Inherits the name and traditions ot two former ships. They earned the sobriquet Old Faithful for their long and dedicated service to the fleet. The geyser containment, a Y-shaped heraldic charge called a poll. Is symbolic of support. The color red Is for heat and energy. The vertical bands and the scalloped white and blue cloud forms are indicative of the upward surge of steam and water. In allusion to the famous geyser Old Faithful. Crest The sea horse is symbolic of the basic mission of the destroyer tender, the furnishing ot supplies and services to the fleet. The trident is symbolic of naval power and authority. The head of the trident suggest the tetter E . the coveted battle efficiency E . which the second YELLOWSTONE earned ten times. Ship’s History The first YELLOWSTONE (originally named War Boy) was a steel hulled, single screw freighter, commissioned in September, 1918. During a brief career near the end and shortly after World War I, YELLOWSTONE was decommissioned and returned to the Shipping Board for use. Her subsequent tour was short lived due to running agroundin the Azores. Although listed as stranded and a total loss, all 45 of her crew was safe. The second YELLOWSTONE (AD-27) was commissioned in January, 1946. For 28 years she tended the destroyers of the Atlantic Fleet. During this period she earned a reputation of dependability and reliability, the nickname Old Faithful and the coveted battle efficiency E award ten times. She was decommissioned on September 11, 1974. The present YELLOWSTONE (AD-41), commissioned on June 28, 1980, is the first tender to be equipped with a destroyer refueling rig capable of sending refueling probe, robb and NATO refueling couplings to other ships. YELLOWSTONE has participated in several multi-national naval exercises, providing mobile repair and logistics support. During the NATO exercise Ocean Venture 81 , the Repair Department, under simulated wartime conditions, completed over 100 jobs during a three day anchorage in Scapaflow, Scotland. During United Effort Teamwork 84 , YELLOWSTONE completed over 300jobs, sending Tiger Teams of repair personnel to other ships and providing logistic support by transferring repair parts and supplies and pumping fuel and water to ships of the task force. Second YELLOWSTONE (AD-27) 4 jfe Yellowstone National Park Captain Jerry A. Lewis Commanding Officer 6 Captain Jerry Allen Lewis is a native of New Hampshire, and a 1962 graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics. Entering the Navy, he was commissioned in March 1963 at Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island. After commissioning, he attended Damage Control School in San Francisco, then served as Damage Control Assistant, Main propulsion Assistant and Engineer Officer in USS PICKING (DD-685). Upon graduation from Naval Destroyer School in March 1966, he was Engineer Officer in USS PRICHERR (DD-561) for two years. His next assignment was as Boiler Officer in USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62). In October 1969, he was assigned as an instructor at U.S. Naval Destroyer School, Newport, Rhode Island, teaching Engineering in the department head and PCO-PXO courses. Assigned to duty in Vietnam in 1971, he was a Naval Advisor at Fleet Command in Saignon and served with the Vietnamese Blue Water Fleet. After his tour in-country, he was assigned Executive Officer on USS HEPBURN (FF-1055). following his Executive Officer tour, he attended the Armed Forces Staff College January through June 1975, and then was assigned as Chief Staff Officer for COMDESRON 22. From 1977 through 1979, he served on the staff of CONMA VSURFLANT in the Readiness Assessment Section. In 1980, he attended the Senior Officer Ship Material Readiness Course at Idaho Falls, Idaho, and then was Commanding Officer of USS TRUETT (FF-1095) from August 1980 through 1982. The next three years were spent as Engineer in USS CORAL SEA (CV-43). This tour entailed a homeport shift from Alameda to Norfolk, an around the world cruise, and a major overhaul in Norfolk Naval Shipyard for sixteen months. In May 1985, he reported to the CTNCLANTFLT Propulsion Examining Board where he served as Deputy Senior Member for the Board. Departing PEB in October 1986, he relieved Captain Turner as the Commanding Officer of the USS YELLOWSTONE. Captain Lewis’ decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal with GoldStar, Combat V, Navy Achievement Medal with Gold Star, Combat Action Ribbons the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and several unit awards. Captain Lewis is married to the former Navy Nurse Kathleen Ann Glover of Vineland, New Jersey. They have three children; Kerpat rick, Kimberly, and Kara. The family resides in Norfolk, Virginia. 7 Executive Officer CDR James G. Waiifred Commander James G. Waiifred is from Minneapolis. Minnesota. With a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. CDR Waiifred graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy as a commissioned Ensign. He attend ed the Communication Officers School and served subsequently as Communications Officer on board USS KEPPLER (DD765). After attending the Naval Destroyer School, he was assigned the duties of Chief Engineer on USS JOHN R. CRAIG (DD-885), then as Chief Engineer on board USS FREDRICK (LST-1184). For three years, CDR Waiifred taught students at the U.S. Naval Academy prior to his duties as the Main Propulsion Assistant on board USS LEXINGTON (A VT-16). Following two years on LEXINGTON. CDR Waiifred served as an instructor at the Surface Warfare Officer School Command in Newport. Rhode Island. After a tour in Norfolk, Virginia, as a member of the Readiness Support Group Steam Mobility Training Team, CDR Willfred served as Assistant Chief Engineer Officer on USS NASSAU (LHA-4) until June, 1985. On September 29, 1985, the YELLOWSTONE crew welcomed CDR Waiifred on board as their new Executive Officer. CDR Waiifred's personal awards include the Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal ■ 3 stars, Vietnam Service Medal and Combat Action Ribbon. Commander Waiifred and his wife, the former Arlene Chambers, have two children, Matthew Bennett and Kimberly Sue. Executive Officer CDR R.L. Adams CDR Adams enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1964 and was sent to preschool instruction at NAS Beeville, Texas. In June 1965, he began as a student in NATTC Memphis Avionics A school and was in the first class of Antisub marine Warfare Specialists to graduate. Served in helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron units 10,4 and 6 in Reem Field Beach, California. Returned to NA TTC Memphis in 1967 for A vionics B School and was selected to participate in the Na vy Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP). A ftended A uburn Uni versify graduated and was commissioned in December, 1971. Served as Gunnery Officer and First Lieutenant on USS MARIAS (AO-57) followed by a tour as ASW Officer on USS TA TTNALL (DDG-17) and USS HARRY E. YARNELL (CG-19). From those three tours he was assigned as Missile Officer on USS NIMITZ (CVN-68). Additional schooling as the Destroyer Department Head Course in Newport, Rhode Island. From the formal training he was assigned as Engineer Officer on USS GLOVER (FF-1098) followed by First Lieutenant of USS SACRAMENTO (AOE-1). His first shore assignment, outside a school environment, came in October, 1982 when he was assigned to the personnel Exchange Pro gram in the United Kingdom where he taught Surface Warfare Tactis at HMS Dryad in Portsmouth, England. After nearly three years in England he returned to the USN in the form of Assistant Operations Officer on USS INCHON (LPH-12). From the Assistant OPS job he was assigned to his eighth different type of ship as Executive Officer - USS YELLOWSTONE. 9 CDR LB. Burnett Jr. Chaplain Commander Ivan B. Burnett, Jr. is a native of Meridian, Miss. His degrees include a B.A. in Psychology from Millsaps College at Jackson, Miss., A Master of Divinity from Yale University, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from the School of Theology at Claremont; Claremont, Calif. Upon entering the Navy in 1973, Chaplain Burnett completed the Basic Course for Chaplains in Newport, Rhode Island. Subsequent tours of duty include Battalion Chaplain to the Marines at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Senior Chaplain at NAVCAMS WESTPAC, Guam, Naval hospital; Key West, Fla., USS MISSISSIPPI (CGN40) Pastoral Residency in Portsmouth, Va., and COMNAVBASE. Norfolk, Va. as CREDO Asst. Director and later as Acting Director. He reported onboard YELLOWSTONE on May 15. 1985. While on board YELLOWSTONE, Chaplain Burnett was responsible for organizing the broadest range of Command Religious Program which included; special CREDO retreats, supported the worship of all major religious groups organized a clowne troupe that entertained several different groups of people while overseas. He also worked with the 6th Fleet Chaplain to provide; an audience with the Pope as well as Midnight Mass at St. Peter's Basilica. Chaplain Burnett also arranged special tours for Jerusalem as well as giving lectures on Isreal while still providing ministry for ship's along side of the YELLOWSTONE and teaching classes from Anger Management and Stress Control to Responsible Sexuality and Marriage Enrichment. Chaplain Burnett is married to the former Joanne Evelyn Munsil and they have two sons, Daniel Clark and Davis Shaw. 10 TMCM R.D. Stacey Command Master Chief Master Chief Torpedoman's Mate Raymond D. Stacey hails from Long Island, New York. Master Chief Stacey entered the Navy in January, 1961. Over the past two and a half decades he has had a wide variety of duty assignments and received extensive technical training. Prior to his arrival on board YELLOWSTONE in October, 1986, he had served on five other Navy ships: USS SIMON LAKE (AS33), USS SPERRY (SS344) USS HUNLEY (AS31), USS COBBLER (SS-344) and USS CA VALLA (SS244). A graduate of the Navy's Senior Enlisted Academy, Master Chief Stacey also had three tours of instructor duty at Service Schools Command, Orlando, Florida and was the detailer in Washington, D.C. for Torpedoman's Mates and Sonar Minemen. Master Chief Stacey's personal awards include the Navy Achievement Medal ■ two awards.
