We quickly elected officers: Nancy Williams, Debra Abrams, Terri Parker, and Wendy Thomas. Afterwards, we diligently set to work on our first float under the theme “Nest the Pirates which won honorable mention. We had two of our men on the varsity football team — Reggie Evans and Clayton Auman, plus numerous others on the J.V. team. Our women also made a debut in Miss York High. Nancy Williams was second runner up with Gw en Gillikin and Stacy Langston, also in the pageant. It seemed impossible that the school year had ended and we were sophomores. Our new slate of officers were Kelle Payne, Lisa Whitman, and Laura Quass. Our second float won honora- ble mention again in the Homecoming Parade. We were represented in more activities such as gymnastics, majorettes, and various sports and clubs. Varsity football boasted four of our men and Gwen Gillikin placed first runner up the Miss York High Pageant. Our biggest undertaking for the year was the Junior Ring Dance. We could scarcely believe that next year it would actually be we who would be receiving our rings. Suddenly it was the next year and we were upper-classmen. Headed by officers Cindy Gholson and Karen Drabik, we were charged with spirit and eager to offer the seniors some competition. Our float, the Presiden- tial Seal, received second place and was donated to the school to command attention and praise in the halls. Our varsity football team was quarterbacked by Junior Rusty Ingram along with juniors Marlon Foster, Steve Hervey, and Reggie Evans to form a team that again beat Tabb. For the first time we also had a showing in varsity basketball with Reggie Evans, Rusty Ingram, and George and Tom Stephenson all on the starting force. Varsity baseball was represented also by Rusty Ingram, George Stephenson and Jay Sexton as well as other juniors. We were proud of Gwen Gillikin for going to regionals in Gymnastics and Cathy Rowe for rep- resenting us in the Miss York High Pageant. Many of our numbers were present in the production of “Car- ousel which was a big hit. We also took on the task of selling concessions during football season, and spon- soring the senior prom. The highlight of our year, however, had to be our Ring Dance at the Bonhomme Rich- ard in Williamsburg. Now with our rings sparkling on our fingers, we felt a little taller and a little older, but still we had a lot of time ahead of us before we even thought of graduation. After a hasty summer of part-time jobs and lying on beaches, we returned to York as seniors, but with some changes. Our class, as well as other classes (against our protests), was split to form Bruton High School. Smaller in numbers, we joined other schools of like enrollment in AA, but it didn’t stop us from competing and winning. Reggie Evans was named York River District Offensive Player of the Year and there were many other senior men who worked together to form winning teams. Our senior class officers were a determined group of girls: Beckie Schultz, Vanessa Smith, Marjorie Washington, and Dana McPherson; and the whole S.C.A. was headed up by President Debra Abrams. Seniors Marjori e and Mabel Washington became co-editors of the Talon, Terri Parker was captain of the majorettes, Gwen Gillikin was captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders, and Chuck Spivey was captain of the track team. The traditional homecoming festivities ended with the Senior Float winning first place under the theme of “Reach Out and Touch and Barbara Babcock being crowned Homecoming Queen with Stacy Langston and Lisa Whitman as senior attendants. Vanessa Robinson was crowned Basketball Sweetheart later in the year. With the ordering of caps and gowns and announcements, the senior banquet, a trip to Florida, the prom, and graduation, our high school days came to a halt. You are cordially invited to: What? Graduation Time? 8:00 p.m. Place? York High Gymnasium What to bring? Memories from the past four years. We were together as one class for the last time. We were ready to move on to bigger and hopefully better things, secure in the knowledge that the Class of 1 977 had left its mark on York High School. 112 208 (plus) seniors entered school in September CLASS OFFICERS: Marjorie Washington, Treasurer; Dana McPherson, Secretary; Rebecca Schultz, President; Vanessa Smith, Vice President. There are a few people who stood with us through all of our “Why’s” and “I don’t care’s” who deserve the best of thanks. First, Mr. Milam and the rest of the administration and staff — mainly for their cooperation and patience. Second, Mr. Danny DeFalco, our representative and friend, whose inspiration and support helped to keep us sane; and Mr. Wilson Moore, our professional photographer. Third, we would like to thank Mrs. Margaret White, co-sponsor, and the rest of the Business Department for typing every page of this book. Last, and most important, we owe everything to Mrs. Lillian “Sissy Johnson. Without her loyal dedication, perseverance, patience, and good humor, this book would not have been possible. To next year’s staff, we wish you the ability to reach a deadline now and then — (something we never achieved) — and the good fortune of a reliable and loyal staff. Rhonda Rouse Lucy Alfriend Co-Editors Good morning yesterday You wake up and time has slipped away And suddenly it’s hard to find the memories you left behind remember, Do you remember the laughter and the tears the shadows of misty yesteryears? The good times and the bad you’ve seen and all the others in between remember Do you remember the times of your life? Reach back for the joy and the sorrow put them away in your mind, for memories are times that you borrow to spend when you get to tomorrow Here comes the setting sun The seasons are passing one by one So gather moments while you may Collect the dreams you dream today remember I Will you remember the times of your life?
