A. of York High School is an organization that not only governs the students, but tries to bring about a better relationship among the students and teachers. Projects such as the Christmas and Thanksgiving drive give the students a feeling of unity as well I as responsibility. During the past year, the S.C. A. has sponsored several other projects such as dances and the Miss York High School contest to aid in purchasing worthwhile and useful gifts for the school. I have enjoyed being president of the S.C. A. this year and working with my fellow students. Our school has grown rapidly and we have not been able to adjust to the sud- den change. It is here that the S.C. A. must begin with its vital functions. This past year the student council has developed a program that will better school life and help 1 the students to find the true aspects of school life. I encourage and challenge the stu- dent government and the student body of future years to keep up with this idea of a bet- ter York High School. Donnie Shields S.C. A. President S.C. The Falcon Staff LYNNE ALLEN Editor GERRY COPLEY Assistant Editor Guided by our consciencious sponsor, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, the Falcon Staff has worked diligently this year to make this 1962 annual the best ever at York. This could only be possible through the co-operation of the en- tire student body. We began organizing in the summer and when September came, the staff as a unit worked to sell ads in order to finance the yearbook. With these ads we met our first deadline and were squared away to meet the succeeding four. The remaining time was spent mainly in scheduling pictures, drawing up pages and writing copy. The typists and proofreaders of course, played a major part in these operations. We met our last deadline with relief and settled down to wait for the proof. The Falcon staff sincerely hopes you will find many pleasant memories in your school life. We have im- mensely enjoyed making OUR contributions to York. Pictured Below; (Left to Right) STANDING: P. During football season, band members prepared a half-time performance for each weekend game. The annual combined show by the Newport News and York bands is one of the few in Virginia Later in the year the band journeyed to Winchester for the Apple Blossom Festival. The Falcons have marched in Yorktown and Williamsburg Christmas parades and the Armed Forces Parade. The annual spring concerts are another highlight of the year. The York High Falcon gridders 4-6 record did not reflect the spirit and hustle displayed. After dropping their opener to Group I Newport News, they came roaring back with a victory over Smithfield (6-0) and an upset over Group I Hampton (13-6). Then York found they could not rest on their laurels when they were defeated by rival Poquo- son (13-6) and a week later by Group I Oscar Smith. York ' s head, however, was bludgeoned but unbowed, and the Falcons proved it twice in succession by defeating James Blair on rain soaked Carey Field (13-0) and again a gainst Gloucester (7-0) the following week. However the win over Gloucester proved to be the Falcons last victory of the season. In each of the last three games, the Falcons scored only 7 points while the opposition - Northampton, Deep Creek, and Warwick scored 20,40, and 33 points respectively. This concluded the Falcons ' last season as a Group II school and they are looking for- ward to next year when they will be competing in Group I. FIRST ROW (Left to Right); Don Teague, Paul Scott. TJhe main attractions were discus thrower Bill Holt, the mile relay team and high jumper, John Rock. These six went to the State Meet and brought York second place in State-wide Competition, taking four first places. Holt, who had a 166 foot toss during the season, took first in the discus and shotput. High jumper John Rock tied for first. York’s crack mile relay team composed of Don Burke, John Hobbs, Jack Magee, Hal Wilbanks, took first in the mile relay, coming close to a state record. The mile-relay team also took first place in the Pilot Relays with a rec- ord breaking time. These track mentors and the many others who worked hard at York in 1961 will always be remembered for their great showing. With the shadow of Group I looming over the Falcons, the Athletic Department initiated a cross country team Under the direction of Coach Charles Hovis, the Falcon Harriers won great acclaim for York High at the Stapfe Country meet (Combination of Group IB, II, III). Next year, with the rising young talent, the cross-country (( should have a great year. leam Cross-Country Track Team Baseball Lettermen Paul Scott Bob Little Richard McConnell Cecil Gravely Eddie Boggs Rip Van Winkle Earl Smoot Wrestling Team Has Active Schedule This year the Falcon wrestling team suffered the pains of a young team entering into the seasoned competition of Group I.
