Ship’s History The first YELLOWSTONE (originally named War Boy) was a steel hulled, single screw freighter, commissioned in September, 1918. During a brief career near the end and shortly after World War I, YELLOWSTONE was decommissioned and returned to the Shipping Board for use. Her subsequent tour was short lived due to running agroundin the Azores. Although listed as stranded and a total loss, all 45 of her crew was safe. The second YELLOWSTONE (AD-27) was commissioned in January, 1946. For 28 years she tended the destroyers of the Atlantic Fleet. During this period she earned a reputation of dependability and reliability, the nickname Old Faithful and the coveted battle efficiency E award ten times. She was decommissioned on September 11, 1974. The present YELLOWSTONE (AD-41), commissioned on June 28, 1980, is the first tender to be equipped with a destroyer refueling rig capable of sending refueling probe, robb and NATO refueling couplings to other ships. YELLOWSTONE has participated in several multi-national naval exercises, providing mobile repair and logistics support. During the NATO exercise Ocean Venture 81 , the Repair Department, under simulated wartime conditions, completed over 100 jobs during a three day anchorage in Scapaflow, Scotland. During United Effort Teamwork 84 , YELLOWSTONE completed over 300jobs, sending Tiger Teams of repair personnel to other ships and providing logistic support by transferring repair parts and supplies and pumping fuel and water to ships of the task force. Shield TheUSS YELLOWSTONE, a new destroyer tender. Inherits the name and traditions ot two former ships. They earned the sobriquet Old Faithful for their long and dedicated service to the fleet. The geyser containment, a Y-shaped heraldic charge called a poll. Is symbolic of support. The color red Is for heat and energy. The vertical bands and the scalloped white and blue cloud forms are indicative of the upward surge of steam and water. In allusion to the famous geyser Old Faithful. Crest The sea horse is symbolic of the basic mission of the destroyer tender, the furnishing ot supplies and services to the fleet. The trident is symbolic of naval power and authority. The head of the trident suggest the tetter E . the coveted battle efficiency E . which the second YELLOWSTONE earned ten times.
