THE HISTORY OF USS “Old Faithful’s” proud story USS Yellowstone (AD 41) is proud to be named after the first U.S. National Park. It was commissioned on June 28, 1980 in San Diego, Calif., and is the first of four ships of its class. USS Acadia (AD 42), USS Cape Cod (AD 43) and USS Shenandoah (AD 44) arc also named after national parks. Two previous ships have borne the name of Yellowstone. Like the current USS Yellowstone, all were built on the U. S. West Coast and served only in the Atlantic Fleet. The first USS Yellowstone was a freighter built in Oakland, Calif., and commissioned in September 1918. That ship carried general supplies between the U. S. and Europe during a relatively brief career which included the final year of World War I and two years thereafter. The second USS Yellowstone (AD 27) was a destroyer tender built in Tacoma, Wash., and commissioned in January 1946. While tending ships in East Coast ports and during 12 Mediterranean deployments, that ship earned a reputation for reliability and dependability. It lived up to the nickname “Old Faithful” during a very distinguished 23-year career. USS Yellowstone (AD 41), the “Old Faithful” of the 90’s, recently completed its seventh deployment since joining the U. S. Atlantic Fleet. Its crewmembers have continued to set standards of excellence, reliably carrying out the ship’s primary mission of providing quality support, maintenance and logistics for U. S. and allied maritime forces. In 1993, USS Yellowstone's Engineering Department refurbished much of its main propulsion space equipment during a three-month Dock Planned Maintenance Availability. Equipment such as boilers and evaporators was overhauled and the ship installed new firefighting systems throughout its main and auxiliary spaces.

YELLOWSTONE (AD-41) In Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, USS Yellowstone crewmembers successfully underwent an intensive two-week refresher training to certify their shipboard firefighting capability. Prior to USS Yellowstone's deployment in December, the ship also had to pass its Operational Plant Propulsion Examination. Work-intensive is the best description to sum up USS Yellowstone's recent Mediterranean deployment. Crewmembers dedicated more than 119,088 manhours, finishing over 3.400 repair jobs through 17 major alongside availabilities and 45 flyaway teams.
