The geyser containment, a Y-shaped heraldic charge called a pail, is symbolic of support. The vertical bands and scalloped cloud forms are indicative of the upward surge of steam and water, an allusion to the famous geyser “Old Faithful.” The sea horse is symbolic of the basic mission of the destroyer-tender, the furnishing of supplies and services to the fleet. The trident is symbolic of naval power and authority. The head of the trident suggests the letter “E” Award, which the second USS Yellowstone (AD 27) earned 10 times.

achieved throughout the 93-94 Mediterranean deployment period include the award of the Southwest Asia Service Medal and the ship’s winning of the Safety pennant. During its overseas deployments, USS Yellowstone has been very active as a “good will ambassador”. Through the “Operation Handclasp” Program, crewmembers on the 93-94 deployment alone, devoted over 1,500 manhours to 13 highly successful community relations projects. The repair and maintenance projects benefitted orphanages, schools, retirement homes and rehabilitation centers. About 6,000 pounds of health, education and hygiene materials were also distributed to many of these organizations. Teamwork is the foundation for success aboard the USS Yellowstone and crewmembers proudly view their ship as the first and finest “battle” tender afloat, loyally striving to uphold the many fine traditions inherent in its proud namesake.
