Captain Jerry Allen Lewis is a native of New Hampshire, and a 1962 graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics. Entering the Navy, he was commissioned in March 1963 at Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island. After commissioning, he attended Damage Control School in San Francisco, then served as Damage Control Assistant, Main propulsion Assistant and Engineer Officer in USS PICKING (DD-685). Upon graduation from Naval Destroyer School in March 1966, he was Engineer Officer in USS PRICHERR (DD-561) for two years. His next assignment was as Boiler Officer in USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62). In October 1969, he was assigned as an instructor at U.S. Naval Destroyer School, Newport, Rhode Island, teaching Engineering in the department head and PCO-PXO courses. Assigned to duty in Vietnam in 1971, he was a Naval Advisor at Fleet Command in Saignon and served with the Vietnamese Blue Water Fleet. After his tour in-country, he was assigned Executive Officer on USS HEPBURN (FF-1055). following his Executive Officer tour, he attended the Armed Forces Staff College January through June 1975, and then was assigned as Chief Staff Officer for COMDESRON 22. From 1977 through 1979, he served on the staff of CONMA VSURFLANT in the Readiness Assessment Section. In 1980, he attended the Senior Officer Ship Material Readiness Course at Idaho Falls, Idaho, and then was Commanding Officer of USS TRUETT (FF-1095) from August 1980 through 1982. The next three years were spent as Engineer in USS CORAL SEA (CV-43). This tour entailed a homeport shift from Alameda to Norfolk, an around the world cruise, and a major overhaul in Norfolk Naval Shipyard for sixteen months. In May 1985, he reported to the CTNCLANTFLT Propulsion Examining Board where he served as Deputy Senior Member for the Board. Departing PEB in October 1986, he relieved Captain Turner as the Commanding Officer of the USS YELLOWSTONE. Captain Lewis’ decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal with GoldStar, Combat V, Navy Achievement Medal with Gold Star, Combat Action Ribbons the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and several unit awards. Captain Lewis is married to the former Navy Nurse Kathleen Ann Glover of Vineland, New Jersey. They have three children; Kerpat rick, Kimberly, and Kara. The family resides in Norfolk, Virginia. 7
