THE FALCON 1963 York CounI, Coorlhouse m Yorklown Volume Nine Published by the Senior Class YORK HIGH SCHOOL YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA Editor — Bonnie Carpenter Bus. The biggest and per- haps most important change was in enroll- ment which placed us in Group 1-A competi- tion in sports, forensics, and other similar ac- tivities. The second big change came in De- cember with the opening and dedication of a new gym with a seating capacity of 2500 (see left and below). Summer delivery for the Falcon was another first for York. Finally, this was the year of our school ' s evaluation by the State Department of Education. We, the Falcon staff, invite you now to review with us the places, people, and events that contribute toward making this a truly re- markable year at York — a year of the BIG STEP — the year 1962-63. Sam, we really should be working! 10 Mrs. Kate Davis School Librarian Dedication At a time when there is so much talk about the present and future progress at York, about enlargement of the faculty and student body, and about increased facilities for instnic- tion, it is only fitting that we should also look backward and see our beginnings. It is with this in mind that we, the Falcon staff of 1963, do dedicate this the ninth volume of our year- book to Mrs. Kate Davis in grateful apprecia- tion for all that she has done for us over the years since the opening of our school, not only in her work as librarian when she as- sisted us in our studies and our temi papers, but also through her guidance as sponsor of the Student Cooperative Association where she helped us plan our many activities. It CURRICULUM 12 The life of a high school student centers around the courses that he takes and York teachers spend much time help- ing students plan their curriculum. The Guidance Department which moved into new and larger quarters this year — away from the office and discipline — has the main responsibility, however, in aiding students ' choice of their courses and in smoothing out class conflicts. In this way students find their subjects more meaning- ful and enjoyable. Curriculum A student entering York High in the eighth grade makes tentative plans for his high school courses when he enrolls. He may change his schedule at the beginning of any year thereafter, but he plans what he hopes to do. in the eighth grade. York offers three courses to all students, in two of these courses certain electives are required for those preparing to go to college or the apprentice school. The academic course consisting of three years of math, three years of science, and two years of foreign language in addition to regular courses is required. For those Physical Education Electronics Class 14 stands pre-eminent interested in business, the commercial course is offered. In this course the students in their junior and senior years elect typing, shorthand, and office practice. The general course leaves the choice of electives up to the individual. Five years of English, three years of social studies, two vears each of math and science and three years of Physical Education are required courses for all students. Because York ' s curriculum is so varied, there is a wide range of electives including home economics, art. industrial arts, personal typing, German. Spanish. L atin. French, and the many phases of science and mathematics. Home Economii 15 Fifteen Seniors completed the 5-year accelerated program. I pass on to you the thought left witli me: If a man cheats you, quit dealing with him; if he is abusive, quit his company; if he slanders you, take care to live so that nobodv will believe hinj. There is nothing better than a cool. calm, quiet way of dealing witli the wrongs which confront us. Always be sure your actions outshine your intentions. With sincere laest wishes, r -i i JOHiN H. STEVENS, B.S., M.A. Principal. York High School May I help you? Mr. Stevens talks to the students. 21 New Additions Made in Office Secretaries and Assistants New also tliis year were the two general office secretaries, Mrs. Shirley Sykes and Mrs. Virginia Collie (below . Mrs. Doris Barnes ' right) liecanie full-time secretary t the principal. The efficiency and smoothness with which the office and guidance administrations operate are laigely due to the ex- cellent student help. Students in both departments act as receptionists, assisting in answering the many demands and requests of the student hodv. In addition, these assistants do filing, run errands, and keep up a line of communication between the offices and the classroom teachers. MR. LEWIS E. SIMPSON B.A. Vice-Principal and Athletic Director New this year is the office of vice-principal which is aptly filled by Mr. Lewis (Rusty) Simpson. He success- fully carries out his numerous duties, including dis- cipline, while maintaining the respect and loyalty of the student body. In addition, he is also the director of the school ' s athletic activities. MRS, DORIS BARNES 22 Mi . liirluy Sykes; and Mi; . The 1963 Honor Council (left) found new sponsors and changed their entire creed and program — really making the Honor Council a promin- ent part of life at York. The council worked diligently on a new constitution and for promoting honor throughout the school. Furthermore, the council pointed out the responsibility of the classroom teacher ' s cooperation with the Honor Council and emphasized the importance of understanding an indiyidual rather than disciplining him. no Beta Club 19 sopliomores were tapped this spring. The Thomas Nelson Chapter of the National Beta Club was founded, like all Beta Clubs, to stimulate effort, reward achievement, and to encourage and assist its members to continue their education after high school. To become a member, one must have a ninet) ' average and pass the qualities of leadership and a commendable attitude. In the fall, deserving Juniors and Seniors are tapped into the club, and in the spring, sophomores are tapped into the club. The Beta Club has sponsored many activities at York this year. With the addition of 24 members in the fall and 19 members in the spring, the club has broadened its activities. Not only did the Club s])onsor Homecoming and May Day activities, but they raised money for their scholarship fund by keeping a hat-and coat-check room during basketball season. Other important projects included the sale of pennants and bookcovers, cleaning out the press box, and ushering at basketball games, College Day, and Career Day. In March, the club attended the Capital District Convention in Roanoke. Grayson Williams. The first game pitted York against the mighty power of the Newport News Typhoons, who eventually won the district championship. The .37-6 score didn ' t reflect the enthusiasm or fighting spirit shown by the team. Our fighting Falcons marched on to a 13-0 victory over Smithfield, but were subdued the next week by the anxious drive of Hampton. York went on to hand our rival, Poquoson, a loss, only to lose the next week to James Blair. Heading down the home stretch, York had a 2-4 record and things were not looking very good. A win over Grou]) H Gloucester coupled with a loss to Warwick, brought us to a 3-5 record. A 5-5 record was the aim of Coach Williams at the be- ginning of the season, but it seemed im- : ' possible with two heavy contenders com- ing up. Our team responded beautifully with a 12-0 win over Ferguson. It was the first contest between these two peninsula schools. The last game of the season was against Deep Creek, one of the biggest offensive powers in the district. York ' s de- fense quickly changed the picture with a 15-6 victory. This was our greatest victory of the season; thus ending it with a 5-5 record, the best since 1958.
