Naples originally was named Neopolis, and was part of a large Greek colony which extended throughout southern Italy and Sicily. Naples was absorbed by the Roman Empire and the local area was a favorite vacation spot of the ruling class of Rome. Roman ruins abound throughout the area. Today Naples is one of Italy's major seaports and industrial cities. It is very popular with tourists from all over the world, as it is located near Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, and the Isle of Capri.

It is also the second most populated city in France and its most important seaport.
