide and direct us in wisdom and discretion. We chose Sir Walter QPhelpsQ Raleigh, a mighty man of valor, who chose three others to help carry on the affairs of the class. A treat that will be long remembered by us as Sophomores was seeing Robin Hoodf' which our English teacher, Mrs. Ludlow, planned for us. It was a red letter day in our school year. We proved ourselves so worthy that We were promoted the following year and given the name of Juniors. As leaders of this band were chosen Harriet Jones, pres- identg Fauna Waltz, vice-president? lwargaret Davies, secretaryg Kenneth Morris, treasurer. We were now ready for work and all the other classes found us ever will- ing to do our share. In all social affairs we co-operated and assisted, and on chapel mornings the Juniors always carried the palm, their program being original and interesting. This year we decided to give a class play and in spite of obstacles that seemed stupendous we were able to put before the public a grand piece of art. VVe were very ably assisted by our teachers, who gave of their time and talent so freely, and as a class we sincerely thank them. As we near the end of our Junior year we look forward to our work as Seniors, and we hope for great things. VVe also realize that our responsibilities will be many but in unity there is strength and so we turn our eyes with eager anticipation toward the future. VVe sincerely hope that we shall all have the pleasure of receiving our diplomas from York School. Our ranks have been broken twice, two having left for other schools: lWae VVhyman and Russell Brunni. We regretted losing these members as we would have liked their company all the way. But whether we end our high school life here or elsewhere, let us resolve to stand for high ideals and to always go forward and upward. As Juniors, we were very proud that our instructors were willing to come back to us and to bring another with them, which proved to us that we had not used them very badly. VVe all feel, as a class, that we owe them a vote of thanks for their pa- tience, kindness, and tact, for we realize that times without number they were sorely tried. It was very well attended. The following number was given by Dr. Culp, a very well known lecturer and entertainer, on December 3rd. The third number was the YVelsh lXIiners' Quartette, held on January 23111, 1924. The old saying is, The longer they come, the worse they get. Hut it doesn't always hap- pen so, for the next number was the Schubert Ladies' Quartette. They gave us a splendid program. VVe hope next year to make better and want all the people of York to co-operate with the school and attend the Lecture Course of future. An old-fashioned Hspelling bee was held in Van Vvert High School auditorium frlarch 22nd, 1924. Lester Hughes, lllargaret Davies, and Pauline Remagen repre- sented York High School. The girls did fine. Lester held his own till next to last, then went down on strategem. On Rlarch 27th York and Ridge debated on the subject, 'lShould the VVorld War Veterans Receive an Adjusted Compensation or Notfl Ridge won. It was a wise choice. He developed a basketball team which ranks well with the best teams in this district. The coach did his part in putting out a winning team. The athletic activities have had a salutary effect upon the school in general. It has increased the attendance, held pupils to their duties, and aided in maintaining dis- cipline. Everyone extends him a vote of thanks for his untiring efforts in elevating the athletic interests of York High School. They were always on the side lines yelling for us and now have come forward with a big jubilee or banquet after the basketball sea- son is over. The banquet was held Friday night, April 4th, 1924, in the gymnasium of the York High School. A basket dinner was served at 6 o'clock and the tables were decorated in the team colors, which are blue and white. The teams sure did show that they were out of training by eating pie, cake and other goodies served by the boosters of the school. After dinner the letters were presented to the players that earned Y's. Everybody enjoyed themselves and dparted, anticipating anothergreat event like this next year. . -K. VV. BASEBALL The baseball season was short and not very many games were scheduled. There was plenty of mate1'ial out for a winning team but were very much handicapped due to lack of practice. The line-up was as follows: Catcher, O. Jonesg pitcher, E. jonesg short stop, K. Davis, first base, Ross, second base, Coutsg third base, E. Davis, right field, Evansg center field, Priceg left field, Bevington. We came out with two defeats and one victory, which was accounted for by the desire for basketball training. -K. VV.
